I've been a weekend volunteer for Buster's Friends for at least the past year (as well as a foster) and they do good work here to find forever homes for dogs and cats up for adoption. People can adopt pets here as well as volunteer and foster pets. The pets are often rescued before being put to sleep and they are spayed, neutered, and any medical conditions are well-treated through the kind services of numerous volunteers. They used to be located at Highland Village, but since they moved to Uptown Park due to the old location being leased, there hasn't been as much foot traffic unfortunately. All we can do is to help spread the word about the pets available here every weekend. Adoption fees are $100 to ensure that they are being adopted by people who truly want to give these pets a good home. PLEASE NOTE: Keep in mind that this is not the pound and that Buster's Friends want to ensure that the dogs and cats that they rescue end up in homes that are good long term matches. If you apply to adopt a pet here, especially the dogs, please understand that not every application is approved. Some dogs here are universally great fits for any home, but there are some dogs here that have particular needs and require a specific home environment based on what has been learned through fostering. While they want to find homes for every pet, they also want to make sure that the homes will be a good fit. I'm never going to try to adopt a cat through Buster's Friends again!! My time trying to adopt with Busters was nothing but stressful and we never ended up getting the cat we needed. The foster moms know nothing of the process, the online profiles are inaccurate, the adoption "agent"(?) I guess tried her best but she kept making me talk about my dead cat and questioned why we did not get him autopsied. All in all the most frustrating experience I've ever had while adopting a cat and I've been adopting and rescuing strays my whole life with my family. The entire process is very unprofessional and they give very vague details about the adoption process in general. We were denied by the agency even after proving several times that we have raised healty, happy, and long living kitty companions. That being said, the animals in their care DO deserve homes and lots of love. The animals are not the problem and if you can stick through their adoption process by all means adopt your pet for life. read more

I was going to leave a 2 star review, but after remembering that we were told we would get a two week trial period with whatever animal we wanted to adopt to see if it would get along with our cats and we NEVER even got that, I don't feel like Buster's Friends even deserves 2 stars. My girlfriend and I recently lost one of our cats and we wanted another cat to help our 3 year old cat feel less lonely and not bother our senior cat. We were interested in Dot, Kit Kat, Boris, Holly, and then Yara. Although Dot seemed extremely sweet when we met her and her profile said she was good with other cats, the screening agent told us that wasn't actually the case and she didn't get along with other pets. Okay, next cat then. Kit Kat is apparently extremely close with another cat named Cocoa and they want to be adopted as a pair. Not only could we not afford to adopt a second cat, but we were also guilt tripped because the husband of the foster mom is "really attached" to Kit Kat. So not only would we be separating Kit Kat from Cocoa, but apparently some random guy also wants her even though he's not adopting her? They also said Kit Kat hissed at people that visited him, but gave zero indication of socialization issues in his description. So whatever, next cat. Boris was apparently too sick. Not his fault, but kinda disappointing. He apparently had some contagious disease so we couldn't adopt him. Another family expressed interest in Holly while we were talking with the screening agent about her so we couldn't get her either. Eventually we found Yara and my girlfriend was interested, but we gave up after the screening agent kept pestering my girlfriend about why my cat died. Not to mention, the methods in which some of the foster moms discourage bad behavior (according to one of the foster moms themselves) included spraying them with water and shaking pennies in a jar at them. We spent an extensive amount of time talking with the screening agent and made it absolutely clear on multiple occasions that we've had cats our entire lives and had plenty of space and could take care of another cat. But after 2 weeks and 5 attempts at adopting a cat, I've lost my patience and I'm done trying with Buster's Friends. If you can put up with it, then by all means adopt a pet. It's a wonderful thing to do and I'm definitely still going to adopt a cat. But I'd rather adopt anywhere than with Buster's Friends. PSA we found them through Petsmart and also drove to two different locations multiple times to find these cats. Petsmart is convenient, but you're better off going to the Humane Society or Houston SPCA or literally anywhere else. The one good thing I can say is that their application doesn't smell too bad if you burn it. read more

I have always fought with myself regarding wanting to adopt a pup. I know that there are animals who need homes, so why buy from a breeder? I have searched for a specific type of dog through numerous adoption agencies and finally found one available at Buster's Friends in Highland Village. Excited and willing, I contacted the organization, I filled out an application, and I got a call... "we're so sorry, while your application looks perfect, the fact that you crate train your animals means that we cannot allow you to adopt." As I sat and tried to allow this lady to understand how I am an amazing pet owner, and how she could receive numerous letters of recommendations not only from my veterinarian, my dog sitter (who is a vet tech), and any number of my friends and family members who aren't actually dog lovers, but LOVE my dog...I realized that the effort was pointless. I got off of the phone with her, and thought to myself how there are a lot of pups out there who need homes. There are a lot of organizations out there who could really benefit from having me adopt one of their animals, and the fact that this woman allows her personal issues with crate training to prohibit this dog, or ANY dog in their care (i verified that they wouldn't allow me to adopt ANY dog they had because I crate train my animals) from finding an amazing home such as mine, really repulses me and turns me off of the whole idea of adopting. It's just a shame that their animals (who are crated all day during adoption periods for their safety and the safety of those looking to adopt animals), won't have the opportunity to find a forever home in a loving, responsible home like mine. I am giving them 2 stars because I still feel that adoption is a great way to go, and their dogs appear to be healthy, but as I was told last night, there are animals in their care who have gone YEARS without adoption. read more

Shazia C. just reminded me to review this adoption center. Thanks! It's located where the old Sharper Image use to be. They are open every weekend Saturdays 10am-6pm and Sundays 12pm-6pm. They only have a handful (about 10-15 animals) of both dogs and cats each weekend, but they bring different ones each week. So stop by weekly if you don't find your perfect pet. The staff is very helpful and will allow you to walk and play with any of the pets. I even saw someone bring their own pet to see if they can add another furry friend to their family. This place is very clean, organized and very spacious inside. I recommend this place for anyone who is trying to find a furry addition. read more

We adopted our boys last year and these are two of the most adorable and loving cats we've ever seen - let alone owned. It's a testament to the foster care the pets receive. They responded almost immediately to our inquiry and met us the next day. We had the chance to meet the kids before we adopted and we able to take them home immediately. This rescue group is amazing they helped me with a no eyed baby kitten this week and for that I will always be greatful. I would recommend anyone to contact them with a pet in need or to adopt or join their group. I'm a animal lover and hope to one day be a part of a shelter or rescue group myself, but I'm glad for now that when I've done all i can do there are people like them that can help. Since I don't like to go to pet stores or get dogs from breeders, I was wanting to adopt a dog from a rescue shelter. Unfortunately the staff at Buster's Friends informed me that they only allow adoptions if the dog will be kept inside as opposed to outside in an enclosed yard with a large covered patio. I was astounded that a shelter would be so closed-minded regarding finding homes for dogs that have been kept in kennels or homeless. The particular dog I was interested in had not been fostered and was a stray; therefore I do not believe any of the staff could attest to its previous environment or preference. The dog was very large and tagged as a one year old. I am shocked they would rather adopt a large 1yr old dog to someone who works all day and leaves the dog in an apartment/house with nobody home as opposed to a dog having freedom to lie in the sun and enjoy the fresh air. I informed them I did not work and was home most of the day and would bring the dog inside if the weather was bad. I do not understand why they believe a large young dog is best kept indoors. The staff said she "would not let me adopt the dog because it would be kept outside". I have referrals from my vet as well as two vets from Gulf Coast Clinic regarding my ability to care for dogs. I am a great dog owner and the dog would have loved it here. An attentive rescue organization would have at least suggested that they visit my home to see the environment, yet the staff eliminated the dog's opportunity for a great home without further consideration. It is a shame the Buster's Friends staff kept the dog from being adopted based upon their predetermined ideas regarding an inside vs. outside environment (especially when the dog was a stray, not currently being fostered, and they have no knowledge of its background). Shame on you Buster's Friends....you are not making decisions that are in the best interest of the animals under your care. If you will not adopt a dog to be kept outside, you should post this information on your website and on petfinder so those who cannot have a dog inside the home at all times will avoid a visit to your adoption center. read more

I adopted two 3 month old kittens from Petsmart 3 weeks ago. Petsmart off of Katy fwy uses Buster's friends for their cat adoptions. After the 3 hours it took to get the two kittens home, I noticed they were covered in fleas. I do not or have not had a pet in my place. I tried to get a hold of someone at Buster's friends to tell them what was going on and I could not reach anyone even with the numbers Petsmart gave me. I give petsmart credit because when I told them of the problem they gave me flea treatments for the kittens. I have only had the kittens for a week and a half and noticed they had some type of worms. They both had tapeworms. I paid $125 per kitten and then I had to pay $140 per kitten at the Vet Clinic to get them taken care of. A grand total of $530 in two weeks for two kittens. Also, the paperwork was not correct. I do not have the neutering paperwork for one of the kittens. They put a copy of the other kitten in the packet given too me. I understand having pets and they sometimes cost money but I think the ability to get a hold of the adoption place is imperative. None of the phone numbers on the documentation connected me to anyone. They also have a 72 hour clause to return the animal. Only good thing so far is now I have two healthy kittens.
