Dunleavy Drive is in a peculiar part of Cardiff Bay, overlooking other retail estates I can't quite see the appeal of setting out to come here.

Serving up all your favourite Italian fare, this is a restaurant where you'll ind all of your comfort foods: pizza, pasta, cabonara, gnocchi, salads and everything you could hope for. But, because this is an independent place with a more-than-average inventive chef, they also have a selection of other combinations to try. As Sarah mentioned, the portions are pretty sizable; the more the better! This is a very popular spot for local romantics as it the place has a particularly intimate feel to it. Also, in the summer, they have an outdoor area where you can sit and soak up the last of the sun. Unlike many other higher class restaurants in Penarth, the prices here really are reasonable, and you get a whole lot of food, taste and welcome for your money.

The menu offers a good selection of traditional Italian fare and the specials board always has plenty to offer the more adventurous taste buds. the servings are plentiful and you will be pushed to have room to be able to sample some of the rich home-made desserts on offer. My particular favourite is the Fettucini Alfredo which is served in a thick and creamy garlic sauce, topped off with a portion of home-made garlic bread which is literally dripping with garlic.

The menu is quite extensive so if you fancy pasta, a steak, pizza, or fish then you'll find it on the menu here. I had some really good snapper the last time I was there and my other half's steak was juicy and delicious too. Not the cheapest place in the world but value for money. I think our bill for 2 came to about £40 for two mains and 2 drinks and a nice night out.

We were seated quickly in a sheltered outdoor area with fantastic views of Penarth esplanade and the Bristol Channel as the sun set. There's also a sailing club right next door with a number of healthy young men that my friends (not I, never I!) enjoyed watching get out of their wetsuits. The service for drinks and food was exceptionally quick. individual pizzas were made and on the table within 10 minutes of ordering. We were served by various different lovely staff members who all seemed busy, but polite and attentive. The food itself was very good, and the pizza bases were deliciously doughy and filling. My two friends ordered the pizzas, while I was cunning and ordered the soup an magically obtained a slice each of their pizzas too. It was all very lovely, and lip-smackingly good.

The Bay area is well stocked with bars and restaurants, so we had passed a number of other options walking in from the taxi rank, wondering if we had made the right choice. Emerging onto the main waterfront area, we were quickly reassured that the view was going to be worth the cab ride alone, as a milky September sun was setting in an almost cloudless sky. Signor Valentino's is located on the first floor of Mermaid Quay with tables both inside and on a veranda balcony extending around the building, offering a fantastic view over the Bay area. We had booked a table for 7.30, but had decided to chance it for an earlier sitting, arriving just after 6pm. Having checked with the maitre'd, he happily agreed and let me select the perfect table on the elbow of the veranda, with the best possible view of the Bay. As we sat there, drinking in the vista, it wasn't too long before we were presented with menus and a drinks order taken, with two very friendly staff looking after us. The house wine was very drinkable and that sustained us nicely until the main courses arrived - my Tagliatelle Verona was a generous dish stacked with chicken and pepperoni pieces, very tasty and just the right size. The oven baked salmon was also well received, as was the Pollo Nero chicken breast. After that, we just about had room for a three spoon single dessert choice, so we plumped for the profiteroles, which were quite small but quite delicious. The bill (with two bottles of wine) came to just under £30 per person, which was well within expectations. The service throughout was excellent - the waiters came when asked, with no sense of "hurry up" to make room for new arrivals, which was possible given that we were in prime seats. Overall, this was a very good choice for an evening meal - an outstanding location, coupled with great service and good food.

I've only sampled the taste of Italy the few times I've been there because it's hard to go wrong with pizza and pasta and to their credit it's been fantastic. The setting is kind of like an 80s Italian, pseudo flashy but bordering on tacky. During the summer they have a rotund man with a keyboard and mini pa system singing bizarre Italian/Spanish/Welsh hits outside the restaurant, It's almost ridiculous but I love it. It must be a hit with the A crowd because last time I went I saw Rhys Ifans and his entourage ordering a huge amount of champagne for the beautiful hangers on. Sadly though, I was not invited.

We were crammed in, surrounded by couples who looked like they really didn't want to be talking to each other and there were so many red heart shape balloons I was nearly sick. The Welsh/Spanish/Italian menu is interesting and your guaranteed to be torn between at least two dishes. I went for fish and was really happy with what I got. Not the cheapest place to eat in the bay but not ridiculously overpriced either and good for a quality meal. Our waiter was also really fun and helpful.
