This is a fairly remote 400-year-old barn that's been turned into a restaurant. I went there as part of a private function- it's a brilliant place to hold something like a wedding reception (unless your guest list is too big). The staff are friendly and there's a warm atmosphere. The menu is mostly very traditional, straightforward dishes excellently cooked, but sometimes includes exotic meats like bison and kangaroo for something a bit different. You can see the current menu on their website. If you're heading here, make sure you read the directions on the website first- your sat nav, if you've got one, won't find the restaurant, the written instructions are better. Sometimes there's a two-seater plane parked outside the barn, one landmark you might be able to navigate by.

We had a nice meal although we were'nt asked how we wanted our meat cooked and it turned up very very well done! We also waited 40 minutes to order dessert, despite asking the waiting staff 3 times. Eventually we left without dessert. We didnt end up paying the £200 party deposit as before doing this we wanted assurances from the restaurant manager that all would be well and we wouldnt encounter the same problems during our party. I called twice and didnt get a call back. Finally on the 3rd call i managed to speak to the owner. Oh dear, how unpleasant she was. She told me they have the meat delivered cooked medium (and vacuum packed) so there shouldnt have been a problem. The wait for dessert was just one of those things and I should have spoken up more??? unfortuantley her attitude was well if you want to cancel thats fine! Sadly all seems to be fine at the Farmers Daughter just as long as you dont' complain.... a very unpleasant lady is far from interested and told me she was offended by my comments. Needless to say our party will take place somewhere else!

The service is first class and the staff are extremely polite and freindly and absolutely nothing is too much trouble for them. I have eaten there on many occasions and have never had a complaint about the food. The have a wide variety on the menu and it is always cooked wonderfully with very good portions. I especially love the Sunday lunch and is great for those with a big appetite! The prices are great and the meals are excellent value for money. They often have live entertainment, there is a pool table and great outdoor eating/playing area. Wide screen TV. They have a big car park. They also have a function room to hire and I believe they do not charge for this hire but you would need to confirm that. All in all I would recommend the Port 'O' Call.

A gastropub…read morerising from the ashes of an old-fashioned local, it has been refurbished and reopened by a partnership of experienced pub managers and restaurant owners. It requires a 2-mile detour off the A48 between St Mellons and Cardiff. The menu offers a fair choice, ranging from bacon butties for breakfast (perhaps with golfers in mind), through to more substantial dishes later in the day, including pan-fried venison steak with red wine, mussels in tomato and herb sauce, fish and vegetable pie, roast duck breast with orange sauce, and bread and butter pudding with custard. £40 for 2. There is a good choice of real ales, which included HB and Speckled Hen on my last visit, a picturesque pub garden with outside tables, widescreen tv which implied the availability of sports events while you eat and drink, and its split-level layout features an upper gallery where you can sit down and survey those below.

From the outside of The Cottage to its interior, I was expecting so much more…read more But maybe that's not fair. For one thing, I stopped here for a late breakfast, but upon seeing the Traditional English breakfast of the people sitting next to me, I had lunch instead. The Traditional Breakfast, truly is that, fried eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans from a can, pre-fab formed hashbrown patties, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms and toast with butter. This dish included black pudding, yet another protein, something which I tried elsewhere. The meal seemed to be very similar to what was served throughout Wales and the areas of England I had gone to while in there. It's not the type of food I'm used to, and for this experience I may have been feeling a bit battle weary in my almost two-week search for something much healthier. But even the safe meal I opted for was so-so. A tuna sandwich. The bread was soggy. This place calls itself a tea room, first, then a restaurant. And that may be where this place excels. But I don't know, because I didn't come here for afternoon tea. I did have a pot of traditional tea with cream on the side. It was as good as every other place I went to. I have a feeling this place has pretty good desserts to go with the tea they serve. But it's for someone else to discover and write about. The restaurant food here is very typical of traditional English food. If you're into that, go for it. If not, move on, and quickly.

Ridgeway Bar And Kitchen - Some Pimms

Should you ever find yourself in Newport, Wales - and there's absolutely no reason to think you…read moreshould unless you live there or are lost - then you will find a lunchtime trip to Ridgeway Bar and Kitchen a wholly satisfying affair. We stopped here on the way from London to Pembrokeshire. It's half way and it was lunchtime and call us mad but we weren't fancying the Little Chef. A quick look online had some bizarre suggestions for good places to eat just off the M4 including a Mcdonalds and a service station where you could buy sandwiches. We needed to dig deeper. Eventually we found a write up for a small place in the Newport suburbs which didn't sound grim. The write up did it a disservice. It's an excellent place. Nestled on a residential road with bungalows and rhodedendrums everywhere, you wonder how anyone but a local would ever know about this place. Perhaps that's all they need because the place full when we got there. It's a bar/restaurant which has been done out in a sort of American pantry style, lots of whitewashed wood, all bright and airy. The menu is full of good classics, calamari, smoked mackerel pate, ham hock etc, and there's a grill section with burgers and steaks. If you ordered two courses in the right combination you could get a lunchtime deal of £12. Cue finding the most expensive things available on that deal. I had hanger steak, the missus had a fish medley and Stanley had the usual. It's fair to say my steak was nothing short of excellent. Full of flavour as that cut always is, but with the added charcoal grill charred criss cross. Very satisfying. Crispy fluffy chips accompanied and so did a juicy field mushroom and tasty grilled tomato. I chose a bernaise sauce which was unctuous and tasty, with the nice sharp vinegar reduction. The only bit of nit picking was that it wasn't quite warm enough. Didn't stop me mopping up the lot. A simple dish executed to perfection. The fish plate was a similar story. Small chunks of battered cod done perfectly, some very tasty calamari, a trout pate and some good bread to spread it on. Great stuff. Stanley's hamburger was juicy and tasty and the bun had a good glaze but was satisfyingly doughy. Buoyed by the superb mains and encouraged by the lunchtime deal we ordered a brownie and an apple crumble. Both were stupidly tasty and moreish which was lucky because the portions were generous in the extreme. It occurred to us that the people here are concentrating on keeping the food simple but executing it perfectly. Nothing is worse than a simple dish done badly. Nothing better than a simple dish made with love and care. The service was wonderfully friendly, two bright and breezy sisters who were happy to stop and chat even though the place was packed. Newport may not be the most buzzy of places but the locals are lucky to have the Ridgeway Bar and Kitchen, as good a lunchtime stop off as anywhere 150 miles east up the M4. We'll be stopping here on the way back.

From the first day I introduced my friends to this place the staff have made my friends feel very welcome and now they're obsessed with coming here! It always feels great to be the one to introduce a place your friends end up loving. They're also great with recommending drinks. ~ Drinks: I haven't eaten here since my first breakfast, but the drinks are delicious. I especially enjoy the "Spiced Apple Pie" - incredibly yummy. I normally don't go for alcoholic drinks (don't really like the taste) but the ones at Drago Lounge are terrific. --- I gave 3 stars for the food last time but if you don't treat this as a "restaurant" as such, I'm sure that you'll love this place. It's a great place to hang out with an awesome atmosphere. Fantastic spot in Friars Walk!
