I've been under the impression that Avenue was likely a casual pizza and grinder takeout spot and that parking might be difficult. As I discovered this week, Avenue is much more than that, and there is ample parking behind the restaurant. I entered from the back into a small open area with a nicely decorated Christmas tree, and a cool wide painting of a street from decades ago. I wasn't prepared for the Avenue to be as comfortable and almost lodge-like as it is. Wood Floors. The walls are a mix of light colored wood and red brick. The seats and tables are dark. There's a fireplace with fresh cut wood stacked up in cubbies on each side. The Avenue is a very pleasant place to spend some time. And they clearly had a number of loyal regulars there during my lunch. The Avenue has a robust pizza and grinder menu, but they also have Italian entrees like chickens Parm, Marsala, Franchaise. Etc. They have pasta. I noticed a scallops special. Given the menu, ambience and service, it's safe to say that Avenue can cover most of your Italian restaurant needs. I was impressed by the Italian Combo grinder I ordered. It didn't look like the giant grinders we're accustomed to seeing in CT, but it was reasonably-sized and very good. The bread was fresh and good crusty. I added cherry peppers to the Italian cold cuts, veggies, cheese and mayo. The ingredients, flavors and textures were in perfect balance. I'll be back to test drive more of the menu. 4.5 Stars

The cheese sauce was soooo good and their buffalo chicken component was loads of super tender sauced pulled chicken, all topped off with crispy fried onions. It was absolutely killer! The reality is that this place is down on it's luck, and they're doing nothing by way of friendliness at all to make up for the shabby, threadbare furniture or the (*gasp*) bathroom -- the floor now squishes when you walk on it. I was afraid the toilet and I were gonna fall through to the floor below. And forget about the smell. We're going to keep trying, in hopes that we may someday witness it's reincarnation -- or renovation. You may not be so patient.

The french fries here were crispy and tasted great, the perfect pairing for a late night bite (look, eating out at 8PM is late for me). Overall, Eli Cannon's is mostly a bar, but is also a pretty solid place to grab a bite to eat. A package store that occupied the building with Elmer's closed and the bar was able to expand into that space, allowing for a much greater occupancy and less of a claustrophobic feeling on busy nights that hurt the bar pre-expansion. I went on a Thursday night, which is the Elmer's busiest night (I'm assuming since it's the unofficial start of the weekend for most CCSU students), and what would have been a crowded mess before was a lot more manageable with essentially twice the room as before. Thursday night specials included $3 Fireball shots (again - college bar), and $3 mini pitchers, which yielded roughly 4 glasses each. Very cheap and perfect for the cash-strapped college crowd. Since it is the only bar within walking distance of the CCSU campus that I know of, and located very close to the school's highway on/off ramps, Elmer's should never be hurting for business, at least while school is in session. Come winter or summer breaks, however, I could see the Elmer's being pretty dead, since most of the surrounding area is populated by the CCSU campus and students who live in the cheap apartments across the street.
