Ollie's Burgers and Ice Cream has become a bit of a legend in Auckland. Having opened in the 1970s, Ollie's has earned its reputation as one of the best ice-cream parlours around. With flavours like caramel fudge, butterscotch pecan, Jamaican lime, licorice allsorts and raspberry and lemonade fizz on hand, the selection is unbeatable and there is something to suit every member of the family. As if choosing an ice cream flavour wasn't hard enough, Ollie's patrons are then faced with deciding between regular or waffle cones, milkshakes or thickshakes, sundaes or banana splits. My last trip to Ollie's I was overwhelmed by all the options and ended up settling on a two scoop sundae, complete with caramel sauce, cream, nuts, wafer and glace cherry. Needless to say it was incredible - too incredible in fact. Despite being way too full and actually feeling quite sick, I proceeded to east the entire sundae. A word of warning - unless you are absolutely craving a massive sugar hit, beware of the sundaes! Ollie's also offers a great selection of takeaway-type food; burgers, toasted sandwiches, nuggets, hotdogs, chips and fritters - you don't just have to stick to their ice cream range. The one issue I have with Ollie's is the decor. I know it has been around for forty years and is trying to maintain their 1970s atmosphere, but a wee facelift wouldn't hurt. Otherwise, I have no qualms with the place and happily recommend it to anyone after some delicious dessert!

Went to Ollie's for some classic milkshakes on a date night and they didn't disappoint! A huge menu full of classic flavours mixed in with the new (birthday cake was the flavour of the week). Unfortunately the tables were all dirty and the seating was a bit odd, kind of like sitting at a kiddy table. But all in all, a cute place for a shake! The bf says: décor is swell, bring your best gal.

Ollies is my favourite ice cream shop in Auckland. There is nothing fancy about it. I have grown up with Ollies living around the corner and I have never been disappointed. The majority of the ice cream served is Tip Top, but no one expects anything more from a shop that has been around for years with the same one owner. Tucked in Royal Oak, Ollies also serves burgers and fries etc but everyone comes for the huge scoops of ice cream and the hot fudge sauce. If you think you can contain the messiness of ice cream on a cone I recommend ordering your ice cream dipped in choc. If you are a ice cream lover, you can go as far as a getting a three scoop sundae with hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. They have roughly 20 flavours to choose from. My favourite flavour which you can't buy in stores is Pineapple Choc Chunk - pineapple lump flavour is a must try!! Other alternatives are milkshake and thick shakes with any flavour ice cream. If your an ice cream lover, you can't get anymore kiwi authentic then ollies. Being vegan I do not eat either cookies or gelato and at this point you may be wondering why I am reviewing this place, well D Lugano make dairy free sorbet and it is fabulous. I love their award winning passion fruit sorbet, very refreshing and not too sweet either and their berry sorbet. D Lugano make possibly one of the best smoothies in town, dairy free fruit and sorbet combinations that are super yum. D Lugano make by hand all their own sorbet and gelato too. There are many gelato flavours, all are low fat which would be needed to compensate for the high fat cookies.

Slap on top of that the wafting smell of Mrs. Higgin's Cookies and you have a human flytrap. I'm glad Lugano's has partnered up with Mrs. Higgins as separately, the staff of both businesses look so depressed in their jobs, despondently watch foot traffic. Now this lively corner store has chirpy and efficient staff. Grab a mango sorbet after an afternoon of waiting outside the changing rooms for your partner and a fat free gelato for her so she can fit in those jeans she agonized over. No cookies for her. You can have a cookie though. You are a man and men thrive on cookies and meat. Just don't tell the boys you had a sorbet.

A large open space, you are first confronted with the cabinets where rows of beautiful cakes, tarts and cheesecakes are displayed. They also have on the other side of the store, nougat, fudge, chocolates and French pastries and if that wasn't enough the other side of the store has fridges filled with hand made ice creams and sorbets. The sorbet is divine and they change the flavours often depending on what fruits are available during the season Everything is baked fresh daily using Artisan techniques and only the finest ingredients, so if you wanted to impress at a dinner party this would be a fantastic place to come.

They do this chocolate mousse cake which Ben told me was the best he'd ever had. That's two best I've ever had's which says a lot. The prices aren't actually too bad either, considering the desserts are very, very good and most place that good charge through the roof. I mean it's not cheap, but it's not a rip off. They also do smaller things that one person can manage - ice-creams and sorbets and tarts and fudge etc, so definitely stop by (the opening hours are limited) even if you aren't looking to order a cake.
