Commencement ceremony

Came to the university for graduation. The campus was very nice. Graduation was scheduled out doors but due to intense rain had to be moved in doors. Parking was pretty far from the fitness center where the event was being held, and they actually had students with golf carts picking families up and driving them to graduation. How amazing of them and it was much appreciated as I was in heels and the walk was pretty far. Additionally, the school provided graduation gifts on site you can purchase to give to the graduate! How amazing is that! I enjoyed the experience very much. The graduation from start to finish was 45 minutes which I truly appreciate.

I recently returned to campus to explore their impressive collection of public art. Having been a graduate of the university back in 1980, I was amazed at the transformation the grounds of the school had undergone. Back then, most of the art was confined to the classrooms and to exhibits that were put on by the art department. Now, there are green ways and a water installation as well as nearly two dozen art installations. As a fan of bringing art to the masses, I believe the school should be commended for its devotion to the arts. Only the campus of IUPUI has a more expansive collection than this private school. In fact, U of I has published a walking tour of the numerous pieces. If you are a fan of art, plan a trip to visit this campus to appreciate the creativity and artistic expression on campus. I spent four years of my life at the University of Indianapolis. It will always be U of I to me, but I guess they are going with the UIndy moniker these days. Oh well. I studied communication, marketing and Spanish here and had a great experience overall. Any university experience is based so much on personal taste, but I liked what I found here. I never had a problem with a professor and they all seemed like they genuinely cared about the students. In fact, back in my senior year of high school, that attitude was what made me decide to go to U of I (well that, and the fact that they gave me the best scholarship offer). I knew I wanted to go to school in Indianapolis and it came down to U of I and Butler. Admittedly, Butler's campus is a LOT prettier than U of I's. But I really got the feeling from all of the admissions counselors at U of I that they actually cared about me and wanted me to go to school there. Throughout the four years there, I generally encountered the same attitude from every faculty and staffer. I would recommend U of I to any high school student who is exploring colleges. It's not for everyone - it is pretty small and definitely doesn't offer the big college experience that you'll find at other Indiana campuses - but it is worth at least visiting to see what they have to offer in terms of academics, athletics, student life and financial aid. If you are an adult in Indianapolis and seeking education opportunities, U of I also offers several graduate degrees, including a MBA program, as well as undergraduate degrees through their School for Adult Learning. I'd give the school a five-star rating, but was recently pretty angry about the fact that my personal info (including SSN) was comprised by a hacker through their IT system and the way the school handled it. But... I can't hold that incident against four years of a solid education!

Don't do it! I was excited to continue my doctoral studies…read moreat ACE, as it was a great alternative and a value. The school was also excited for me to continue my education journey by being attentive initially. Two enrollment issues were very difficult to resolve as ACE does not provide proper support. I understand the school is more cost-effective by decreasing overhead with staff, but when your "advisor" never reaches out or provides a response, one of two things is happening: They don't care, or they are overworked and can't manage the workload. Additionally, the studies did not meet the professional requirements that one would consider necessary for the course. For example, I was taking an organizational behavior course, and the entire course was based on the triple bottom line: what the organization is doing for the community and the environment. These are fundamental aspects of any organization but are not the entirety of its behavior. The course had little added value for my professional journey. The course load is manageable, but if someone takes more than one course per semester, which they recommend, it's not manageable. If you are working, forget about it. I was surprised that ACE doesn't follow the norm of two courses that are done one at a time per semester. Someone told me long ago that you get what you pay for. Lesson learned: a costly one at that. If you are thinking of going to ACE, I would encourage you to weigh your options and look at other schools that offer better program structures.

ArtMix is an Indianapolis-based non-profit organization that has been in existence since I was a kid in school, though it began life as Very Special Arts. They have four core programs, a variety of special projects, and quite a few opportunities to support them ranging from visiting their art gallery to joining them for First Fridays and others. As they note on their website, in the early days of public education for those with disabilities it was uncommon for us to be integrated into regular classrooms. An organization like this was used to fill in that gap. While I was often discouraged from creativity, this was an organization that encouraged it. The fact that I'm now a published writer, film critic, producer, and occasional actor is proof positive of how positive their influence can be. It should be noted that shopping in their gallery is by appointment only. Like a lot of non-profits, they have a small staff. The core programs for ArtMix include urban artisans, entrepreneur artisans, community classes, and artists-in-residence. In terms of accessibility, despite being in a challenging building they do well with ramps at the back entrance (and free parking in the back lot). The building itself is locked - there's a call box that you'll use (again, they request appointments). First Friday events are cool, the gallery is wonderful (and does support artists with disabilities. Yay.). I'm very pleased with this organization. It's only gotten better over the years. While I'm no longer that student sitting in a classroom, ArtMix reaches out even more these days and is truly a community organization. If you've never checked them out, I definitely recommend it.

I went for the second year to their holiday open house to do my yearly ornament shopping for family and friends. There are beautiful, one-of-a-kind ornaments, plates, bowls, and other ceramic pieces.
