Continuing our hike via the Riesling Trail, Paulett Winery was the chosen highlight for a fancy lunch, a reward for climbing a hill to reach this place with a stunning view of the Clare Valley.
Being Sunday, the place was packed to the rafters. Eventhough we made a reservation, we were made to wait. That didn't bother us in the slightest, as that gave us an opportunity to sample all the wines they had available.
We were seated eventually and water was offered. We ordered a round of drinks before giving the wait staff our food orders.
While waiting, we had a good around, soaking in the view, the family atmosphere and just enjoying the general vibe of the place.
The staff was courteous and helpful, albeit a tad stressed.
Entrees in the form of warm bread and dukkhah arrived and hungrily it we gobbled it down.
The issue arose when our mains took more than hour to arrive. As we have hiked a long way, feeling cold and tired, our sugar levels dropping, it became apparent that perhaps they have forgotten about us.
Those around us that was seated after us appeared to be eating. So, with that in mind, one of our friends decided to check on our food progress. Quickly, we were offered a complimentary round of drinks and apologies was distributed.
I was famished, so like a little piggy, pigged out on my two mains. Yep...I know! You are probably thinking "what a champ"
I had the pork and muntrie burger with kangaroo bacon. My second dish was the chicken verde with cornbread.
Both was delicious and hit all the right spot. Unfortunately, one of our vegan friend's fish and chips was below par. She wasn't advised that as an alternative to chips, she would receive a potato fritter. Chips should be gluten-free except these were dusted in wheat flour. Already annoyed by the long wait, and then to not get what you were expecting made her experience rather negative. The fish's coating was 'odd', lacked flavour and was generally beige.
Having said that, everyone else enjoyed their meals with great gusto.
Would I return? YES! It is just lovely sitting on the balcony overlooking the valley. The service was generally good. They do have a young girl who served us came across as rather 'green'.
I recommend this place to all those who appreciate local regional produce, with some of the best riesling in the country while watching mother nature put on a show.
