I recently had a meal here at the student union at Butler University and the service was terrible. I'm not one to complain or be a so called "Karen", but the service was terrible and I can't emphasize that enough. First off, the lady who was running the ice cream/dessert area kept giving people nasty looks and wasn't the nicest. She took away the machine early which didn't allow other people to enjoy ice cream, which probably is one of the best things here since their food isn't all that. Overall the experience at the student union was very unpleasant and I hope to see it improve in the near future as I will be back to see if it has. Thank you for taking time to read this. read more

Butler University hosted an exhilarating experience yesterday evening for the eclipse. At first, I was skeptical about attending and indulging in the festivities; however, the music and overall atmosphere of the event, posted around campus, were exciting. Despite my initial hesitations, I'm glad I decided to attend. Butler University's vast campus space provided great optical scenery from all points of the eclipse. read more

Hinkle Fieldhouse, sometimes referred to as "Indiana's Basketball Cathedral " is steeped in rich history. Originally named Butler Fieldhouse when it was completed in 1928. It was the largest basketball arena in the United States until 1950. It was renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1966 in honor of Paul "Tony" Hinkle, nicknamed the Coach of all seasons, who was Butler's long time Athletic Director, Football coach, Baseball coach and Basketball coach. It is the sixth oldest college basketball arena still in use and is the oldest and among the largest basketball arenas in the NCAA Division 1 basketball. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It was the site of the annual Indiana Boys HS Basketball State championship from 1928-1971. There were many championship games played there including the 1954 title game when tiny Milan HS defeated larger Muncie Central HS. Milan's team served as the inspiration for the movie Hoosiers and the final scenes of the film's championship game was filmed at Hinkle. Another notable event occurred in 1955 and 1956 when Indianapolis Crispus Attucks HS won back to back State championships, a first for an all black HS team. read more

Lovely university with a growing student population. I graduated from here in '12 and it has been interesting seeing the many changes on campus. I don't recognize too much when I drive down Sunset. I think it's lost the more personal feel it once had, but I'm happy that I still know some professors who continue to work here. While the university grows outward, I feel the professors really do a far better job of connecting with the students and being meaningful in their lives long after graduation and the university have outgrown them. read more

Shout out to my alma mater! People: Some is the friendliest around. You won't go anywhere without a door being held for you or a smile from a stranger. The students are open and accepting, and the professors truly care about each student's well-being in and out of the classroom. Classes: They're small (15-50 people) and therefore allow for a lot of discussion and personal growth. Classes this small don't allow for students to not get involved. A lot of my classes even took attendance (which I thought was crazy at first because we're adults) but also ended up keeping everyone accountable for staying involved. Coolest class you can take: dog-walking (gym class that partners with the Humane Society). Involvement: Because the school is so small, it's possible to be involved in tons of clubs and activities. Anything from student government to rowing, sign language to international student programming. Over half the students study abroad which is a crazy-high statistic. Cool that so many students are interested in the rest of the world. Sports: Everyone already knows that Butler is famous for their basketball - being underdogs and winning in the last minute of a game; complete with nice coaches and classy players. I personally always loved laying on the grassy bowl hill and watching soccer games under the stadium lights. Baseball games are also fun, and the dance team rocks. The only thing left to say is... go dawgs. read more

While I've never attended classes at Butler, our family frequently attends lectures and performances at Clowes Hall and other venues around the campus. The most recent lecture here we attended was Pulitzer Prize winner Colson Whitehead, and he was wonderful! This particular lecture was held inside the Schrott Center for the Arts, which is smaller and more intimate than Clowes Hall. Lucky enough to find seats in the second row, we enjoyed our evening listening to Colson. The seats were comfortable and the sound and lighting was great. read more

First time I've ever been to Butler; more specifically Clowes Hall. Stunning place to see a show. I was able to catch Black Violin while they were in town and I truly enjoyed myself. I'll be sure to visit again for other events being held on campus. read more

I can't vouch for the school itself as I was never a student but I love the campus. I just recently discovered Holcomb Gardens. What? I live about two miles away! It absolutely beautiful in the spring. Fountains, statues, waterfalls, adorable mid-century modern home (gotta get the history on that). You can access the canal from the gardens and walk or run over to the IMA. Best part of today's visit...walking the canal and seeing a cute little beaver chewing some grass from the bank of the canal and swimming off with it. Awwwww... read more

How does one review such a place? I'm a Butler Alumnus, class of 2007. I spent 5 years here and I miss it every day. It was, so far the best time of my life, and sometimes I fear I will never have the great times, or meet the amazing people I did at beautiful BU. Sometimes we jokingly call it Butler High, or refer to the blanketed security of the Butler bubble, but I think we all know that now or later we will view it with a fondness usually reserved for family members. I had the distinct pleasure of sharing my love for Butler with potential students as an employee of the admissions office, it was a great time and I loved every minute of it. I know more about the history and idiosyncrasies of this place than most, and still feel as close to it as I did on the day I received my degree. The grounds are beautiful, and if you live in Indy and have never stopped by, please do, it's a great place for a walk, on campus or in the gardens behind campus. The buildings are big beautiful and old, it looks like the kind of place you envision when you hear the word university. The education is the best in the state and they administration cares about progressing that reputation as far as they can, Dr. Fong is a masterful president and has done great things for the Bulldog community. The basketball team has been a part of the national spotlight over the past decade and is enjoying great recruiting from it. Aside from all that the best part of Butler is the indescribable way it's students feel when they stride across campus, knowing they are making them selves better. I don't know who reads a review on a university on a website like this, but hopefully if you're considering Butler for a college choice you'll give it a go and schedule an interview today! read more

This place is gorgeous. It really is. It's right in the wealthy section of the city proper, so the local neighborhood is safe and just as gorgeous. For this same reason, the schools tends to be a bit more upper-crust than the others in town. It's Butler that gets the Pulitzer Prize winning authors to come and do readings (though they don't check IDs, making it possible to sneak in for events like that). Being already downtown, it can be irritating to navigate out, as there are few major highways that run right by it. But Butler has the advantage of being located a stone's throw from Broadripple, and that's where a large chuck of the city's action is at. Though I've visited this place a number of times for a number of different reasons (it's not a dry campus and has Pulitzer Prize winning authors), I've never actually taken a class there. So I couldn't personally testify to the class quality, and size. My friends give nothing but praise, but they could just be mocking me for going to a city college. read more

Butler is a great choice -- what more can I say? I attended from 2010-2014. I was not Greek, and I participated in student government and the university newspaper. A fellow alum from Butler - May 2013 grad. Loved my time at Butler and thought the experiences and opportunities were great. I met some amazing people before, during, and after my time. Once a Dawg, always a Dawg. You'll see and meet them all over the world! Paying off that student loan debt every month is always a horrible reminder of how much it cost to go there for undergrad but it was definitely worth it. One thing: if you're into Greek life, you'll LOVE it there. Greek life sort of runs the campus although they claim that only 35% of students are involved in Greek life. Definitely take advantage of studying abroad and the Holcomb gardens and the free sporting event tickets as well! Go dawgs! read more

I will not fail to have positive associations with the Reilly Room in Butler's Atherton Union because I saw the amazing poet Mark Strand read here this week. There was ample seating and the temperature and acoustics were good. The intro was short and sweet and the Q&A session was minimally painful. The offered books for sale and a signing afterward. The whole experience was outstanding mostly because Mark Strand is charming and brilliant, but I give Butler kudos for bringing him to town. Strand's visit was part of the Vivian S. Delbrook writers series, which was awesome this year, though, sadly, Edwidge Danticat was cancelled due to the earthquake in Haiti and Lucille Clifton passed away before her appearance. If a certain blog is correct, next-year's list promises to be as impressive, including the likes of Margaret Atwood, George Saunders, Jonathan Lethem, Richard Russo and more. I about died and went to nerd heaven when I read the list. The person who organizes the series has a "Vonnegut" in her name, which may explain the stellar lineup. read more

I am a Butler Alumnus as well. I graduated in 2008 and frequently go back to hang out. The best part about Butler is the quality education in such an intimate environment. I really felt that I could approach any professor and I was not just one of the masses. I now live close to Bloomington and am falling in love with IU's campus. Comparing Butler and IU is really apples and oranges. Butler is great for what it is. I wanted a high level and more personal college experience. IU is a prestigious school in an awesome city with many great traditions. I think Butler gave me an edge in my field over some students from other schools just based on our preparation. If I went back, I'd choose Butler again, but maybe IU for grad school. read more

6 years and I just cannot get enough. Butler has been my home for longer than I can remember. I am originally from outside of St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Indy in 2012 to begin school. And here is the deal, I don't know if I will ever be headed back. St. Louis is an awesome awesome city, but there is nothing like the community of old I formed while Butler. Here are my TOP 3 reasons to choose Butler. Numbero uno, when you choose Butler, you are choosing the city of Indy. Butler is tucked about 15 minutes north of downtown (think Pacer's games and groovy restaurants) and 7 minutes south of Broad Ripple (think cool bars along a great walking trail). And the campus is beautiful. Number 2, there is nothing like Butler's professors. They are sincerely invested in their students futures. And finally #3, Butler Basketball. There is nothing like a basketball game in Hinkle Fieldhouse. Nothing. Go dawgs! read more

I graduated from here in 2000. I have mixed feelings when I graduated, but over the years my feelings have changed. For the most part, I feel I got a great education. In both the books and in life. I was given great opportunities to work, explore, try and fail, screw up and still was supported to continue to expand my experiences and my mind. Even though I'm not in my chosen field, I still remember some of the things that my professors taught me, most of them weren't during class. I really do appreciate them for doing that. A lot has changed here since I was here, but none of it do I feel has downgraded it. Small classes and personal attention are still here and helped make my time here a great time. Oh and they're basketball team is apparently pretty good too. read more

I have great memories of Butler! It's where I went to college and mostly now after seeing how some other colleges operate (watching my fiance attend different colleges, and working at a local one myself) I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to go to an institution such as this. Most of the staff, faculty, and administration truly care about the students. I miss the university and being a part of it. It continually strives to be the best of its kind and truly does set a good example for those that attend or get to be affected by it. The campus is forever changing, growing and continually out doing itself. It's a beautiful campus and everyone is welcome to come enjoy gardens, the performing arts, visit at the Starbucks, enjoy the games at the Historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, watch Butler Basketball games or any sports, and enjoy the beautiful Holcomb Gardens. Many people in the area come to the University to take pictures as it truly is so picturesque. It is surrounded by not so nice neighborhoods if you go too far away from the Butler bubble as we use to call it. I always felt safe on campus and there are blue phones everywhere. You can always ask for a police escort if you need to go somewhere that you don't feel like want to walk alone. There is a lot of construction and additions as the university continues to grow and improve. I highly recommend mostly if you are looking for that close knit family feel. You won't get lost like at the larger universities, you will have faculty and administration who truly care about you, it is easy to make new friends, and there are so many options of what to study and things to do. Even if you are not looking for a college to attend, you should stop by to visit....watch a Butler basketball game or just admire it's beauty. It's the perfect blend of nature, history, tradition, and moderness! Fun fact: butler was the first location in Indiana to receive a Starbucks! Fun fact: Butler's Men's basketball team made it to the final game against Duke in 2010 and became the smallest school to ever make it this far. read more

Butler cafeteria food is great! So we are visiting Indy and our daughter takes us to lunch @Butler! Great variety, fresh veggies, very good homemade spinach Stromboli thingie! I'm not an alumnus of Butler, but was lucky enough to attend a beautiful wedding at Holcomb Gardens. It was the perfect setting for the ceremony even though it rained. Just as the bridal party decided to move forward with the ceremony, the rain stopped right on cue and the clouds parted to let the sun shine. I kid you not. read more

So spacious! The signs are pretty small that it could be hard to miss what you're looking for. We were headed to their bookstore and barely found it as it was written in size 10 font on a sign. Seriously?!!!! We headed to their gift shop and passed through their eatery area. Super small! And had a funk smell. Decent sized book store but I expected that and the food center to be slightly bigger. read more

I did not attend Butler University for my undergrad career, but within 2 weeks of moving to the Indianapolis area I was taken on a walk through the campus and around the trails. I LOVE taking walks here! Because it's right on the canal, and there are little "artsy" things to look at along the way it makes your walk all the more fun! I came to butler university for a wonderful dining experience during the "brunch" hours. The silverware was plastic, plates styrofoam, and my "banana" pancakes had no sign of "banana" anywhere. Overall I expected more. read more
