Burney Falls/Hat Creek KOA - August 13, 2023 - day 2
Bruce O.

Burney Falls/Hat Creek KOA - August 13, 2023 We arrived on a Sunday afternoon after spending four days in the desert watching for Perseid meteors. We had had zero cell coverage there and were a little anxious to reconnect. They have full hookups and Wi-Fi works great at the store area, but no Wi-Fi in the park propper. No cell coverage for us either. We got checked in and Scott, at the front counter, did a nice job explaining some of the local attractions for the area. Most of the sites here are fairly large, and since the camp wasn't terribly full, our rigs were spaced out across the park. That gives a feeling of openness. They have a store at the main office as well as a café that is open certain days of the week, Friday and Saturday 8:30-10:30 am and 4-7 pm, and Sunday 8:30-10:30 am. They have a laundry mat and a game room. They also have a pond where you can do catch and release fishing. A lot of the sites are right next to the pond. Hwy 89 goes right by the park, so there is some road noise. It's a clean well maintained park and staff are very friendly and helpful. Once Wi-Fi is doing better, I'll upgrade to 5 stars.

Lake on site. No fishing or swimming.

The site is close to Burney Falls and McCloud falls. A good place to stay if you like basic camping. The wifi and cellular service is very limited. You can only get service at or near the main office. I hope that changes soon. No swimming at all. Nice fire pit. We used both wood and charcoal in the fire pit. The hookups were very easy. The dump is on site. The staff was awesome and very helpful. We would visit again.

Pond from our campsite

We just stayed two nights at this KOA and enjoyed it very much. They are a newer KOA so they are still getting settled in. Pros: -nice campsites around the pond with lots of pine trees. -this is one of the cleanest grounds I have camped at -pond has geese and ducks raising families. Also lots of Blue Jays, Robins, black birds, dragon flies and Butterfly's -very quiet except for road noise on the nearby hwy 89. - dog waste bags and trash bins located in several places. - nice little enclosed dog areas - walking trails through out the forrest -very nice and clean restrooms with large bathroom and shower room stalls -store hours 8am-9pm -they have some RV supplies in the store -respectful fellow campers -it is rustic with no internet or cell service. -it does have some cable channels -nice staff. At least the guy that checked us in was very professional and helpful. I do not recall his name. He was from Chili. Great asset to this property. Cons: -Very limited groceries in their store. Had to travel 30+ miles to get milk. -staff in store were more interested in a wine display than helping us out where to go for supplies -be prepared with food and drink -they have a restaurant but only open in the morning Fri-sun. -not that this is a bad thing, but it is out in the middle of beautiful nowhere. The town of Burney is about 15 miles away and there is no internet or cell service at the Kampground until you almost get to Burney. -hwy 89 road noise can get loud as it is travelled by big rigs. -their site map does not match layout and cable channels are not the same as listed on site map. We enjoyed our quiet two night stay and would definitely stay there again.

They even stocked the pond with some good sized rainbow trout (catch and release).

Our kids were bummed when I told them it was just us. I felt guilty seeing their pouting faces, so our reservation for two became one for four. Burney falls was so mesmerizing, I'm glad we brought our kids. I love waterfalls and being outside in the warm Summer months hiking or camping. We lucked out and were there right before the area was shut down for the fires nearby. We were pleasantly surprised that there were cabins and hookups for RVs right there in the park. We totally could have brought our RV instead of staying in town. It's a small town and if you have never visited a small town with any stop lights, you wouldn't understand where I'm going with this analogy. Lol! Iykyk! We had a great time and do look forward to making our way back to do some more hiking and camping. This park is a must see and a family friendly hike to get to the falls! Fun fact: Burney Falls is never dry, 100 million gallons flow daily, so no matter what time of year you visit there will be flow.

Unfortunately this week was in the middle of a 100+ degree heatwave so hanging out wasn't in the cards. We were inside with the AC on or on the Lake. Alan stopped by several times to make sure everything was perfect for us and our dogs. We felt so welcomed. He hauled our trash, provided firewood, and gave us directions to a cool beach spot on Lake Briton. Regardless of the heat, the amenities were exactly what we were looking for! Full hookups, clean, peace & quiet, friendly neighbors, etc. Our shady spot was perfect for our dogs that we had fenced in around our trailer. If Burney Falls is on your bucket list, this is the place to bring your RV!

Perfect for kids as stream is wide but very shallow. RV's in outside of circle with a beautiful common grassy area in center. Ideal for groups. Large common eating. Lots of bike riding and perfect for kids. Reasonably priced. Cons: Limited parking and very tight spaces. Charge $2/day for dog. Provide dog poop bags but nowhere to dispose. You'd think there would be some kind of disposal where the bags are but no...There is a sign that says to dispose at trash near laundry room. I walked almost the entire park and couldn't find the laundry room. And not a single trash can!!! They expect their rver's to haul their garbage across the park and then fling in into those huge dumpsters that many of us can't reach or are to old to get the needed height. And it's gross and smelly. Many parks pick up garbage daily or have reasonably sized cans spaced around the park. McCloud is noted for its wandering bears but there has to be a better solution... The next day I set out for the trash by the laundry room. I found the laundry room with a sign "Call this number and the office will text the key code. Someone is borrowing too much toilet paper." Really??? A resort this size can't afford toilet paper so the entire clientele have to suffer this inconvenience??? This wasn't for us. Could hardly get thru with one lane. Our neighbors were way too close. Tables were situated behind the rv as no room beside. Everyone had dogs but no fenced area for off lease. The dog park was a dusty trail along the fence next to the highway. Dogs were aloud on the grassy areas and everyone was good about picking up.

We paid for three nights, but fully expected to extend our stay for two or three more. But shortly after we set up Bob the camp host showed up and sort of hijacked us on a tour of the house he's building and the park waterways, the development history, and more. On the surface we thought that was very nice of him, and was very informative. But the reality was that he dragged my wife and I around on a 40-year-old golf cart while he told raunchy jokes about such things as Monica Lewinsky in great detail, shared his opinions on world affairs, bragged about his influence in the McCloud area, and more, all with a spin towards the lewd and raunchy. We tried to accommodate him because he is an elderly fellow and we had never met him, but I have to admit it times it felt like we were in the opening scenes of a trashy slasher movie, and I was looking at every shadow and open doorway for a possible sighting of someone with a hockey mask. We couldn't wait for him to drop us back off at our campsite Also, every park has upsells, which is fine. But this park advertises itself as a fly fishing Ranch but charges $65 per hour for catch and release fishing. There are at least a dozen spots within 5 miles where you can fish for free. The McCloud river is a world-class Blue ribbon trout fishing stream -free fishing with a license, all day every day The 30-amp plug didn't work, we used the 15 amp standby plug during our stay. We have a small Casita which doesn't draw much power, so it was okay. During our visit we watched Bob and his wife Maylon be more than a little overzealous with other guests about camp rules. While we were in the cart with him, he didn't think twice about stopping to chastise to adult campers who were on e-bikes on evidently the wrong trails in the park. His reasoning was that he didn't let kids bike in that area of the park because he was worried one of the children might drive a bike into one of the ponds, so he couldn't let these adults driving very sophisticated two or $3,000 e-bikes bike back there either. It was awkward for us to be in the car with him while he was addressing these other guests. The next day, we got our turn being on the wrong end of Bob and Maylons grouchiness. They pulled into our campsite and abruptly told us we had to turn our music off. We were playing Willie Nelson quite low, but they heard it from the next campsite over. No camper complained. This was at 5:00 p.m. . The park rules site quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. this was on a Monday, after we had listened to loud construction noises from a bathroom remodel two campsites over all day Saturday and Sunday until well after dark, which we did not complain about or even get bothered by until our battery powered speaker was just more than they could stand to listen to. We had conversations with other campers, wonderful folks who we met during our stay, who observed the things things we did and felt the same way. It was a common observation that it was a beautiful spot, but The grouchy and raunchy demeanor of the camp host took a lot of the joy away of the stay. One family with whom we had especially nice conversations, decided to end their trip three days early, after having driven all the way from Las Vegas, some 12-hour drive. As we exited the park I found the owner and told him how unsettling his demeanor had been and try to explain that his method of dealing with errant e-bike riders and our little speaker playing music left a lot to be desired. I told him I was especially upset by the raunchy, graphic, jokes he told in front of my wife, and he denied having told them. I feel sorry for the staff member who happened to be in the office when we were having this conversation, but I told Bob that he was a liar and reminded him we were on the deck of his new house and the exact nature of the joke that he told. He simply spun on his heel and went back into his residence. In short, if you come here expect a beautiful space but some raunchy and grouchy camp hosts/owners. If you talk to Bob, it's probably best to keep your wife and children away, and if you talk to Maylon, don't expect much in the way of smiles or gracious camp host demeanor that you might expect in such a place. To close, Fridays RV resort - been there done that, didn't buy the t-shirt, not going back.
