When we moved to Greenlane we did a bit of exploring and Ollies caught my attention. Maybe it was the name or the big bold words burgers and ice cream subliminally triggering a desire for food or Its old school nostalgic welcoming charm of the exterior that reminded me of similar architecture from my childhood growing up in Jamaica. The one thing keeping us away was the traffic in that area especially since the parlor sits on the roundabout which made it seem like a daunting if not impossible task to get there by car much less finding a parking space. However we decided today was the day because we were tired of McDonald's soft serve and wanted real ice cream. So we had to figure this out. On the GPS next to Ollie's I saw a KFC so we knew there would be parking there, our strategy was to buy something, anything at KFC so we could park and hop over to Ollie's to see what they were all about. Luckily as we turned towards KFC there were a number of open parking spots directly in front of Ollie's main entrance. Inside was pretty much like we imagined, printed wall menus from an era pre led tv menus, red and white counters, red stools ,tables and a few arcade games in the back. The servers were friendly and quick to give out samples of the tip-top flavors and fill our order. They have a ton of flavors and interestingly they had a flavor named after my home country, Jamaican lime, so I had to give it a try, it tasted more like Florida keylime, but the name Jamaican Lime sounds much better. I eventually settled with a single waffle cone with cookies & cream and rum raisin, while the rest of the gang had Boysenberry, Kiwifruit Pavlova and Goody Gumdrops. All great flavors. To see the happy smiles and ice cream smeared across my kids faces was worth the trip. read more

What amazing service! My sister and I were visiting from the States and didn't know where to find a gluten free burger for her that evening. This was the few places open and they went and above and beyond to cook a bun free burger for her! (Which isn't a normal service they provide) We were beyond grateful to the employees who helped us. Ollies has been around for as long as I can remember and even better, it's barely changed a bit. It was my local ice cream parlour as a kid, back when going to an ice cream parlour was a treat. It was just across the roundabout from our other big treat Pizza Hut. Yep, waaaaaay back then. It retains its cool 60s decor and as far as I know is still owned by the Haines family who pretty much everyone in the greater One Tree Hill area has some association with. The big pull here is of course ice cream - 30ish flavours with all the toppings and sauces. They also do burgers, chips and the like; I've had a particularly good experience with the Nachos and lovely greasy toasties. You also can't go wrong with the milkshakes but AVOID AVOID the coffee. Last winter this was one of our two usual post soccer spots and even the staff will try and talk you out of having their coffee. It's from a tin. Nuff said. They are so nice here though that it's not a problem to bring your coffee from elsewhere as long as the kids are having a good old feed. There are spacies in the corner (oh I remember the days when you could banned from the spacies room here) and the teenage service is... what it is. My personal recommendation would be to come here after dinner for a sundae - Coconut Marshmallow, that most rare and delicious of flavours, English Toffee and Cookies'n'Cream with hot fudge sauce. Just don't eat it too often. Long may Ollies stay the same - so few things do. read more

Ollie's Burgers and Ice Cream has become a bit of a legend in Auckland. Having opened in the 1970s, Ollie's has earned its reputation as one of the best ice-cream parlours around. With flavours like caramel fudge, butterscotch pecan, Jamaican lime, licorice allsorts and raspberry and lemonade fizz on hand, the selection is unbeatable and there is something to suit every member of the family. As if choosing an ice cream flavour wasn't hard enough, Ollie's patrons are then faced with deciding between regular or waffle cones, milkshakes or thickshakes, sundaes or banana splits. My last trip to Ollie's I was overwhelmed by all the options and ended up settling on a two scoop sundae, complete with caramel sauce, cream, nuts, wafer and glace cherry. Needless to say it was incredible - too incredible in fact. Despite being way too full and actually feeling quite sick, I proceeded to east the entire sundae. A word of warning - unless you are absolutely craving a massive sugar hit, beware of the sundaes! Ollie's also offers a great selection of takeaway-type food; burgers, toasted sandwiches, nuggets, hotdogs, chips and fritters - you don't just have to stick to their ice cream range. The one issue I have with Ollie's is the decor. I know it has been around for forty years and is trying to maintain their 1970s atmosphere, but a wee facelift wouldn't hurt. Went to Ollie's for some classic milkshakes on a date night and they didn't disappoint! A huge menu full of classic flavours mixed in with the new (birthday cake was the flavour of the week). Unfortunately the tables were all dirty and the seating was a bit odd, kind of like sitting at a kiddy table. But all in all, a cute place for a shake! Ollies is my favourite ice cream shop in Auckland. There is nothing fancy about it. I have grown up with Ollies living around the corner and I have never been disappointed. The majority of the ice cream served is Tip Top, but no one expects anything more from a shop that has been around for years with the same one owner. Tucked in Royal Oak, Ollies also serves burgers and fries etc but everyone comes for the huge scoops of ice cream and the hot fudge sauce. If you think you can contain the messiness of ice cream on a cone I recommend ordering your ice cream dipped in choc. If you are a ice cream lover, you can go as far as a getting a three scoop sundae with hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. They have roughly 20 flavours to choose from. My favourite flavour which you can't buy in stores is Pineapple Choc Chunk - pineapple lump flavour is a must try!! Other alternatives are milkshake and thick shakes with any flavour ice cream. If your an ice cream lover, you can't get anymore kiwi authentic then ollies. Throw back! This place serves the kind of icecreams you used to be able to buy from the local dairy as a kid (well, if you're a 90's babe). Dozens of flavours to choose from, old school choc dip option, and absolutely HUGE scoops. Total value for money here, the toughest bit is choosing which flavours to get... I recently visited Ollie's again for the first time in nearly ten years (!) and boy was I transported back to the days when hotdogs and icecream solved everything. Icecream is still one of my favorite therapists and I remembered Ollie's has a pretty sick selection including some flavors like Candy Floss which I don't see around a lot. I hear a lot that their service is quite bad.. mostly surly part-timing teenagers who'd rather be texting their friends than serving icecream. The day I went there was a girl who seemed exactly like the specimen I just described but the young man serving me was very nice and reminded me a lot of Jeremy Freedman from The Simpsons. I got a grilled cheese sandwich and a banana split which I realllllly underestimated. The grilled cheese was nothing to go wild over but it's a grilled cheese.. cheese and bread.. and that's exactly what I got. For my banana split you get a choice of three flavors as well as piles of whipped cream, variety of sauces and sprinkles. Yay! But around a third of the way in I started to get the icecream-bloat and with no one willing to help me I had to finish that sucker off on my own. For the average person it's probably better to share unless you've been wandering through the forest for the last ten years and it's the first thing you're eating since your return to civilization. Ollie's is a classic hang out spot in Suburban Central Auckland. This used to be a buzzing hotspot but has slowly declined with various other ice cream shops and frozen yoghurt stores opening up all over Auckland. The ice cream itself was not too spectacular for me, but they do have a selection of other desserts and sundaes which I might try sometime. A Royal Oak institution for decades, Ollie's has stood proudly in red and white, offering up gigantic ice creams and satisfying milkshakes to children and the childlike. When a massive hankering for ice cream overcome my friends and I recently, we all headed along there and built three scoop ice creams from the traditional Kiwi flavours on offer. I absolutely had to get Goody Goody Gumdrops and Gold Rush... Gold Rush! There's an ice cream that I haven't had in ages. Just been to Ollies (23 Dec, 7pm) So disappointed in the lack of service, lack of cleanliness and attitude of the staff there this evening. The staff seemed more interested in chatting to each other and chopping and changing the music being blasted through the premises. Tables were in dire need of being cleared and wiped down. No it wasn't busy - only 4 people in the place. Perhaps there should be a manager on the premises or some serious staff training undertaken. read more
