The staff is always friendly and helpful and willing to go on-line to find details on titles and authors, and if you are looking for a book they don't have they will call you when it comes in. You can spend as much time as you like there, even find a couch or chair to sit down while you check out some books, they won't ever make you feel rushed. I have been coming here for years and am so happy this deserving business has weathered the rise of e-readers and yet they only seem to be getting better all the time.

That said, the issue is 100% the service here, as most other reviews also mentioned. I remember a few years back, they started adding a couple of percent as a fee for credit card users. Ok, I get it. I'm not happy about it, but I know credit cards can be expensive for businesses. But, the cashier- some young guy, not the owner, made a joke about how glad they are that they can charge us more for it and that if I have a problem with it, I can leave. I didn't have a problem with it, nor did I give him a reason to think I would, but I certainly didn't appreciate the mocking tone about being charged extra. There were items that were not yet priced that I asked about and was completely told off for asking about items he didn't get to yet. I think it's also stupid how four years after Covid, they still won't let you in the store without a mask. The door is covered in signs with a condescending tone about how masks are expected. Again, the attitude is that if you have a problem, leave. This time, I did.

Inside isn't much different. There are different rooms that you can go into, some appearing to pop out of nowhere. I was pretty shocked at how large this place was. It seemed so tiny from the outside, but it's deceivingly large. Schooner specializes in rare and out-of-print books, although I did notice some regular old books there too. They have paper signs indicating which sections are which and what each shelf contains. I was drawn to the mystery section which, oddly enough, was located right next to the children's section. Once I perused the mysteries I was drawn to the children's. I found one book that I remember reading when I was a child and was instantly pulled into a state of nostalgia. I think I spent a few minutes reading through it again. There was a nice older couple working the counters. They were both busying themselves on the computers while a couple other folks and I were browsing around. They were cute and the store was cute too. Top notch, I say!

And it is small. But they manage to pack quite a diverse selection into their small space. You'd expect to just find best-sellers and the like but I've been pleasantly surprised by their offerings on more than one occasion. Staff are friendly and helpful without being all up in your face about it. If you want to browse, they'll let you browse. If you have questions, they'll do what they can to help you. You can also find quite a few bargain books here. And they're often displayed prominently near the entrance. As much as I love it, please keep in mind, they're not going to have everything. They're more likely to have the latest Stephanie Meyer over Stephanie Chandler. But it is what it is.

I usually go to local shops for my book needs, but Coles has such a great selection of stationary! Even with such a small space, they manage to pack in a lot of merchandise. Looking for a day planner? They've got 'em. What about a magazine? Yep. Books? Of course. The best part of the Coles stores though? The bargain books right at the front of the store. So many $5 books! They're usually ones that were popular a year ago that are probably not selling as well anymore, but that's okay with me. Coles certainly doesn't have everything, but they're a nice little bookstore to browse through.

As for the actual factuals of this Chapter's location? I feel like it's more familiar. It just seems more relaxed overall. I know, around the holidays it's a mad house, but on the average day, I've enjoyed sitting in the aisles and pouring over words undisturbed. Don't you just love that you can read, like it's a library or something? There are some long time employees at this location, and their service can be pretty great. Chapters in Dartmouth (which is a part of the Mic Mac Mall), usually fits the bill perfectly and even combines book hunting with another of my favorite things, caffeine! Starbucks and Chapters have their usual partnership in this location, but be forewarned that the Starbucks is one of the busiest I've ever been in, line waiting is inevitable. Browsing is easy with clearly labeled shelves and the handy book searches available on the public computers. The inventory of books, magazines, games, CDs, DVDs, gifts and small home decorations is massive. Due to the large amount of stock and the general public's lack of knowledge about the ins and outs of the dewy decimal system, the staff have to be very keen and helpful which is perfect because they are. Hot Hint: Don't be afraid to ask to have any book that isn't in stock order in for you.

It's not the cleanest or most organized store in the world, but the potential bargain finds are unparalleled. I got a whole bunch of nice t-shirts, mostly designer brands, for under $3 (quite a few were a dollar or so). Since it's almost summer, now is also the time to get the lowest prices on winter wear. I got two brand name trendy light winter coats for $6 each and they both looked brand new. One of them retails new at well over $150..so I feel I got good value for money. Much better prices than at VV that's for sure. Highly recommend!
