Wow! Run, don't walk to get some amazing treats at Burek & Cake! I got a mix of desserts and they were all phenomenal. The women in the shop were very kind and helped pick out some great stuff! I wasn't able to get the baklava cheesecake but I will definitely be back to grab a piece.
I've known about Burek and Cake for several months now, but only tried them out for the first time last month ahead of a snow storm. The cafe is located in Avondale, tucked into a neighborhood behind NKC Hospital and the Cerner campus off of Armour Rd. I bought a bunch of their cakes for half price since they were closing early due to the weather. Every cake was delicious! My family nibbled on them for a week and they were just as tasty on day five as on day one. I want to return to try more of their Bosnian delicacies, and I will definitely be back for more cake! My favorites were a sugar/honey soaked flat cake that tasted like it may have been made with almond meal, and a meringue-topped cream cake. This was a huge surprise to me because I've always hated meringue! I don't like pavlova or macarons, but I loved this cake. They had another coated in coconut that looked like an Australian lamination that was good. I was able to pick up several different gluten-free cakes for my sister who has celiac, so that was another unexpected surprise. Definitely try the out if you're in the NKC area.
What a hidden gem of a sweet place! My hubby surprised me by stopping here when we were running errands because he knows how much I love baked goods and desserts. I kind of got more than I should have, but I couldn't stop myself. Everything in the bakery cases looked amazing. I wish we hadn't just eaten lunch so I could have chosen a savory item. Next time, I'm eating lunch here! I loved the lady finger like cake soaked in sweetness with coconut sprinkled on top. It was the best. But then the pavlova roll was incredible. I've already decided that for my birthday cake this year, I want pavlova from here. Also, the baklava cheesecake was scrumptious. You can't go wrong selecting anything here. All of the items were made from scratch. They were sweet, but not overly so. That's what I loved most about everything I ate. I didn't get a gut ache from the sugar. It was very well balanced. Go here and support this hard working baker! Her food is amazing. And I have to say it is very, very affordable especially for the high quality! I'll definitely be back.
The Burek is very authentic. Last time I had Burek like this was in Croatia! The Burek comes with either potato, meat, cheese, or cheese and spinach. You can see the staff making fresh Burek right in front of you. It's a small cozy bakery worth a visit!

I had been wanting to check out this place for a while, and when I happened to be nearby just a few days before a good friend's birthday, it seemed like fate. Everyone was friendly and the gal helping me behind the counter was great. I got a little of everything for my friend, and some baklava for me. I got both a traditional baklava and a coconut one. Definitely some of the best baklava I've had in a LONG time. Very flavorful, delicate and crunchy while oozing honey, and not dry at all. The biggest surprise was the coconut baklava- I think it's hands down my new favorite!
According to my Yelp desk calendar; today 10/14/23 is National Dessert Day, so I checked my Bookmarks and headed over to Burek and Cake, a Bosnian Bakery that has been on my to do list for a few months. Burek and Cake is in a tiny building in a remote section of Kansas City North a few blocks from the small village of Avondale; definitely out of way and secluded. My wait behind 3 customers was considerable because each person was asking questions of the multiple products and raking up sizable orders. The most annoying thing was a customer walking away with all 8 hot Bureks in the display case. When my time came, I ordered 7 different sweets for a $13 tab. I was told that more Bureks would be out of the oven in 8 minutes, so I took some time to shop at the European grocery store next door. When I returned the cheese filled Bureks were coming out of the oven. I devoured it as soon as I returned to my vehicle - a crisp yet flaky texture - pretzel like, yet not doughy. Wonderful. I'd love to return and try the meat filled ones. The sweet pastries I have been sampling throughout the day have all been excellent. With the Cheesecake Baklava and the Hermasice being the standouts. The Bosnian owner/chef is very kind and the counter lady was very helpful. The Burek was $5 and sweets were $1 - $4 each. Very eager for a return.

Bought an ice maker on facebook marketplace and the pickup location was this Bosnian bakery I had never heard of. Highly recommend! kind workers walked me through the options and everything was great! soda wasn't for me but I'm glad I tried it lol. read more

I have been here twice and stocked UP both times. Their pastries and cakes are super affordable, and the staff will kindly explain what items are if you are bot familiar. (Luckily the second time I went, there were more labels!) It's a teeny tiny operation across from a park, so the perfect opportunity to go on a nice walk and end with some baklava. The baklava cheesecake is so good I have written about it. The staff is so cute and kind. Cannot recommend this little spot enough! read more

This little bakery is so wonderful. The different flavors of tiramisu were amazing. I loved the cheesecake baklava. If you're close by when she's open for sure stop in! read more

What a cute little gem of a place! Super nice, clean place, best for pickup only. Bureks are perfectly baked, super thin dough, and so very delicious. We tried burek with meat, cheese and the maslenica (butter and little bit of cheese). We enjoyed them all. Very comparable to what you would get in Bosnia. The cakes are amazing. Flavorful yet not very sweet! We really enjoyed the Rafaelo cake, pistachio baklava, princess krofne! It was all so very delicious! The owner was the kindest person, very helpful in our decision making process. Highly recommend!!!! read more

Discovered this hidden gem on Google. On entering, you are immediately met with a beautiful assortment of cake slices and cookies. There is also meat burek and cheese burek if you prefer your comfort food to be savory. Items are priced so you don't have to choose and rotate day to day. The owner is super kind and takes pride in her products! Follow on Facebook to know which sweets are being sold each day. We especially love the honey cake and also must have the burek. read more
