I am pleased to make Gourmet Burger Kitchen my first review on my trip to Cardiff, my latest of cities visited, in the capital of Wales this time, and I hope this place sets the tone for the rest of my stay here as it was a relatively good experience I had here. GBK have 53 stores in the United Kingdom, and as I recall they have 3 stores in Cardiff, the capital of Wales alone, this branch is classed as "The Cardiff Library" branch for some reason and is apart of the St David's mall, and is right next to Wangyama and Carluccio's, rival restaurant chains specializing in different cuisine, being asian fusion and Italian respectively. My server here seemed pretty friendly, and got me sat down quite quick, and made sure I had visited GBK before so I knew the essentials such as ordering at the bar and the cool loyalty scheme with there app which gives you free sides, milkshakes and burgers, for visiting, for example every other visit you get an award, if you visit 3 different branches you get a free burger, if you try all 6 milkshakes, you get a free one, so that is pretty cool. This GBK was quite nice, and cool inside however it was smaller than my local branch in Spinningfields in Manchester, it just seemed nicer with a cooler vibe, due to its location and decoration in Cardiff. I decided to order a Gluten Free Cheese and Bacon burger, with Applewood cheese with some skin on chips, using my free loyalty code on this occasion having ranked up two previous visits on my loyalty card at my local Spinningfields store, and of course I tried a milkshake, working my way up there offer were you try them all for a free one. I was served at the bar by Conor, he seemed pretty friendly, and I did ask him for a few recommendations such as the best cheese, and the best milkshake, and what Applewood Cheese like, and decided to order a banana milkshake and the Applewood Cheese based on his reccomendation. As always, the milkshake taken a while to come and taken much longer than my friend's San Maguel, as well as being priced more expensive than his San Miguel at £4.30, however it did taste fresh and it was very nice, and I did also enjoy it, as I did previously with there lime flavor at their Spinningfields branch, although this wasn't my favorite milkshake at GBK, having preferred the Lime, I still was pleased with the drink and enjoyed it. Moving onto my burger, this also was quite nice however it was abit to overfilled to what I expected, even with some sort of habenero jam and relish, which sadly wasn't very nice, it was the typical gluten free bun GBK use from a bakery in the north of England, which was good to see, and my burger was quite nice, minus the lettuce which it was stuffed with, and it just tasted and even felt hard and low quality, and the habenero jam or relish gave it a horrible taste too and worsened the burger sadly, and I had to scrape this off. My chips were average, they were very hot however the portion just seemed a little small, and it definitley wasn't the best chips I have had from a GBK branch, I regret to report. Overall, this place is quite cool and I am pleased that they helped get my Cardiff trip off with a bang, but sadly I can't help but feel this place has only done enough for a solid three star rating in what is actually a landmark for me being my 300th review which awarded three stars, making three only the second rating I have awarded over 300 times to joining two stars in that case, however don't be confused I am giving this branch of GBK a well deserved three. read more

Well this isn't no Macdonalds that's for sure. You can actually see the fresh ingredients that go into the burgers and taste lots of lots of different flavours. I like having the option of choosing whatever ingredients you want in a burger! I have eaten the most amazing burgers in the world in New Zealand so had very high expectations of GBK, sadly though these burgers are never quite as amazing as they sound on paper and I don't feel they justify the price tag. Luckily they have lots of offers and vouchers so everyone can have a try for cheaper. I'm quite happy they sell New Zealand beer too to wash down my burger, while my boyfriend is a massive fan of the Oreo milkshakes! I like this restaurant more than the Cardiff Bay one, its bigger and feels less plastic and clinical. I say give it ago, just maybe don't expect the best burger of your life. read more

I'm not a big fan of burgers, mainly because I don't eat beef and that makes the choice somewhat limited - but Gourmet Burger Kitchen has plenty on offer besides beef, including chicken and vegetarian options, and the 'gourmet' in their title is pretty much justified. First off, the burgers from GBK are HUGE. The ingredients used are fresh and high quality, and everything is well presented. No soggy lettuce and cold chips here, then. On my last visit, as usual, I went for the goats' cheese burger with relish, and as usual when it arrived it was a towering stack of gourmet burger-ness. Delicious, stuffed with fresh salad and tasty relish, and very filling (I couldn't finish it). The chips and blue cheese dip are great, too. I keep saying I'll try a different burger next time, but I still end up going for the goats' cheese every time. This branch of GBK always seems to be busy yet clean, and the staff have always been friendly and efficient when I've eaten there - so I'd definitely recommend it. read more

If want a proper burger made with real ingredients then it worth a visit here. They have in excess of 20 different burgers to choose from all of which I guarantee you will struggle to finish if you've order chips as well. Prize wise if you compared it to MacDonalds then you may think it is extortionate but it is a different meal altogether and so it is no way comparable. The chips are big chunky ones and if there is 2 of you, you will only need to order 1 portion if you're both ordering a burger as the burgers are so big. In fact come to think of it - it isn't that expensive - its around £7 for a burger and £4 for chips plus drinks at around £6 and it comes out at around £25. Remember this is a restaurant not a fast food place. But if you're smart you will go along with one of their money off vouchers from their website, and these promotions are not infrequent, knocking around 40% off the bill. Altogether I think it a great, tasty filling meal in a nice atmosphere with happy service and its also a great restaurant ot people watch at. read more

On the minus side, - Fishy smell permeated the place on arrival. - Multiple dead/live large bluebottle flies around the window (hadn't been cleaned for some time). - Burger is distinctly mediocre. Bun not toasted, limp. - Disinterested management - avoids customer issues - Management is dressed like the job has interrupted their beach holiday. - Lack of communication between staff - kitchen staff left our food on the pass, didn't bother to notify the wait staff. Even the most non-descript diner in Nowheresville, New Mexico USA says "order up!" for a reason. - Wait staff shouldn't handle the food on the pass. - No onion rings available, so there are some logistics issues. When I first walked past Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) I was wowed by the choice of burgers they had listed on the menu. They offer you everything from your standard beef and chicken to buffalo and minted lamb. There was no way on earth I was going to sample the buffalo but there was so many others to choose from I decided to give it a try. I ordered the cranberry and camembert chicken burger with a side order of chips. For those of you reading this and thinking "Wow thats original" hold on for a second whilst I describe what appeared from the kitchen. The burger itself was more like a tower. To start at the bottom and work my way up it had a bun base, freshly cooked chicken breast, camembert, cranberry sauce, salad, mayo topped with more relish capped off with the other half of the bun. I kid you not this burger was so big it had to be held together with a scewer to prevent it from toppling over! A really good restaurant to try when you have a hole to fill. Take a tip from me if you go with a friend order one portion of chips between you as I find the burgers are so filling I never manage to make a dent on the chipperoonies!. read more

YUM buuuuuuurgers. I like burgers, does anybody not like burgers? Well burgers of course fellow yelpers is what you are to expect of the Gourmet Burger Kitchen - I think the clue was in the title. You know you're going to get a decent burger here that is kitchen made and many a different burger you can get. You do have to order your chips as an extra, they aren't included which can make this place a little pricey. They do every now and again have special deals here which can be pretty good, I believe the last time I ate here it was 2 meals for £12 which included burgers and chips. I thoroughly enjoyed my thick burger with avocado, the chips were chunky and delicious, to say I was stuffed is an understatement. The atmosphere is pretty standard, there is nothing super special about the design here and the tables could be a little further apart. This restaurant is situated in the central Hayes area and perfect to stop by after an exhausting shopping trip or good for an evening out. read more

Although I am a veggie and the name has nothing to do with my option of eating, I really did enjoy this restaurant! From the light decoration, to the friendliness of staff, even the way of ordering is quite nice. Found it fresh and unique in Cardiff. It is as if a Café and a Restaurant came together in a package. As I said before they cater for veggies alike, they have at least 3 veggie options on the menu and all of thei hamburguers look amazing! American styled but not American in the plastic essence of it! It is a medium to large restaurant, they have a varied menu and a good selection of beers/lagers. I would say that this is a more lunch directed one! I reccomend this restaurant! I will go there again! And if you do go there, do not forget to try the Oreo milkshake! It was delicious! read more

Amazing vegetarian options and innovative menu items! If you're staying at the Cardiff Marriott, it is a two-minute walk at the most. The staff is very friendly, particularly to tourists. I recommend the Johnny Be Goat and the Elderflower Fresh and Fizzy. read more

After wandering past this branch for months I finally went there today with my fiance. The menu looks great and they have a wide variety of burgers. At around £7.00 ish I thought it was pretty decent until I was informed by the waiter that you have to order chips separately to your burger. The restaurant was empty apart from about three other couples and now I know why. We ordered: Mexican burger @ £8.15 Cheese burger @ £7.35 x 2 portions of chips @ £3.00 each x 2 cokes @ £2.05 each All in all a meal that consisted of basically burger, fries and cokes came to a whopping £25. I was actually taken aback when the server rang it through the till. When the food came I was astonished to find that the burgers were huge. Mine was too big for me to hold so I tried cutting it in half but then all of the filling spilled out onto my plate so I ended up eating a burger with my knife and fork. I hadn't anticipated that the filling in my burger would be cold. The burger was nice and hot but the fillings were stone cold, I'm guessing that's how it's meant to be. The burger was chewy too. Not great really. The attitude of the server behind the counter also left a lot to be desired after an outburst about a charity lady that had come into the restaurant: "...I'm even harrased by them at work, Jesus Christ!!" Not what I want to hear. Keep those opinions to the staff room please. I found it odd that in a place where the food is so expensive you are exptected to order at the bar and the only waitress service is when they bring you your food. Eating with my family is generally a pretty stressful event. My brother will only ever eat pizza or a burger, while my mum scorns all takeaway restaurants, and all I want is to be fed as soon as possible. Two thirds of us are always disappointed. This time, however, was slightly different: this time we were all disappointed. My mum and brother hadn't visited me in Cardiff since St Davids 2 opened with all its new restaurants, and I was pretty confident that we were going to find something that suited all of us. We decided on GBK because it had burgers (happy brother), it wasn't McDonald's (happy mother) and we were right around the corner (I get to eat now!) The menu seemed pretty impressive too, with a wide range of interesting looking options. After great deliberation, we each selected our burgers and waited to be blown away. The lady on the till looked like she wouldn't know how to smile if she won the lottery. So that was a poor start; I do not like being made to feel like my custom is an annoyance. We were given our drinks pretty quickly, and at first glance our milkshakes seemed very impressive. You get almost three glasses worth and it tasted pretty good too. But do not be fooled! The first glass tastes pretty good. By the second glass you realise that they haven't been mixed properly, and all you're left with melted vanilla ice-cream. The burgers took longer to come. Now, I've been told time and time again to be patient in restaurants: you don't want your food to be out in 5 minutes because that probably means it hasn't been freshly prepared and cooked just for you. That's fine for something fancy, but this was a burger. Hardly the most complicated of foods to prepare. Getting a little grumpy, I started watching the kitchen, hoping that I could will food to come faster. Then I realised, that it wasn't that it was taking a long time to make, it was that the waiting staff (consisting of 2 people) weren't delivering it to the table. They were mixing drinks and delivering those, but leaving the food orders to go cold on the side. By the time our burgers finally came, I was excited to finally be able to eat what I thought was going to be an amazing burger. I was promised a "gourmet burger" and I expected one. Alas, it was not to be. The burger definitely stood at a good height (almost too high to eat comfortably) but really not that big, generally speaking. Imagine 2 child's fish cakes on top of each other. And the taste wasn't too great either. We all ordered something different, and not one of us was happy. And don't expect chips with this burger, despite what you're paying for it. No, you have to pay for them separately. Which is fine; not everyone wants chips. But £3 for a tiny bowl is just ridiculous. We ordered a large one to share, and when they finally came 15 minutes after the burgers (despite asking for them twice, being able to see them on the counter and being told that I couldn't just have them right then, I had to wait for someone to bring them over) we were rationed to about 5 chips each. All in all, it wasn't worth the money, or the wait, or the poor service. My advice: if you're in town and you want to grab a burger for lunch - go to McDonalds. If you're too posh for McDonalds, find a Wetherspoons. They may be safe options, but at least you wont be disappointed. read more

Not great at all. Fairly decent burger, but very overpriced for what it was. Beers are horrendously expensive - £5 for a 500ml bottle of beer. Added to our general sense of dissatisfaction was the attitude of the serving staff - one lad who seemed more concerned with swaggering around moodily than serving, and two other staff who started clearing away our plates before we had even finished! Needless to say, no tip was deserved, none was given. We left feeling dissatisfied and quite comprehensively ripped off. Now crossed off our list of eateries in Cardiff. read more
