Thank you Chelsea for running our daughters birthday party perfectly. Chelsea was AMAZING - so kind, energetic, and engaging with each of the kids we had at the party. She made everything so easy for us as host parents, we didn't have to do a thing as everything was all organized and managed by Chelsea throughout. She showed the kids which stuffies were included in our party package that they could select from (Ultimate Package). All of the kiddos were so excited for their new stuffy as well as the pairing of clothes, shoes and a carrier. Party lasted about 90 minutes and was extremely well priced for everything that was included. For $50/kid each received a stuffy ($40 limit), an outfit, shoes and a carrier. They all left happy and with big smiles, and most importantly, our daughter felt extra special today. NOTE: outside food is not allowed in the store, but Chelsea was so kind to let us bring in our cupcakes and we were able to give away as the kids were leaving the party. read more

We walked in excited to get our 1 year old his first birthday bear. I went as a kid and I have great memories. There were 4 or 5 staff members and the store was empty otherwise. Three of them were in a circle talking and completely ignored us and the others were just kind of standing around. No one greeted us or offered help. So we awkwardly went up to one of them and told her we were there for the birthday bear and it was just overall a very awkward experience like she did not want to be there helping us. No one talked to us after she filled the bear until checkout, where the lady was really nice at that point. The clothes and bears are overpriced of course but when you go in for the experience for your little one I think that's not a big deal. Luckily, my son is too little to have been super disappointed but it was the worst customer service in the mall I've ever got. Usually every store I walk into at least one employee acknowledges me. I even looked right at one of them looking for assistance and he nodded his head at me then continued gossiping with coworkers. read more

I brought my daughter here for her 7th birthday. It was just me and her, no party involved. She had never been to a Build-A-Bear workshop before and since she loves her stuffed toys so much I thought she might enjoy making her own stuffed bear and it would double as a nice birthday gift as well. It was an average experience in the beginning, but by the end I was really annoyed with one of the staff members. It was during the weekday, so thankfully it was not busy at all. My daughter picked out a doll and then we went to stuff it. The staff member handling the stuffing was very nice and really got into that kid friendly mode. It was her birthday and we were not in any real hurry at first so I let her take her time getting all animated for my daughter's experience. I thought she was going to just stuff the bear but she kept directing us to buy more things to put in the bear. That was a little annoying, but it was my daughter's birthday so I allowed her to go ahead and get all the bells and whistles. She ended up getting a few add ons that were under $5.00 each. This included a magical tune and some smelling chip. I did say no to the $6.00 beating heart though. About 10-20 minutes later we finally had a stuffed bear and we spent about 40 more minutes wondering the store to add on clothes and accessories. When we went to check out I suddenly remembered that there was also a birthday bear she could get that would only cost $7 (it was a pay your age deal). So I had her pick out a few more items for the new bear and we checked out. Since we got all the bells and whistles on the first bear, I just wanted the birthday bear to be stuffed so she can dress it and we could leave. We were there now about an hour and we were ready to get out of there. Over all I spent around $70-$80 for the two bears, clothing, accessories and the add ons for the first bear. The same lady helped us with the stuffing of the birthday bear and again she asked if we wanted to add a tune to this bear. I very nicely explained that I had already paid for everything, so I don't want to add anything more to it and just wanted to have the bear stuffed so we can go. I thought I was pretty clear, so I was surprised when she turned around and said we have a special birthday scent for this one. I again told her that I had already paid for the bear and do not want to purchase anything else. Then she really shocked me when she asked if my daughter could at least smell it. Ummm.... Okay? After my daughter smelled the chip and I again said no, she had the nerve to ask if we wanted to add the beating heart. Right after I had told her twice, very clearly that I didn't want to buy anything. Now I am annoyed and feel like I am being ignored, so I very firmly tell her no and again for the third time repeat that I didn't want to purchase anything else. She eventually stuffs the bear and we finally get out of the store. I am not sure if this was just one inconsiderate staff member or if this is how they conduct business. I had clearly said no serveral times and I think it is absolutely horrible that she attempted to go over me by trying to get my daughter to like something I already told her I wasn't going to buy. Three stars for the other staff member who handled our check out and for the nice and clean store. But I took two stars for the really strange (not sure what else to call it) experience. She was nice, but inconsiderate at the same time. Kept getting our names wrong, made us put our email address in 4x and still got it wrong. Kept asking my daughter inappropriate questions. Never provided a receipt for our purchase. Made my son cry by telling him he didn't get a bear because he wasn't special (it wasn't his birthday) Honestly she was awful and made me want to get a refund on the spot and not return. I just want to say that every person we encountered was amazing. But Chelsea, you are the real MVP. My mother and I went to build a bear yesterday because she has terminal cancer, and we wanted something with her voice for my niece who unfortunately just won't have a lot of memories with grandma. So we thought, what better way than a bear that can talk to her. My mom has lung cancer, and speaking loud and for a long period of time is very hard for her. We were worried about it actually picking up her voice and they were so kind to take us back to the employee only area so my mom had a quiet place to record these special messages. This is one of my favorite memories now with my mom, watching her choose the bears (or kitties in her case), outfits, recording the sounds, and watching her do the goofy things with the hearts. As an adult who is aware of how corporations prey on my kids and me, I was pretty alert to the fact that the chaos of birthday parties occurring within the store, limitless accessory options, and partnerships with Disney and Dreamworks were all stimulating my kid's consumer instinct to the max.... but, if you know that going in, you can plan to set boundaries/limits. The woman who stuffed the bear forgot to put in TWO things so she had to rip the bear apart and sew him back together. Don't even get me started on the cashier. I brought my daughter to this BABW 1x before, to create a My Little Pony plush, and found it terribly expensive. This is definitely a once-in-a-while option, and not a regular time thing for us. But then my 6-year received a $20 gift card for Christmas, so here we are at BAB again. She perused the website to "view the merchandise", and had her sights set on a Rudolph plush. Since it's after Christmas, I thought oh goodie, maybe they'll be on sale. Umm, no. The Rudolph naked plush cost $25. A little steep for a stuffed animal, albeit he does have nice light-up nose. Unfortunately, the $20 gift card didn't quite cover it, so I had to reach into my pocketbook to fulfill this gift request. An overly-enthusiastic young gentleman greeted my daughter and made the experience positively wonderful for her. Of course he talked her into adding sound, which added on another $7. Thanks, sir. The lovely lady at the stuffing station entertained my daughter in dialog about her previous experience at BAB, and then recommended we dress Rudolph in a handsome ensemble. Thanks again; another $8 for his fair-isle scarf and matching beanie. All-in-all, Rudolph was adopted into our family for $40 + tax. If my daughter receives future gift cards to BAB I may be confiscating them. This is a fun shopping excursion for kids - just be prepared that you won't get out of the store without spending $30-$50 per stuffed buddy. read more

I love the experience it creates for my daughter but damn I wish the employees would quit asking my CHILD who is not payIng if she wants to add sound, scent, etc. Not all of their customers can afford "just $5 more" for five separate add ones. That adds up fast! Otherwise my daughter had such a good time. If the management at this location is reading reviews, please stop suggesting add ons to children. Talk to the parents first about how much they are willing to add on and then ask the kids if they want it based on what the parents agreed to. It's a lot harder to say no when you're in their faces telling them how great it is. read more

I've been to this location multiple times before, but nothing will compare to what happened today. About a year I spoke with mall security in regards to their dog walking policy. I was told that as long as my dogs are not aggressive I am allowed to walk them...I do this a couple times a week when the weather is cold. During the second week of January, I brought one of my dogs to make his own bear. We had no problems & the younger associate was very friendly. We had a great experience and he loves his bunny. A week after that, I came with my other dog. When we walked in, I told the associate named Aileen that it was his birthday & we came to get him his own bear. After this she immediately asked me to leave and when I questioned why, she said it was the mall policy and she turned to the phone to call security. When I told her that I had been a week prior & did the same thing with my other dog, she didn't respond & continued to ask me to leave. Funny thing is, she was there the day I was there with my other dog. She saw us go through the entire process, pay, & leave. So why is it an issue for her now??? I wouldn't be as mad if she didn't handle it so poorly. If you have to enforce something, communicate with me instead of being rude. Also, I understand that there are various policies at the mall, but it seems like there's a miscommunication or bias with this store (because the security guard who pet my dog definitely didn't seem to mind him being there!!!) I asked beforehand for a reason. Security said yes, she's contradicting what they said, end of story. ***If she treats dogs like this, imagine how she treats other customers or kids. She was rude and rolled her eyes at my son filling up the bear. It was to the point I said something to other person working. While on vacation in Vegas this summer, my 4yo daughter saw the Build A Bear store for the first time and REALLY wanted one. For many reasons, we said not now, but when we get home. It took us a few months to get around to getting out to the BAB in Alderwood and apparently, the bear she wanted was a 'special edition' and no longer available. After a short few moments of disappointment and suggestion by the staff that we find the missing one on Ebay, she picked another and off we went. The staff were nice and friendly towards her, but I found one of them a bit odd overall. Another one explained something by saying 'They make us...' Uh, way to tow the corporate line, sistah. She picked a bear and added the speaker box in the arm, one outfit including shoes and total cost? $50 It was a special treat, so we were fine with the high cost but I just don't think that we'll be back more than once a year for her birthday or another special occasion based on that pricing. read more

As I was walking through the Alderwood Mall tonight after dinner with my younger cousin and my boyfriend, I offhandedly mentioned we should check out Build-a-Bear -- they often have cute specials but I am able to play the "I'm an adult!" trick on myself and abstain from making unnecessary purchases. So I thought I'd be safe. I was so wrong. I glanced in. There it was -- a dachshund in a hot dog costume... WITH A TINY DACHSHUND PUPPY ATTACHED TO ITS MOUTH VIA MAGNET!! If you know me well, you know dachshunds are my kryptonite. Anything cute and dachshund is fair game. I love them. The love of my life is a sweet little miniature dachshund named Zelda Z. Link and I surround myself with reminders of her -- so a dachshund at BAB? It can't be passed up. I wander into the store, cousin and boyfriend in tow and immediately begin cuddling on a piece of fabric with a dachshund at the end. I have bonded. Boyfriend shoots me a look that says, "really?" but I have committed. This dachshund will be mine. I proceeded to snuggle with this ball of fauxfur and longface until it was my turn. There were a handful of children in front of me in line and I'd be a heartless person if I didn't acknowledge how pricelessly adorable it is to watch these children fill the hearts that will go in their plushie with strength, wisdom, ears to be a good listener and a wish. Watching this process actually prompted my ovaries to go into a rather disturbing "OMG MUST REPRODUCE AND MAKE ADORABLE CHILDREN I CAN BRING TO BUILD BEARS WITH!!" mode. Which is not to say BAB makes me horny, because that's pretty sick, haha. But it definitely made me make romantic eyes at my significant other. As I watched a seven year old girl jump up and down seven times [her age] while making a wish for her new dachshund [kid has good taste!] I started to wonder if I should begin my jumping now, as 23 jumps takes quite awhile... but by the time my cousin and I got to the stuffer with our dachshunds [cousin picked one out too, yay they're littermates -- hers is Arffur, which is a name that good old Zachary Sam Z.'s ideal dog would be named :) We heart ZSZ!] we were helped by Alana, who is easily the most helpful and friendly BAB employee I have encountered. I made my boyfriend give my new dachshund, Midna [another Zelda reference, if you didn't catch it ;)] a heart with me, and it was funny seeing three people over the age kissing a small satin heart and rub it on our ears and bellies but you can't really make a friend at BAB without going through the process! It's not the same! I rarely buy clothing but in lieu of buying a hot dog costume for little Midna, I gave her a puppy. She's a good puppy mom and like my real dachshund will love protecting me from invaders, in spite of the fact I didn't pay $4 for a barking noise inside her. I can proudly tell you I have built upwards of ten plushies in my life time. I've made them for relatives or just for my own pleasure. This BAB gets high marks for staying organized, handling weekend crowds well and having incredibly friendly staff, particularly Alana -- although I did encounter every employee that was on the floor at one point or another during my visit and they were all great. I would say the people at this store definitely seem like they enjoy their job a lot more than my local BAB [Bellevue Square] -- so if you're in the 'hood and itching for a new cuddlebuddy and don't want to look on Craigslist, I recommend building a bear -- or a dachshund, for a limited time. read more

Fun place to take the kids and make a fun friend to take home. If you go on a weekend be prepared to wait but on a Monday evening you have the run of the store. The staff are always pleasant and tonight I decided to make my first one at 32 years old! My kids have been here a handful of times and they cherish the friends they create. It's a little pricey but the quality is what you would expect. We had one where the stitching came loose (very well loved) and they repaired free of charge. They put a Barcode in the animals so if it goes missing and someone turns it in they attempt to contact you to return the bear. read more

My daughter was super excited to get her birthday bear and the store was sold out. The response we got was not all that sensitive towards my five-year-old. She was in tears and we left without a bear. The store should really have a policy that if they do not have the official birthday bear (where you pay the child's age) in stock, they let you pay the child's age for another stuffed bear/animal. We love this place! We love Build-A-Bears around the country so much that we seek them out wherever we go. My daughter (monster) has a huge collection of these bears. A Kuala, Polar Bear (from their WWF collection), A lion, a couple of bears, a puppy, a frog, etc. Two weeks ago, we went and she picked out their Valentine's special, a white floppy-eared puppy dog with red and pink hearts all over him/her. She named him....Heart Puppy! How creative, don't you think? Anyway, she refuses to go almost anywhere without him now. The thing I like about this place is, you can go as simple as just a stuffed shell and a "birth certificate" and you can go as ornate as you like; clothes, accessories, a carrier like for one of those small dogs. If you have a parent in the Military (as the monster here does), you can dress them in your parent's uniform. You can make a Fireman Bear, a Nurse, a Policebear. You can make a dancer,a ninja or just a cute hip and trendy bear. You can get them little friends. You can spend as little as $18 or you can spend as much as $100+. And every single Build-A-Bear is exactly the same, all over the country. read more

Drove all the way to 'Build A Bear'..picked out our project, made a voice recording, picked out clothes ..when finished..before paying (thank goodness) I checked to see how the recordings were. NOT WORKING!! They knew it was a faulty device. It was the last one and they knew it was bad. That is why it was set aside... They wanted me to pay for it and come back another time to get a better one...REALLY!!!??? LIke I have nothing better to do. They offered no compensation for my time or their lack of responsibility to disclose it was faulty to start with. We spent all that time for nothing. Who would pay..and have to come back? We took my sons preschool class here for his birthday and they were great with the kids. The party for the 7 kids came to a bit over 300.00 and every kid got a bear and clothes. We had alot of fun and the staff didnt look annoyed or put out. It was a busy Saturday afternoon and we didnt wait in line. If I had a younger child I would do it again. read more

Sooo expensive. But a great place to come for a special occasion. The joy this place brings my daughter is worth the coin I spend. They usually have sales during the end of each season. Today we got a stuffy for $7 off and summer outfits and accessories for buy one get one free. The people that work here are exactly like you would expect.... Joyful, childlike, stuffy lovin' folk. Build a Bear will even let you restuff a BABW stuffy at no cost. We discovered this when we had a mishap with a bear and a case of the flu. Yuk! We just unstuffed the bear, machine washed him, brought him back to the store, and lovingly remade him. Good as new! My daughter and I love BABW.
