I enjoyed that the dry wines weren't so mouth drying. The sweet wines were very fruit forward, which helped minimize any potential for extreme sweetness. I particularly enjoyed the Bear (dry-red) and the Lemon Essence (fruit). I particularly want to commend on the lemon wine as I typically hate anything lemon flavor because it tastes artificial. I'm glad my partner (who loves everything lemon dessert flavored) decided to try this flavour because I fell in love. Tonight there was a cover band playing. They were good, just wish it hadn't been so loud as it made it a little difficult to have a conversation. Overall, I would definitely return to this winery!

Engine house 25 wines continue to excel in great tasting wines amid the pandemic. Although the…read morephysical tasting gathering are on hold they are now doing them virtually. Engine house 25 is an old fire station that is also home to the Clemente museum. Wines can be ordered online for either store pickup or shipped to your home. I needed a basic Riesling wine for an event. I placed my order online and parked in their lot nearby to pick it up. You need to ring the buzzer at the entrance of the Clemente museum in during operating hours in order to pick it up. The man who greeted me found my order and while waiting for it got a fast glimpse of this wonderful museum dedicated to a Pittsburgh Pirate legend. All the wines are corked and labeled with their trademark or depending upon brand with the number or image of Roberto Clemente. I took my wine home, refrigerated it and once I uncorked it was able to sample some of its sweet goodness. The wine had a fruity taste to it and was indeed worth savoring. I'm grateful for the opportunity to purchase quality wine with good service and dedication to both an historic landmark and a notable Pirate player. Located on the cusp of Lawrenceville on Penn Ave, they have their own parking lot.

I love Wine and I love Hog's Head so I knew we had to go. I remember reading an article in the paper prior regarding the opening of Hog Dog so I was excited to give them a try! The delightful owner was at a booth with some of his signature flavors: tomato, cherry, pomegranate and more. Everything was amazing! So unique and worth the visit. He makes the more traditional flavors as well, but I think he has something going with a lot of these off-the-wall flavors. Best thing about the business is him. You can tell he is a genuine Pittsburgh guy so has a true love for the craft of wine making. This is a hobby turned into a business and you can see that just by speaking with him. His creativity totally shows! I've yet to visit the actual winery due to limited hours, but I'm excited to pick up a few bottles!

The room was empty besides 5 or so senior ladies who had no wine anywhere to be seen, so we weren't sure what was going on. We walked back to the pizza counter and the man we walked by when we first came in was nowhere to be seen, but another man had just walked in. He asked if we had been helped and we said no, we were trying to go to the winery. He told us to just head over there and he'd be right there. We go back into the winery and he comes behind the counter and kinda just stares at us and then we ask if they do tastings and he said "yes" and just stares again. We had thought he would elaborate, but he did not, so we asked how the tastings work, how many do you get to taste, etc. He says "I don't know, like 3 or 4." He does not offer up any suggestions or tasting notes, no background on the winery, etc. We each picked 3 wines to try and then asked to buy a bottle. All of the wines were actually really good and we settled on the Catawba to sip while we read next to each other. After about 10 minutes, the senior ladies all leave and the man who helped us went to go sit in the dining area of the pizza side to watch tv. It was just a weird atmosphere and no one was very friendly. The longer we were there, the more staff we kept hearing and seeing on the pizza side, but there was never any customers coming in until around the time we finally left. Since I did enjoy the wines, I would be inclined to pick up some bottles if I ever came across them. However, I wouldn't come back into the winery for them.

There is street parking right in front of the building with a steep set of stairs to enter. I was told there is also a ramp on the other side of the building to make it accessible. When you first walk in, it isn't 100% clear which way to go (although any of the ways ultimately lead you into the main church room). I had never been, so I asked the person behind the bar about the history of the winery and the space. It turns out he is the owner so he had a lot of information to give. I learned about the founding of the winery, the old space up the road, the renovations to the church space and their wine production (like where they get their grapes). I ended up sampling four different wines before I settled on the glass that I chose. There are a variety of seating options, including some with a more lounge feel (couches on what used to be the altar). I visited on a Thursday night and it was fairly quiet. They were offering a chicken parmesan meal that sounded (and looked) delicious, but I had already eaten. During Lent, they have seafood specials on Friday nights. In addition to wine, they also had beer, cider and mixed drinks as options. This would be a great place for a date night or a girls night out. I'll definitely be back!

I easily grabbed a seat at the bar and the folks working were so nice and friendly! I was there solo and they didn't treat me any differently than larger groups, which I so appreciated. When we entered the winery, we were greeted by Michael Kavic (owner). He asked if this was our first visit, and when we told him it was, we were invited to sit down for a wine tasting. The wine tasting was amazing! He first gave us a flight of white wine (6) and told us about each one. In addition to the wine, he provided us with cheese and crackers. The whites were tastefully crafted and absolutely devine. After we finished with the whites, he brought us the red flight. We were able to try 4 of the 6 red varieties because they were out of the other 2. Michael Stephen was so friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. After trying the wines, his wife gave us forms in case we wanted to order anything. We ordered a bottle of white and a bottle of blush wine to take home with us. Michael's wife, Patricia, gave us some great Pennsylvania wine resources upon checkout. Lovely experience at Kavic Winery. We can't wait to return!

We arrived and Christian the owners son had introduced himself. He had explained about the restrictions around COVID that they are only doing samples and bottle purchased. He said this was his parents guidelines. That's fine that they do not want to take a risk, but every one else is doing so. Anyhow he said they've been opened for 11 years. He said it's still a hobby for his dad who is a MD Surgeon. Okay the wine; 5 samples and they had a bunch that were sold out. They make all of the wine in stainless. They do add sticks of different wood flavors for some red wines. All of the wine grapes from Lake Erie. All of the wines that I tasted were good. The dry wines, I tasted sugar in them as if he adds extra sugar to the wines. Christian went through all of the wines, tastes, how to taste and why really well. We will return, this guy can do some comedy as well. :)

I chose to sit at the bar since I was there on my own. My server was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. She shared information about the winery and some of the most popular wine and food items. After sampling several, I settled on a glass of the playhouse red blend and one of their specials - a grilled cheese and tomato bisque. The soup was creamy and delicious and the grilled cheese comfort food perfection. Food came out fairly quickly and my server was attentive to my needs without being pushy. I really enjoyed my experience here and will definitely be back, hopefully for one of their events or maybe a visit in their fun looking igloos.
