Review Highlights - Build a Bear Workshop

On a recent walk-through of the Mic Mac Mall, I found myself drawn to the bright colors of Build a Bear with its workshop full of toys.

Probably the biggest collection of different figures I've seen in Halifax. The store is quite large, which is surprising because it doesn't look big from the street. It doesn't look like much, but once you start wandering through the store you'll find the selection unbeatable. I didn't interact with the staff on this visit - they were busy chatting with someone else about board games, and I didn't need any help so I didn't bother them - but they seem really knowledgeable and excited to share their knowledge with customers.

You have to know where to look or you will miss it for sure. I happened to meet the owner Mike. A pretty relaxed guy, I guess you would have to be in this business. I have never seen so many comics in my life. This store is jammed packed full of adventure of all kinds, there is not an ounce of space not used. Mike has been at this location for about 4 years, but has been in the business for much longer. This store is know by an elite group of people already. You will find your new and used Comic Books, Game Boards, Graphic Novels (20% off) always, Action Figures, Card Games. I am probably missing a lot, but lets just say, Mike has it. Now, I have to say, it is worth the venture to see the Statue of Yoda (look at the picture attached). It is fantastic. Life Sized!! Who knew Comics had such a large following. Well they do! Go and Enjoy.

I stopped in here a few times because I always love a good comic book store experience. When I came…read morein I was really happy that they had so many cool things to look at. I wouldn't necessarily call myself a comic book fan but I love to look at the manga and figurines. I asked if they had any Archie comic books for sale and I was directed toward some and was told that they were selling old Archie books for $1.00 each. I couldn't believe my ears. I excitedly asked where I could find them and I bought five of them. I've loved the Archie books since I was a kid (before the terrible television show Riverdale came out). I thanked the store employee for being so helpful and he introduced me to their adorable dog who I now follow on Instagram. The dog's Instagram handle is @strangegromit. Please give this dog a follow. He's SO CUTE! While he isn't always at the store, if you go every day like I did while I was in Halifax, you're bound to run into him at some point.

The lack of care, compassion and simple decency by this store is disgusting. INTOLERANT people like these have NO BUSINESS working with the public. So, if you yourself are a bad person then by all means give these people money. But... If you are a decent person with decent values and if you value inclusion of all people (including those with disabilities) then STAY AWAY.

What a lovely little shop celebrating all things pregnancy and baby related…read more I happened upon this boutique today, I suppose quite intentionally as I've wanted to head in and check it out for quite some time now. The first thing that struck me was the lovely smell when I stepped into the warm store - it smelled like lavender and that delightful fresh baby scent that all newborns seem to have. I was greeted promptly and took my time perusing the selections. They have a huge array of soft reusable diapers as well as lots of books, both educational for parents-to-be and playful stories for young kiddies. They have lots of wares to make new parents comfortable, like baby slings and cozy blankets. This is a great place to go if you're expecting or you know someone with a bun in the oven. You'll find an educated staff able to support you and offer you assistance with great products designed to help out with the rough and tumble, exciting journey of parenthood.

Absolutely the most warm and welcoming baby store in town…read more It's a must for the cloth-diapering and baby-wearing set, but even parents who don't opt for this lifestyle will find something to love. There's a great, curated selection of toys, books, and gear that is sure to make any parent or child on your list giggle with delight. The staff could not possibly be any more helpful, but to go even further, they host regular workshops on cloth diapering, baby wearing, pregnancy and delivery, breastfeeding, potty training and more. The store is gorgeous within, from the barn-board floor to the blackboard wall, to the rainbow of cloth diapers on display. The front windows are always a wonderland. The store is even accessible if you can't get into Halifax. They have a vibrant web presence at their website, Facebook page and Twitter stream.

Tea, chocolates, fancy paper, cards, hand bags, home wares this is a "get all of your gift shopping done in one place" kind of store. The store is nice and spacious with a good flow to it, and is packed with goods without being over packed. It's definitely full, but not so much so that you have to sort through piles of things to find what you're looking for. Whoever does the merchandising for Kept knows what they're doing, I'll say that for sure! If you're looking for local gifts, they've got some local products in here too. I noted some local card makers up on the second floor - if it can be counted as a second floor? - and Rousseau's has chocolates there, for instance. First off, big thumbs up for investing in downtown Dartmouth!…read more Secondly, a nice expansion to the Strange Adventures brand. Providing all your comic/fantasy/sci-fi needs in a wee tiny little shop? That's the model upon which the Strange Adventures' legend was built. There are, of course, some downsides to such a small location. It can be a bit cramped and definitely intimate. If you're incredibly shy, this may not be the best venue for you. The stock is also limited but they can order in pretty much anything you want that's not in store. Still, they have the latest and greatest. Whether you're buying for yourself or getting a gift for someone, staff can help you navigate the geekery and find just what you're looking for. Overall, a great addition to Strange Adventures' line and to Dartmouth.

Here's what I knew: this small shop on the corner of Portland and Wentworth was hosting an extensive half-price sale on their comic books and graphic novels. Here's what I didn't know: that the sale was combined with a 'take one for free' deal. So, there I am, looking through the collection to pick out the first comic I've bought since my youth, and I land on a very cool Marvel Origins book that basically outlines...uh...the origins of all the great heroes. $30, half-off, a hella deal. As any customer would, I take it to the counter, ready to take advantage of the promotion when the guy says, "Cool. Enjoy." and slides it back over to me. Intelligent and articulate as I could be, I said something along the lines of, "Buuuuaaahh huh?" Yep - apparently I could have taken it home for free. Just 'cause. I mean, that's not even a sale. That's just free awesome stuff, right? Am I crazy? Anyhow, since taking it would have made me feel like a shoplifter, I picked out a cheaper comic as a freebie and paid $13 for the big one. Any shop literally shoving free product in my hand seriously deserves some of my cash. I still got a crazy deal but avoided the guilt of being the biggest freeloading first-time customer ever. A Strange Adventure indeed.
