How often should my 10 and 8 year old see the dentist?

That's a great question! We follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's (AAPD) recommendation of every 6 months. We will examine, clean, and place fluoride at each appointment to ensure that your children's teeth are healthy and cavity… Read more

After researching extensively for a pediatric dentist (I personally see Dr Nunnally Freeman and…read moreOwens in marble falls, they are world renowned and see patients from 61 countries and performed dental surgery on me and were absolutely fantastic but don't see kids) My daughter had an abscessed baby molar. My husband took her to a first appmt, she was put on antibiotics by her pediatrician, and he felt comfortable with the sedation practices (conscious oral sedation) as opposed to anesthesia recommended by Georgetown pediatric dentistry (don't go there either). We had a very difficult miscarriage that took 3 weeks to go into labor for in June. Our appmt to extract my daughters infected teeth was in June. The day before or day of (can't remember) our appmt we get an automated text saying our appmt has been canceled. Mind you, all other dentists are thoroughly booked out and I've done my research and haven't found another dentist within fifty min of us that seems halfway decent. So I call. They tell me it's their policy to cancel without a confirmation. They say they sent a text (in my grieving I scanned the automated text and didn't see anywhere in the long paragraph where it said to confirm (no giant C or anything). I said no I didn't see a text saying to confirm. then they said we called. I had no missed calls or voicemails on my phone. I said why didn't you text or call my husband as he's the one who made her the appmt and they said they did. Again, no texts or calls to my husbands phone. He always answers calls. And since he's the one who brought her to the appmt and signed all the paperwork logically they should have called him. They said my voicemail box was full. So why wouldn't they call him? So literally the weak my baby had died inside of me my other baby has an abscessed tooth and nowhere to get it removed safely at. So my husband and I scrounge and go to THREE diff first patient appmts at diff dentists before we find one who will do conscious sedation with a parent in the room ( Dr Jen Smiles in cedar park) and she fit us in to get the tooth out asap. If you don't know, am abscessed tooth with a can go septic and be life threatening. There was no empathy expressed to us about the loss of our baby, no attempts to rectify the situation or schedule us to get in asap, and absolutely no responsibility took for not calling my husband. Due to our other kids dental health we decided to forgive the practice and try again with our boys (our daughter was seen at Dr Jenny smiles) so I called to schedule. I humbled myself to do so out of my love for my kids and hope that their five star reviews would mean safe and easy fillings with the tvs and things they provide. The practice texted me today saying they won't see my boys for a new patient appmt due to us getting mad at them on the phone. And yes we were mad. I was bawling and hung up after they were unapologetic. I even spoke to a manager or whoever is in charge when they canceled my daughters appointment and they had zero empathy or concern for my daughters well-being! Do not trust these people with your kids lives. Dental health is health for the entire body. Whatever is done in the mouth affects the whole system. I am in absolute shock that a practice in America could deny service and the way they handle canceling appmts (not for a cleaning, not for a filling, but an ABSCESSED TOOTH) is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. I am thankful they didn't let me schedule my boys because they showed their true colors not once but twice. Justice be served at this place.

He still screamed but the dentist and assistant were fast and efficient. Since it was his first appointment, they just brushed and examined his teeth and went over any concerns. I also appreciated the lack of judgment or inquiry regarding my desire to decline the fluoride treatment. They just said "no problem" and moved on. Scheduling is via phone (I do prefer online but it's okay). They still made the process fairly simple. They also were understanding when I had to initially cancel at the last minute due to my son running a fever. They were really transparent and communicative regarding costs. They contacted me in advance to give me the exact co-pay amount. That's awesome and honestly rare. Everyone is super nice here. Dentist, dental assistant, front desk staff. Friendly and easy to talk to. They even gave me a little pot with daisy seeds because it was Mother's Day weekend. So sweet. There's also a cute play area for kids in front of reception. No issue finding parking close to the front door.

Thank you so much GPD for taking care of me for 15 years

Been taking both kids to Little Smiles since they were in elementary school. Due to not being in network for my insurance, our last appt in January 2024, we were told and shown that our daughter had 5 cavities and the estimate would run around $1500. Dr. Jenny jokingly asked, "Do you drink Starbucks drinks because if so, we tend to see cavities in teens due to sugary drink consumption." I sought a 2nd opinion at my adult dentist knowing the cost to get them addressed would be lower, given they are in network since Little Smiles is not in network for us. To my surprise, x-ray films sent over and evaluated by my adult dentist discovered that my daughter had NO evidence of ANY cavities whatsoever--nor the beginnings of ANY cavities. In shock, I asked if they were certain. A second set of x-rays were taken to confirm and ease my mind. Again, ZERO cavities. Had I not sought their care to reduce cost, my daughter's beautiful adult teeth would have been drilled and modified for no reason. I warn everyone as I too had been warned that dentistry can be notorious for recommending unnecessary treatment to make a profit. My daughter had a friend who experienced something similar from Little Smiles. Unfortunately, this discovery ended my respect and my relationship at Little Smiles Dentistry in Cedar Park. They have a fun office with friendly staff and all but sometimes that can cover up lucrative practices if you as a consumer are not vigilant. I'm fortunate that my circumstances resulted in preventing unnecessary dental work for my daughter's adult teeth. We go twice per year for regular checkups and the next checkups at our adult dentist confirmed--STILL ZERO cavities whatsoever this past January 2025. Both of my daughters have been cavity free their entire lives so far and we hope to keep it that way. My advice, get a 2nd opinion if you have the time especially when it involves your child's permanent teeth.
