I have happily overlooked Bully's for years. The name reminds me of someone I shared a flat with when I was a student. Daz was a grave digger in his home town of Wolverhampton before he decided to go to college. He was a devout anarchist, (even his bank account was simply in the name of Daz), and he was also mad about the Wolves. Back in the day Bully was their key goal scorer by miles, and has probably been canonised by the Wolverhampton Diocese, or what ever they do to make someone a saint!
I will never forget returning home every day to find that the very expensive can of eggshell paint I had bought for painting the bathroom had been put to a more unconventional use. The name Bully had been daubed on every wall of every house up the street!
Do you get my apprehension in visiting this particular establishment? And it's a shame, because Bully's is a lovely place! Expensive though! Definitely the kind of place you'd go when you're feeling flush, and there's a special someone to impress!
I called in recently during the day, and was lucky enough to witness a wine tasting session (featured in the photos). A lot of work obviously goes into getting these things right... and not only that, you need to be educated in order to do just that. I don't know a great deal about wine, but one of my closest friends is a smellier. She tells me that you train for a couple of years, but that you are constantly learning new stuff, because things change all the time.
In a nutshell, Bully's is an up market French restaurant, run by a husband and wife team, Russell and Vicky Bullimore, with a lot of knowledge, flair and fun. I don't agree with some of the options on the menu, foie gras for instance, and would never try the snails, but the food that I have been willing to order has been excellent.
They've added some nice little touched to the place that will make you smile, and you can tel that they have really thought about it all. I recommend it for a special occasion where it would be apt to see off a fair amount of cash on a gastronomic delight. read more
