I'm in accordance with the other reviewers that this isn't the place to come for the glamour or…read moresuperior comfort of the restaurant. However, it does rate highly for the speed and kindness of the service and significantly for the super-delicious and authentic Thai dishes, at surprisingly decent prices. It's a great place for a fast and warming lunch, on a bracing windswept day, for little more than the comparable cost of an unremarkable sandwich elsewhere. There's a buzzing, yet chilled, atmosphere here in the evenings; every dish I've tried from Pad Thai to curry and rice has been fresh, tasty, filling and hasn't disappointed.

It took our party a long time to decide what we wanted but waitresses were patient and kind. Chef's selection showed a good range of all fried items. Also tried the prawn and chicken served in lettuce cups which were tasty. Main course choices in our party included Penang and Green curries which were of the right chilli heat, steamed seabass with chilli and lemon came in a nice broth, fried seabass was enjoyable and prawn with galangal, lime leaves and lemongrass was enjoyable too. Nice choice of rice/noodles on the side with the option for soups if desired. Overall, speed of service was fast, efficient and the food came out quickly. Saw quite afew take-away orders and regulars during our visit so obviously a popular establishment. I would say the food isn't the best Thai food on the planet, but certainly tasty, moreish and enjoyable, plus excellent value for money, around 18-20pounds pp for starters, drinks, main dish and side. We all had a lovely evening and would certainly return.

I was recommended this place by a friend, so it is really only fair if I now, having been and…read moreenjoyed it, recommend it to my friends. Though allow me to elaborate if you will. I went on a weeknight during a recession, which meant that it was very nearly empty. That said, the decor is modern and trendy, offering something different to many places in the same genre. Capacity is good, meaning it felt more empty than it actually was, and I hope that if I try it on a weekend the atmosphere would be much better. That aside, the service was prompt, efficient and friendly, and the food was excellent. I was immediately drawn to the vegetable satay, having previously only been able to wonder with my vegetarian mind what the famed chicken satay tasted like. It didn't disappoint. As a fan of peanut butter, I ended up eating the sauce on its own after the tasty veggies were finished. Next up was my usual green curry, which was not too hot but still very tasty, and great, as usual, the the celiac-friendly-but-not-immediately-obviously-so 'glutenous' sticky rice. To finish, I tried my first Thai pancake, and wonderful it was, too. A lovely blend of coconut and cream, hot and cold, soft and chewy awesomeness rounded off a very satisfying meal. And the wine wasn't half bad either. In fact, the only thing stopping the Fat Boys getting five star from me is their fondness of the worst music ever made. For me, there just isn't a good time to have Craig David, Brittney Spears et al in the background. EVER.

The reason it is a star short of the initial rating is due to the long wait after the bill arrives and the fact that one has to order rice and noodles separate from the main meal. Nevertheless, the food was tasty and in the right portion. Albeit with Thai food, I always seem to want more! I wish I could tell you what I ordered but pronouncing the name of the dish was difficult enough let alone remembering it. Two people with an alcoholic drink each and main meal came up to about 35 pounds.

Next door, the Ginger Pig was holding an urban butchery course-very chic! But, back to Somtag. As I say, it's quite small and on weekends I would definitely book. The decor is solidly Thai but in an understated way. We were greeted by the owner who was politeness itself-he told us a little of how he came to own the place. We ordered drinks and tap water was brought for us and then constantly re-filled-very good touch. Service was generally excellent. We had: Thai fish cakes soft shelled crab (both to start) Massaman lamb curry green curry Pad Thai Both starters were really good. I love Thai fishcakes, though they can get on the greasy side. These were freshly made and non-greasy with clean flavours. The soft shelled crab was very reasonably priced at about £6 but we got 2-3 huge pieces. Not the best crab I've had but for the money they were absolutely fine. I was concerned ordering the lamb curry-I have a "thing" about lamb as it can be chewy/fatty. I needn't have worried-the lamb was slow cooked, lean and wonderfully tender. The sauce was rich and deep-a revelation. The green curry was less fireworks but very nice indeed with all the attendant flavours you would expect in a good Thai curry. Pad Thai-tick yet again-huge king prawns were buried deep in the noodles. We had no desert as we could hardly walk after this. If you live in the area or even if you don't give this friendly, very competent restaurant a bash. We will certainly return.
