Now many people think somewhere in America is the burger capital of the world, but they are actually now mistaken. Glasgow now has more burger places per square metre of city... True story! Ok well maybe not, but they have a hell of a lot and I have eaten in most of them. So I know a good burger when I have one. This is my favourite place to eat in Cologne that I have found so far across three separate work trips. Everything about this burger joint is cool. Extremely friendly and helpful staff, cool house wine, retro hippsterish interior décor. The you add in the fact the burgers are ace. I had the BBQ one and it was tasty and juicy. The bun was crisp and the fries were great. You can also have tatties with your burger instead of fries if you want. All in it is a great burger place and definitely worth a visit. I will be back! (Just be wary though, it is quite small and can fill up quickly) read more

Beautiful Saturday Evening in Köln so a perfect day for a great Burger dinner. But then again when isn't a good day for a burger? I have been to the chain Freddy Schillings before so I already knew the burger I wanted to order. Being able to sit outside would have been nice but the openness of the restaurant was nice and it had a hipster feel to it. I knew I wanted the Ziegenpeter burger and wanted the sauce platter to be able to try all the different sauces. The burger was cooked good and the goat cheese was excellent but it was missing a sauce. It was a little dry at times and if there would have been more sauce it would have been 5 stars. The fries were crispy golden brown and the sauces were good. There was 8 different ones. I think they are all worth a try but my favorites were the Kahuna sauce, garlic sauce, burger sauce and plain mayo. It's fun to be able to have a lot of choices. And with free sauce refills is great. Also being able to buy my favorite Beer in Germany, the Gaffels Sonnenhopfen is a thumbs up also. Great place for a beautiful Saturday evening dinner. read more

TL;DR I'm from California and I love a good burger. Everything we ordered here was delicious! The last time I tried to get a burger in Germany I went to a place in Berlin and I left pretty disappointed. I'm pleased to report: the burgers at Freddy Schilling are delicious! I had the Big Kahuna burger with bacon. I ordered it medium and it came cooked perfectly with a little pink in the center. The meat was moist and flavorful and the sauce and seasonings were super tasty. My girlfriend ordered the same burger with a veggie patty and she also loved it. A lot of times, veggie patties are dry and flavorless but she happily devoured this one. We also really enjoyed the medium-thick fries and homemade ketchup. The fries were crispy on the outside and moist in the center-- just like good fries are supposed to be. If you like burgers you'll love this place. Run don't walk. Let me rate this two different ways: Compared to burgers found in Europe: One of the best I've had! Compared to burgers found in the States: Mediocre.... Yes, it's true what they say.. you truly don't know what you have until it's gone.. I was never a burger type of person. However, after moving to Germany I really missed a good burger once in a while.. I guess I took for granted the burgers we had in the states. What makes a great burger in my book means a few of the following: -Flavorful meat -Perfectly cooked (medium rare-medium) -Juicy.. not to be mistaken for greasy -Crisp, fresh vegetables -Buns... because we all love some good buns! At Freddy Schilling I opted for a classic burger with fries.. because what better way to evaluate a burger than trying it in it's most natural state! The burger was juicy, but a bit overcooked for me.. if what I got was medium rare, then I would hate to see what well done looks like.. aka, mine was cooked through completely. The burger wasn't greasy, but instead, it was a bit too saucy for me.. Just a simple ketchup and mayonnaise mixture, but too much where it was spilling out. The bun was lightly toasted, but not dry where it hurts the roof of my mouth. The veggies were pretty good, consisting of cool, crisp cucumber, tomato, lettuce, and thinly sliced onion. The fries were crisp, and lightly salted. Again, not greasy, which is great! This is not your fast food type of burger.. this ranks on the gourmet side! Overall, I would say this is one of the best burgers I've had in Europe. So if you're living in Germany, or on a European vacation and happen to be near, make sure to stop by to satisfy your burger craving! read more

Great! The second Location is absolutely perfect! In a nice well connected area, the place is bigger as the Original one, it even has a waiter and a couple of tables outdoors. Of course the burgers are as good as on the other one! It has no sign yet so it's not that easy to see the place! The best part: it's just a couple of stations away from home! I guess i'll be a regular here :) My Big Kahuna was absolutely great! The cole slaw was a bit dry, but well, i came for the burger! It is rare that I am in a new city and randomly walk into a restaurant that I haven't researched. Usually that will end in disappointment. Tonight I was more than pleasantly surprised. Freddy Shilling's looked cool from the outside and did not disappoint on the inside. Three of us, each ordering different burgers and each having a bit of burger envy of the others. My Kahuna Burger was perfectly cooked and really tasty. The fries were great, and we were even treated to a "flight" of sauces, including a spicy ketchup, a mayo, a BBQ and a couple more. On our way out the manager brought us three shots of Jagermeister. Perfect finish to a great meal. read more

Ordered Freddy's favorite and fries. I have to be honest, the appeal of this place appears to be more about atmosphere than food. Also, it doesn't get much more hipster foodie than house made ketchup. The burger was average and overcooked. If you were to pick a random burger joint in North America you'll find better flavor. No fast food or gurmet burger bullshit. No Pepsi no Coke, just Fritz Cola (Yay!). And all their staff are friendly, fun and they cook with sytle (Bandana, sunglasses, gloves like style). I've been there twice with my family. Only because they have gluten free buns, so after a first not impressive experience I was willing to give them another chance. Both times the buns ware dry. The meat lacks any seasoning. Unless you order the spicy burger and your mouth is burning, you will not notice. Otherwise, it's just a bad excuse for a burger. I also asked for just a burger with bun for a small child, and it got delivered covered with catchup, which is their standard kid's burger. Not what I asked for (I do speak fluent German, no language barriere). On positive side, the fries are homemade, and really good. If you like your burger well done, make sure to ask for it, by default its medium rare. The staff is great, and the custom take-away boxes are cool. In total, what a disappointment! I had the Italian burger and honestly it had way too much going on on top of a pretty standardized patty that could of came from anywhere, the fries seemed either old or oven baked, either way the meal was very lackluster. Good burger chain. No sweet potatoe fries though. Liked the Veggie big kahuna burger & the different sauces thes offer.

Always start with the positive: The french fries are freshly cut and come still with the skin on. The fries have great consistency and taste delicious. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for their burgers. First of all, the meat patty was watery inside (guessing they use frozen patties, not freshly formed patties). Also the bun isn't any special and was dry. I guess I am used to the damn good burgers in the States. Yet I have heard good things about Karl Herman's, which is also in Cologne. Based on the pictures, I want to give it a try. Their Buns seem to be made fresh. Freddy Schilling's burgers are overrated though the fries are delicious. read more
