UNETHICAL REFUSAL TO HELP. I called their ER last night to confirm they were open. I found a wounded rabbit in my yard wanted to bring in, because in all likelihood it needed to be euthanized. When I lived in North Andover I would occasionally do this with wounded animals. They were always gracious. NOT ANYMORE! They refused to take the animal. How unethical. Their refusal basically said we don't care if the animal is suffering, or that you want to help the animal and are asking for help from veterinary professionals (?), but take it somewhere else. I am a physician and my sister is a veterinary surgeon. We have a profound respect for living beings and SHOULD NOT EVER REFUSE TO HELP A WOUNDED ANIMAL IN PAIN. How can you call yourselves a "veterinary emergency room" when you turn away animals?? Let me guess, the economics of it were not favorable. You should be ashamed of yourselves. read more

my wife I brought our cat for ultrasound on June 4. They determined that she has pancreatitis, they recommended leave the cat for 48 hours pay 6000$ for this. We left the, after we've gotten our cat on 6/6 the cat infected nostrils because they fed her through the nose, nostrils were inflamed the stitches were on her face, the cat was sicker than before we complained about negligence no response. We brought our elderly cat into Bulger last week. After a quick intake, the staff immediately took him out back, assessed him and determined that unfortunately, he was at the end of his life. The care, compassion and patience shown to us that night were extraordinary. They made an absolutely heartbreaking experience a little softer with their care. In addition, since his passing, I have been so impressed with the aftercare; an email to check in and offer support group options and reaching out to his veterinarian to let them know the news. I have a major bone to pick with Bulger. I have had three sick cats over the past year. When I brought them in to Bulger, scared and exhausted at 10:00 at night, all three times they literally said, "Well, she's 13 (one cat was 14), and you had a long run with her. She's had a good life. We suggest euthanasia." I kid you not. Three cats. One had a clot or a seizure, they never told us which and never did blood tests before telling us that we should euth. They wanted to "save us money" after charging $2,000 for a brief physical exam and the suggestion for euth. The second cat had an infection in her bile duct which we only found out after I syringe fed her over three days because the Friday night on a holiday weekend they told me, she had a fever and was 13 and we should just put her down. A FEVER! No antibiotics, no fluids, no support. Another $1500. Don't bother responding, Bulger. I'm done. read more

We brought our dog to Bulger Veterinary Hospital after our usual Vet was unable to perform the services we needed. Our dog, Jake, stopped being able to urinate and needed immediate attention. We saw Dr. Burdsall and we can't say enough wonderful things about this amazing guy. He treated us and Jake with compassion, explaining everything in depth so we could have all the necessary information we needed to make very difficult decisions. I wish the circumstances we had met Dr. Burdsall were different but I'm glad we were able to meet such an amazing and compassionate human. This Vet Hospital should be super grateful to have this wonderful human on staff. I genuinely don't know how this place has any bad reviews unless they were from a long time ago... I've had my dog for 11 years and have had several vets (since I live in LA) I came here with my dog as I was visiting the east coast, and I'm so incredibly glad and lucky that I got paired with Dr. Whitney York. She is truly the best vet I've ever had. She is so patient, so kind and loving, warm with my baby, gives me all the information but also walks me through all my worst case anxiety thoughts. Trust me when I say I'm the most annoying dog owner who has severe anxiety and constantly bringing my dog to the vet for the tiniest thing. She was a god send. I genuinely wish she lived in LA so I could see her whenever I wanted. Honestly the entire hospital was incredible. The exams and ultrasounds/radiology was so thorough and caught things that no other docs have. The front desk was so friendly, they were really timely with getting me seen, and even another doctor I saw briefly, I believe his name was Tim was also such a gem in helping me feel better in an emergency but also being informative. 10/10! read more

The very best emergency veterinary hospital around. These special people quite literally saved our 2lb puppies life after he was accidentally stepped on. We were completely devastated and so worried. The care and compassion they offered was second to none. Not only did they provide the specialty treatment our puppy needed to survive, they took care of us too. They provided a clear and transparent treatment plan and executed it flawlessly. It was pricey but most emergency vets are. Totally worth every penny and then some! If we could give zero stars, we absolutely would. I would not even consider this a medical facility. It's more of a joke. Brought our five year-old Shar Pei in for a surgery consult As he was diagnosed with the mast cell tumor two weeks prior. They ended up talking us into $3000 worth of testing which we were told would only be 300$. When the results of the most important test came back , they were emailed to us via forwarded email that they had addressed to our vets office. How lazy or inconsiderate can you be to not even change or have the decency to change the name of whom the email is going to , especially given the nature of the situation . We were told we would receive a call from someone to go over the results with us and no one ever did. We were left to decipher through all of the medical terms and testing results , pages of them on our own. Fast forward this was probably due to the fact that they had taken The wrong tissue to be sent out for pathology testing, and they tried to cover it up . We were told they would aspirate both the dogs back leg lymph node as well as the stomach lymph node and they had the best of the best On staff as this could be difficult. It wasn't until another animal hospital Read the test results They took fat tissue instead of lymph node tissue to be sent off to the lab intern to see if the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes. When I called and I spoke with one of the surgeons for an explanation as to why no one called me to go over the results she claimed that the testing came back inconclusive Never telling us they drew the wrong tissue. When I explained I would like for them To retest as they had charged us a great deal her response" How far away do you live? I'm not waiting hours on and for you my day is done." We were appalled by this response and said we would call back. We then took him to another Animal hospital to repay to have the same test run and run correctly. The vet expressed to us that Bulgar Should have checked to be sure by looking under the microscope that they had indeed collected lymph node tissue. Bulgar was negligent in doing this as well. Bulger charged us $375 for this particular test. The other animal hospitals charge was $170. Bulgar is not only ripping people off, but they also have no working knowledge of what they are doing when handling and caring for a pets. They also unnecessary put the dog under for another hefty charge when the other animal hospital simply had us hold the dog for testing . With more charges for expedited results , when the second animal hospital got us put test results back faster for additional charges . I called and spoke to the supervisor Emma who was extremely Dismissive with both myself and my husband, as we just tried to explain it was just the approach they took, and if they were honest that they had extracted the wrong tissue and just offered to re-do testing for no additional charge, we would've been happy with that.. She expressed they usually would do that, but it was our fault for not scheduling that night to have it redone, which at that point they didn't do it right the first time we were uncomfortable even going back to have them make a second attempt. She then said that they would be willing to pay for the cost of the second testing. We had done at the alternative animal hospital, and then she backtracked and said her and the team decided to not go forward with Reimbursing for the charges. We then spoke to the medical director who was also rude and dismissive and blamed us for not coming back When we found out, they had done the testing wrong. Both the supervisor Emma and the medical director Chris Negllian Are too unprofessional combative Individuals Who clearly are just miserable with their jobs and nasty cold individuals who could care less about anything but the money . Not to mention how filthy rotten dirty the facility is, and the fact that one of the staff members had their child bundled up in a winter coat Sleeping on the bench in one of the exam rooms with the door closed ( looking like they didn't have child care and had to take them to work ) . We could see her through the glass window as we were leaving. Also sat In what appeared to be a wet blood patch when we were taken into the exam room with our dog . I did bring this to the staff 's attention and they was also dismissed . This place is despicable please take your animals elsewhere They can't advocate for themselves. We did contact the Lawrence board of health and have filed A civil claim against them in court somebody has to hold these people accountable for scamming vulnerable During the pets' time of need. read more

They me $40 to cut her nails then I my other dog needs to be spayed and they're going to charge me $1500 to do that so I'm wondering how much I'm getting porked? I'm writing this review because I don't want other people to end up in the position I was in. This hospital charges more than most by a large margin and also demands payment in full up front before they even start treating your pet. And they will go with the highest estimate and opt to refund you later. I brought my cat in for an emergency visit and he urgently needed to be catheterized to treat a urinary blockage and prevent his bladder from rupturing. They would not do this until we paid roughly $5,400 up front. We offered to pay $1000 immediately just to get the procedure started while we figured out transferring money to pay for the rest but they insisted on the full amount. Fortunately it only took a few minutes to figure it out, but I hate to imagine people who don't have that kind of money as readily available (which is frankly most people because who has that just lying around?) coming in with their pet in critical condition and being presented with the ultimatum of 'pay or let your pet die to something that's incredibly treatable'. You don't really have time to shop around for another vet in an emergency, so those are going to very often be your only options. This hospital is owned by Ethos which is in turn owned by JAB, a German conglomerate. Regardless of how much individual vets there might care about the animals they aren't the ones setting the policies, and this foreign investment company definitely does not care about your animals. They care about money. For the record, my cat only needed to be sedated, catheterized, and kept overnight. There were no complications. From what I've researched this kind of thing usually costs somewhere around $1,500, potentially a bit higher. We ultimately, after the refund, paid roughly $4,400. I am grateful to the vets that cared for my cat, but I will never be returning or recommending this hospital to anyone. I don't want anyone else to end up in an ER, distraught and fumbling with payment information while they wonder if the time they're taking to figure it out will end up being the difference between life and death for their beloved pet. read more

InAccurate diagnosis. Took our dog over July 4th weekend as our vet was closed for growth on her rear leg. They said it was a skin tag. I brought my beloved bunny to Bulger for a broken leg and all they did was drug her up and kept telling me to put her down. The vet actually called a family member and asked her to talk me into putting her down. I was beside myself when I heard this. My bunny got urine scald from lying in her own urine and also got a fever. My bunny went into this place for a broken leg and was on deaths door because of these people. I took Lilly out of Bulger and brought her to MSPCA ANGELL, my girl had surgery that night and she's been doing great ever since. Please do NOT bring your exotic pets to these people. One of the pups from our litter got sick and needed emergency medical intervention. Our personal vet explained that this was a little outside of their ability and referred us to Bulger Veterinary Hospital. From the moment we entered, they treated us as an emergency and got us right in. The staff, techs, and Veterinarians were all excellent. Dr. Sawyer was fantastic. I know we worked with so many, and I wish I knew all their names because they all deserve accolades. We took our cat to Bulger a couple days ago. We arrived there around 9:30 and didn't see the vet tech until 11:15. We were there because our cat had a urinary blockage 2 weeks prior and was acting up again and wasn't himself. After being at bulger until 12:30am they told us the cat was fine and is most likely just stressed out that he needs another litter box and water fountain. 2 days later after this $400 visit our cat is at Westford vet getting surgery. My dog went in for a routine check up and vaccination but came out with one of his nails ripped off. A day later he's been gagging all night/morning bc of what I suspect- damage to his throat. I learned that they used a slip leash on him and he's a medium sized dog that does pull on the leash. I'm frustrated with how they treated him and not being transparent with us with the type of leash they used. I called them to ask about it and they suggested we use a harness even though they're the ones that gave him the injury. read more

Need to replace the hacks there esp in ER that are concerned only for ur money not ur pet & misdiagnose recommending wrong treatment by surgeons who don't know jack about what their doing but operate anyways to pad ur bill to get most money from every client to pay for their new costly facility there while carelessly treating ur pet unnecessarily in the process only to pitch their heartless apology and fat bill after killing ur pet like all those we've brought there thru yrs! They are pros at euthanasia though! Par for the course there now in their new butcher shop! Many of our pets through the years were brought to their prev North Andover facility in emergencies that sadly never made it out but always had a big fat bill they ran up (pretending?) to save ur pet when in the end their only medical expertise was really euthanasia! For example my doG I brought there w droopy stomach and chronic diarrhea that their ignorant vet misdiagnosed as just an old doG's weakened abdominal muscles aft their quick ultrasound scan (supposedly) aft his bowel movements had been abnormal for longest time even though he was eating ok and energetic at 10 yrs! I ended up having to watch his health then decline & them re-diagnose him w liver cancer that was the real cause of that poor boy's enlarged abdomen all along! I love and still miss him so much! But more recently my friend's beautiful shepherd I used to gladly walk for her who I loved suddenly became ill out of nowhere that his owner thought was poison who rushed him (unfortunately) to Bulger's new Lawrence facility thinking he was in good hands at this new state of the art ER (even though their surgeons aren't )! They diagnosed her as Bloat when the stomach suddenly flips over cutting off entrance and exit producing excess gas in gastrointestinal track which according to them required immed surgery to fix tacking it to the intestinal wall! In the right vet's hands it's routine though risky & expensive ($10k+) but if vet is a good experienced surgeon which I'm assuming wasn't the case there that night as they operated only for it to get infected and them needing to refer owner elsewhere to fix but sadly this awesome doG didn't make it, no surprise there! His owner said she could see in his eyes he was slipping away and so decided to end his suffering w decision to euthanize him that they gladly did to void liability! I would have suggested Acton or Westford AH instead or Angel Boston but it was too far but which I consider the finest and more affordable around! I also have cat that jumped(or fell) off my porch one night and ended up getting run over who AC brought to Bulger to treat him and $900 later he still had broken leg they didn't treat but sent him home like that! They then recommended amputation! Fast fwd 2 yrs and he's running and playing on all 4 like no injury ever happened! Anyhow, back to poor germ shepherd doG who was a gentle soul and bigger than life and an epitome of a happy healthy canine now dead!! goD forbid if I ever have another pet emergency I'll NEVER bring to Bulger where they seem to care more about if and how much $$ u can afford vs actually saving ur pet's life! One of their vet techs decided she "knew me " and judged me on the only decision I had to help my dog who was in pain. With the info I had and with when it happened I made the best decision and because surrender wasn't a option because I was told they would still "euthanize him". So be aware and also put my go fund me with my name and dogs name with a picture of us at Bulger and telling. People to report it because I was "scamming" when that's far from the truth. I had a tiny hole on my sock and I took out my needle and string to mend my sock. I sat on my chair, reached over for my glasses and in a blink of an eye the needle along with the string attached was gone. I looked in the cushion, on the ground with no luck. One of my kittens was close by me, I looked in her mouth, nothing! I thought how could such a tiny mouth swallow a needle so long? I called this ER, and as I'm getting ready to rush to them their veterinarian spoke to me to reassured that's best idea. Long story short my kitten had swallowed the needle. They showed it to me on the ex rays. Had I not been advised to have her checked, and not been seen by such a knowledgeable doctor I don't think my kitten would have been alive. Drove here from Dover NH because they can treat exotics. My rat was in distress and they did everything they could to make him comfortable and figure out what was wrong. The price of their services might be a shock to some but they are dedicated and kind and seem to do everything they can to help our little furry friends. They have a sister hospital in Portsmouth that is equally as great (the Portsmouth vet doesn't treat exotic though but they are still great!). If you need an emergency vet and need someone to do their best to save your animal...these guys or their sister hospitals are the way to go! read more

I was so upset to be told something I know I didn't do because I work til 5 why would I make a 5 appointment. I am completely done with this hospital. You can never ever get and appointment unless you plan on waiting weeks like I did. This practice has got so big that it is now quantity and not quality anymore. The only reason why I stayed at this vet was because of Dr. Renzullo who was by far the best vet my dogs ever had. I am just so beyond upset right now that this happened to my dog. I tell you this. Dr. Auntie Amber Burns, as she is affectionately called in our home is ONE IN A ZILLION!! Seriously, when we were living in California she saved out puppies LIVES!! Our vet there gave them enough drugs for a NINTY PUND DOG........ Amber was able to get them into VMSG, in Ventura, CA where they were treated and stayed in QUARANTINE for about a week and came home WELL. Amber and MANY other Veterinarians at BULGER have been WONDERFUL, a FEW not so wonderful, BUT I always call to see who is on staff in ER if the need arises, which are numerous. I will admit that their prices can be on the high side, but for QUALITY, LOVING health care from MARVELOUS vets AND technicians, you want the BEST for your fur babies! RIGHT?!?!! read more

We've had great experiences here in the past, the New COVID protocols need work. When you arrive there are signs telling you to text a certain number to check in, I texted the number several times upon arrival and it took an hour for someone to respond and get my dog checked in. I do understand that you have to wait at an emergency vet but it should not take an hour to receive a response for just getting checked in, especially if it were a time sensitive emergency...so it's a little frustrating because I didn't know if my texts were being received or not and when you try calling the number there is no answer and obviously you cannot go inside. Once we were checked in they brought him in fairly quickly to make sure he was stable since his visit was related to an incident that left him unconscious for a short period of time. Dr. Hendrickson was the provider for o ur dog, who we've seen in the past and we're happy with her exam and everything she explained to us. Overall, it's an emergency vet.. it's expensive, it will take a while but the care is good. I just think the new COVID protocols need a lot of work. read more

Great staff and teamwork here at Bulger Veterinary Hospital. My boyfriends dog got bit by another dog on 4th of July but it was more than a 4 hour wait and we had other commitments, so we decided to go the following day (Sunday.) We called ahead while we are on our way and informed an employee around 10am who just happened to walk in but she assisted us right away. She put our dog in queue and took down all the information she needed to get us right in as soon as we got there. When we arrived we pulled up to a parking spot and called them to let us know we were here. We waited about 30 minutes in the car until someone came out to get us. They kindly told us we had to switch leaches to their own which was super sanitary. After about an hour we get a call from the vet and she told us the plan step by step and when to take the meds. Since we do not have insurance she kindly gave us a coupon print out to get from Walgreens which was a HUGE plus and saved us a lot of money. After 2 hours or so we finally get a call from the front desk about payment. We asked for an invoice and got the email within seconds. Seconds after we hung up we got to see our pup again and he was so happy!!! They kindly reviewed the paperwork with us and gave us all the details and information we needed and asked. She took her time with everything and we did not feel rushed. Great work ladies and awesome teamwork. We will be back. There is a Starbuck right next door so we killed some time there while we waited :) read more

Everyone has the same concerns: how is my pet, can we afford this - these anxieties are universal. Knowing that our animal was not well - euthanasia was offered in light of his very poor prognosis. However, when we change our minds and wanted to take our dog home - the answer was - its your choice - your pet - how would you like us to help? Dr Timmothy went above and beyond with care and compassion -that quite honestly - given the reviews I didn't expect. We recently lost our ambilobe panther chameleon to a rapid onset, unknown illness. Dr. Le was amazing throughout treatment. She is easily the most knowledgeable and astute exotic veterinarian in the area. She suggested multiple options and was professional, empathic, and compassionate throughout everything. Even though we did wind up losing Walter, his best shot was with her and we felt confident that if she was not able to save him that no one could.
