Great food, great service & location but very pricy and watch out for 10% service charge added on the bill!

A well recommended "smart" Thai restaurant with delicious mid-priced food…read moreThai Secret is undoubtedly one of the best Thai restaurants in the Surbiton/Kingston area. The food is delicious, the portions are generous and the service is friendly (you can even practice your Thai should you wish, but the staff are all fluent in English of course). Starter wise, the soups can be a little mild occasionally but if you ask then they are happy to make the heat more authentic for you. The other starters are mostly the usual that you'd expect to find, but the Tuna Carpaccio deserves a mention, being extremely tasty and a break from the norm. Mains are again what you'd expect to find, but are executed really well. The Pad Kra Pao is always good and, like the other stir fries, is available containing a good choice of meats and veg. A nice touch is that you can have most dishes with pork (which I find is often the best for Thai food) and even with minced pork, which I'm informed is even more like traditional cuisine. The Pad See Ew noodles are also exceptionally tasty, with the noodles and vegetables cooked slightly al dente. I haven't tried the Pad Thai noodles but they look very good indeed. The restaurant is more "smart" than the average Thai restaurant, as they often tend to be either sparse or a wooden clad affair. Thai Secret is tiled in dark colours and mood lighting and has a sophisticated feel to it. There is a good selection of wines too. I'm really glad I tried the place on a whim some time ago. It has certainly become my Thai restaurant of choice in the area. Highly recommended!

We've probably tried 10-15 dishes by now and everything we've eaten has been excellent from the classic green curry to the pad Thai to the pad see eew. My husband is a vegetarian- they do a great job of accommodating- huge menu that doesn't put fish sauce in everything so there's a lot more choice than at most other places. My absolute favourite is the crispy duck. If I could, I would eat that dish every day. It is divine. Perfect mix of crispy salty sweet. Service is excellent. Atmosphere is formal but cozy. Make sure to book in advance though. It's a small restaurant and they're often full even on weekdays.

It is not silly expensive, but, as with all Thai restaurants, you always end up ordering more than one dish, so the price really adds up. In fact, the only time when I order plenty of dishes is when I am being taken on a date here (and it is obvious that we are not going to go Dutch). I think one of the reasons why it is pricey is that the food is very well made; you can tell that good quality ingredients have been used. Importantly for all MSG phobics - they do not use this additive in any of the dishes. Also they must have to charge a lot because it is a very large restaurant - the trouble is that it is often quiet, so you may find yourself eating with just a few other tables filled. If you do come here, you will find that pretty much everything on the menu is a good choice. Choose a mixed starters, which includes the Thai fish cakes. For a main, I always go for a fish dish - the crispy Tilapia fish, or Seafood on Fire (very hot), are both delicious. Of course the curries are worth having here too. Vegetarians will be happy to here that there is a comprehensive separate vegetarian menu - I often order from here and am always happy with my choice.

The staff were all very professional, helpful and friendly. At the same time it was not stuffy and didn't make you feel uneasy. We tried the sampler platter for appetizer which was delicious. It was a good array of the their wonderful cuisine. The fried appetizers were not greasy and cooked just right. Loved the chicken/nuts dumpling, very unique and full of flavor and spices. For entree we tried the Lamb curry, sea bass curry, meat curry and pad Thai. They were all a hit, but the sea bass was the winner as far as we were concerned. The sauce and flavor was the perfect combination. Since it was a birthday celebration, we had the molten chocolate cake and the mango cheesecake, an amazing experience trying both (served with vanilla ice cream).
