We bought cherry and blueberry cake doughnuts that were "okay" at best. The filled long-johns were dry and had minimal filling--unimpressive. The banana chocolate chip muffin was so obviously the fake flavoring so again--unimpressive. We also bought banana cream and blueberry pies but haven't tried them yet! We're not overly optimistic considering the other items... Unfortunately they're on the lesser side of average and I don't recommend them. read more

Customer service was awful. The bakery items were good. Definitely won't be going back.

Love this place! Referred here by a few family members so I called in a cake for our son's first birthday and it ended up being exactly what we wanted and more. They matched our party theme perfectly and the smash cake they included for free was a huge hit. My son had it all over him and you can't not smile if a one year old has cake all over his face. Took a little while to actually get it ordered but after I called several times we got it sorted out. A good value and would highly recommend! Definitely getting future cakes here! read more

Needed to take something to my mechanic. He fixed something for free. Decided to pick up a few pies from "By the Dozen". They were reasonably priced, had napkins, forks. Tried them at the mechanic shop. Tasted amazing. We arrived late, right when they closed. They were kind and served us anyway. The friend ordered a dozen doughnuts. They were gone quickly at her house. Will return. Need to explore further caked goods. read more

I used to say that By The Dozen had the best cinnamon rolls ever and would stop in whenever I was in the area. One day i stopped in and noticed that there was glaze on the rolls rather than the usual frosting. My guess was that they ran out of frosting. I bought one and it was nowhere near as good. I stopped in a couple of times after but they were still glazed rather than frosted. The last time I stopped in I took one look at the 'glazed' cinnamon rolls and turned around and walked out. I think they are trying to cut cost by eliminating the frosting. I can't believe I am the only person who stopped buying their cinnamon rolls because of this. Cost cutting measures like this are usually a sign if a company in trouble. I really hope they bring back the original recipe of cinnamon rolls. read more

This place makes the most melt in your mouth orange cranberry scones! All their tasty treats are fresh and delicious!

Horrible experience with this Bakery! We ordered a two tiered wedding cake. We picked up the cake as we were only 15 minutes from the church reception. Going painstakingly slow, by the time we reach the reception bathe cake had cracked in half and was falling! The cake had not been refrigerated properly/long enough. It actually should have been partially frozen in order to be properly delivered. I called them the next day and left a voicemail. No call back. Two days later I called again and spoke with the manager. She admitted it had not been refrigerated. She said she would talk to the owner and call with a resolution. NO PHONE Call again! No ownership whatsoever. If you want your special day to remain so, DO NOT TRUST them ! So incredibly disappointed in every way. Zero stars! read more

Got a cake & a appe crumble pie for Thanksgiving. $24 for the pie & bottom was mushy, uncooked dough. The cake was $26 and was very dry, although buttercream frosting was still very good. I thought the pie was was way overpriced. read more

I'm not one to usually complain, especially about a locally owned business, but my encounter with By the Dozen Bakery was particularly gross to me. We decided to throw my son a graduation party on 6/10. I called By the Dozen Bakery to order a full sized sheet cake on 6/06. They have one picture example of their $99.99 sheet cake on their website which is a exactly what I needed. Well, the only difference is that I wanted the roses in my son's high school colors.l instead of pink and purple. I was told that it was a VERY busy weekend (over 200 cakes going out that day). They said they could do the cake, but the decorating would be $55 extra, or $154.99 total?!?! I kindly reminded them that I wanted to more or less order the exact example cake that they had on their very own website that was listed for $99. I asked to speak to a manager to understand the ridiculously overpriced unexplained up-charge. It was made clear to me that the manager did not want to listen to any reason either. They were very busy which made my patronage to them for that day unwanted. Instead of telling me that they were booked for the day, which would have been understandable, they decided to attempt to price gouge me instead for nearly $60 extra dollars. It didn't matter what the price said on their website at that point. I will NEVER darken the doorway of this business ever again. If my business is meaningless on a busy weekend, it feels meaningless on any weekend ever going forward. Shout out to Schnuck's that got me the same cake I needed out the door for $60. The next time I need a cake, I will research a local bakery that will value my business instead of one that is so easily willing to take advantage of a busy graduation weekend. ***Pic is a screenshot of the cake I wanted directly off their website that reflects their supposed $99.99 price. read more

Amazing pastries and service! Their Danishes are incredible! If you want pastries that aren't sickly sweet, but have a real depth of flavor, this is the place for you. I ordered smiley face cookies expecting what they advertise on their website. The cookies are completely different and look nothing like the ones on their page. When I asked about them they said they so longer make those. Why would you advertise something you do not make? They did offer my money back but I had already promised to bring cookies as a snack tonight. Don't expect to get what they advertise. read more

I have wasted 3 weeks trying to order a cake for my husbands birthday. It took two weeks to get an email that I could get the cake I wanted and to call in and order it. So I call, 3 times, voicemail every time. I leave a msg, then they leave a msg that I can't get what I want. So now It's too late to get even get the cake ordered somewhere else. I was willing to drive over an hour because this where I had gotten my wedding cake and loved it. What a waste of time, very disappointed. read more

Lady is quite rude unfortunately. Argumentative. So we have never bought or tried the food since then.

My family has been using this bakery for over 15 years! Their quality is unmatched! Delicious, adorable and affordable products! In the last month I have used them twice and both times they went above my expectations and gave me excellent and courteous service! To be honest, there must have been a shift in the employees and prices because I see a huge difference than even just with using them last year! One week before my husband's birthday, the person who was going to make his special birthday cake advised me she wouldn't be able to do it. In a panic I came to Yelp and looked up local bakeries... By the Dozen Bakery was rated highly by several individuals so I thought I'd give them a shot. I called and was greeted warmly. I explained I needed a custom made cake.... in less than a week... "No Problem!" was the answer from the other end! I was so relieved! She asked me what I wanted and I started to explain.... the cake I wanted was very complex so she helpfully suggested I email her a picture of what I wanted, which I did immediately. Within 30 minutes, I had a return phone call indicating that yes they could do it and what the price would be. I jumped on it. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up the cake but I was BLOWN AWAY! It looked EXACTLY like the picture I had sent! The girl working behind the counter knew exactly who I was once I told her my name and promptly brought the cake out for us, commenting that "They needed to get the cake off the counter, it was creeping her out"!! :D It was made with red velvet cake and raspberry filling..... the cake was the Necronomicon, AKA The Book of the Dead. It was delicious!! We renamed it the Necro-nom-nom-nom-icon! I'm not sure what I'm going to do next year for my husbands birthday, but I know for certain I will be using By the Dozen Bakery again! read more

Bought an assortment of donuts, long johns and Danish along with a cup of coffee. They had a really nice assortment of decorated cookies, cupcakes, pan and layer cakes. The cake decorator is very talented as the creations were top notch. This was my second visit here, the first one was Sunday. I arrived shortly after 6 AM, so I was amongst the first 10 or so customers. After two visits I must differ from the other reviewers, but only in 1 area. I am unable to critique the taste of any of the pan and layer cakes, cupcakes or cookies as I am not a fan of them. The area I differ with the others is for the donuts, long johns, danish and filled pastries. The items chosen were boxed and supplemented by a cup of coffee. I sat down at one table and opened the box to sample one item and, lo and behold, it was a day old glazed donut! Not stale mind you, but cold and definitely not fresh. Same day old recipe for the cream cheese filled danish! And the same for the long john! Now on the first visit, I encountered only 1 day old item, the glazed donut. (Repeat offender) Another thing I noticed was they offered no loaves of bread or bagels of varying kinds on display whatsoever. What's up with that? The coffee wasn't that great either. So, I have to assume that the other reviewers know what they are talking about with regard to the decorated cookies, cupcakes, pan and layer cakes. However, the items I chose are not in the same class, nay even the same arena. The two Swiss Maid bakeries, in Harvard and Woodstock, are far better, except for the cakes, cookies and cupcakes. So, that is the basis for my rating: day old stuff, and Swiss Maid Bakeries. If the decorated items were not so first rate in appearance, the rating would be 2 stars. read more

The customer service here is awesome and their bakery tastes fantastic - definitely a dieter's nightmare however they definitely came though for us when our initial baker closed down their business unexpectedly and without notice. Their prices were slightly outside of budget however, worth EVERY penny. The establishment was clean, workers were friendly and sweettooths were satisfied. We plan to order more treats for upcoming events in the near future. Thank you for saving our graduate from a meltdown. She was so excited for this college reveal cake. My heart would have broken if we wouldn't have been able to provide her with such a basic request. Thank you from our happy tummies to yours! :-) read more

The donuts are out of this world, 6-star worthy. Nice, crunchy outside encasing a warm, perfectly cakey inside. Yum! I also ordered a cake. It was decorated very nicely for the price. It tasted mediocre. It was nothing to write home about, but it was not bad either. The buttercream frosting was bland and the raspberry filling was only spread until about an inch from the edge (very odd). I probably won't be ordering a cake from here again, but I'll definitely return for the donuts. read more

Terrible customer service. The woman that helped me was very rude. There was one person ahead of me on the opposite side of the counter so I looked to see what donuts they had. The woman then with a condescending tone said "can you please follow the arrows on the floor". The tape was almost the same color as the floor so I didn't notice it. When it was my turn to pick things out the condescending tone came back and was asked what I wanted and if I wanted donuts or rolls. I said a bit of both. So I ordered what I though was a roll first then went ahead and picked out what I thought was donuts. When I picked out a filled donut I got more of the condescending tone, "so you want more rolls" and it continued with "what else" until I was done. Sorry to ruin your day lady. It's just donuts read more

I have visited the same area four times with my daughters travel ball team. A creme filled long John caught my eye at the Road Ranger convenience store and I had to try it. I fell in love with this doughnut! It was the best I've ever had and I consider myself a long John expert! Unfortunately (fortunately for my waistline) they have been sold out on my last trip which means it is popular. I looked up the bakery, thinking I would hunt one down before leaving the area for good but it's closed. Pretty desperate, I get it, but it was a major splurge. Try it! read more

This donut place hands down is the best in Rockford! Fresh delicious and very friendly staff.

My sister and I saw a commercial for this bakery and their advertisement for donuts. My sister LOVES donuts so naturally we had to try them. We went today and we were not disappointed. We purchased a variety. For dessert I had a Chocolate Long John with cream filling. It was loaded with cream. Every bite had cream. I was surprised and elated that there was that much cream. My sister had a Raspberry filled bismark and hers was loaded as well. Can't wait to try the rest of our selections. Run don't walk to get your donuts here! read more

My family has been a customer for a very long time. I have a wife two children, five sisters and 5 nieces. My family is very big when it comes to birthdays Every year on every birthday 2 in December, 2 in January 2in March 2 in April 2 in June 2 in July 1 in August 1 in November we each get a cake and the family gets together for cake and ice cream. We all love birthday cake very much. There has not been a birthday in this family when we have not had a birthday cake. We buy all our cakes from BY THE DOZEN. The flavor of the frosting was at one time unmatched. A friend of mine got married some years ago and at the wedding reception I was eating some of their wedding cake and as soon as I took one bite I KNEW that it was a By The Dozen cake. I am a cake connoisseur I've lived 53 plus years and have never had a birthday when I didn't get a cake. But now Im in search of a new bakery because something has changed with their cake frosting. Their buttercream frosting was the best in town, I does not taste like it used to. I guess as usual when the children take over a family business it loses the quality some times. They need to get in the kitchen and get the buttercream flavor back because all I taste now is just a sugary frosting with not much flavor. PLEASE BRING BACK THE FLAVOR BACK. read more

I didn't have a lot of dealing with By The Dozen, but I did get to enjoy their work. My wife ordered a specially designed birthday cake from them for my birthday. I'd definitely look into getting another cake from them. read more
