Coming to New Zealand, I didn't anticipate on having a burger at all, but I was so hungry and didn't know my way around Newmarket, I think coming here was actually fate. I cannot tell you how fantastic the Lamb Burger was--the meat was so tender, the burger literally melted in my mouth. I'm not much of a beetroot eater (and I'm told this is a common topping in Australian and New Zealand burgers), but it was different in a good way. The bun was also really good, so no complains about the burger at all. We also got the Potato Skins with Truffle Aioli--amaaazing! They were hot and fresh when it came to our table and the chunky portions were more than generous. It's such a shame I'm almost 9,000 miles away because I'm craving a meal from this place at this very moment. The staff were a fun bunch, especially our waiter, Liam, who was full of laughs. Al & Petes has always been a personal favourite for its takeaway Toasted Sandwiches. In particular the Steak and Cheese toasted is 'to die for!' Now in this day and age eating takeaways is no longer as fashionable as it once was. That said it will be a very long and chilly day in hell before anyone can convince me that eating an Al and Petes toasted sandwich is bad for you. Just look at the posted pic and ask yourself... For me, these guys nail the three most important components of a good burger…read more 1) The bun - lightly toasted, buttery, soft. 2) The meat - well seasoned, juicy and cooked to perfection 3) The toppings - simple, fresh and heapsa pickles!!! The burgers aren't huge but the sides are so good that this works in your favour. The potato skins are a must as is the charred broccoli, which promises to convert any leafy green skeptic. Drinks-wise I've always gone for their house-made sodas but on my last visit I did sneak a sip of my brothers Lewis Road Milkshakes - seriously good! A final word of warning - Burger Burger is super popular so be prepared to wait or have a drink else where first!
