I'm always happy to see a new Mexican restaurant opening up in Cologne. Like the majority of Americans living in Germany, more variety of tacos and burritos are always welcome!
BurritoRico is a spacious new burrito and taco place located near several great restaurants. The deco is hipster with rustic wood tables and several cool-looking leather chairs. (When I snapchatted some pics, a friend thought I was in a cool cafe.)
They offer several types of burritos, soft tacos, quesadillas, and nachos, with the typical meat selections- carnitas, Barbacoa, chicken. From what I remember, there are also vegan/vegetarian options, but I would double check with them first.
When we visited, I think the place had been open for only about a week or two, so you could tell the servers were new, inexperienced, and a little unsure- but that was fine, since they were also friendly and business was slow when we came anyway.
Now to the most important topic- food. We had the burrito bowl with Carnitas and tacos with chicken. I'm willing to pay more for Mexican food if it's good, but there were just some issues with taste. The corn tortillas for the tacos were stale and dry, the meat was a bit too salty. Somehow the ingredients and flavors just did not blend with the beans, cheese, tomatoes the way a really good Mexican taco or burrito should.
In addition, why don't any Mexican places offer hard tacos here?
Food was a bit expensive but on par with other burrito places I've been to here. 17€ for two people including drinks.
Conclusion: Nice atmosphere, good location, and I would give this place another shot, as I hope they can work out some of these issues for true Mexican-food loving people/expats who are probably hoping to satisfy their burrito cravings here. I think this place has good potential, and I hope to see its progress. read more
