One of the best selections of magazines in the city! Atlantic News really does have everything you want in a magazine store. Plenty of gossip, beauty, health, wealth, hobby and local magazines to choose from. Its location on Morris street is perfect! Close to residential and student housing. They also have a few snacks here and there along with tons of drinks. This store might get a fifth star if I could remember a time I walked in and met friendly staff. Now I just turned thirty years old so it could be that my memory is slipping away thanks to my old age, but I can't remember a time I met friendly staff working at Atlantic News. But do I need it? Not really. I'm there for the magazines and the magazines alone. I have enough friends. And the staff are definitely not rude. Just not talkative or smiley. There is definitely a magazine that will suit your need. I'm a big fan of neuroscience, movies, fitness and money making ideas. So lets just say I always walk out of this store a happy camper. That should give you an idea on the variety. So if you're looking to read magazines and do not need human contact or conversation, definitely check out Atlantic News. You'll see me there learning about the brain almost every week.

The best magazine shop in the city, partly because it stocks such a wide range of magazines, but also because the clerks and owners are always willing to help me find something, to the point of special-ordering an obscure title if it's not already in stock. I've had some long and very charmingly word-nerdy conversations with the clerks in this shop. Great selection that includes local mags and journals, literary journals, gay and lesbian mags, Canadian mags of all stripes and newspapers from all over the world. The Sunday New York Times comes in on Mondays, but it's best to ask them to set one aside for you, because they sell out fast.

I was very impressed with the customer service I received from the Chronicle Herald the other day…read more I called them to see if I could get my hands on a particular newspaper dated May 2009. I originally sent an email (found the email on their website). I emailed them to ask them if I could get one but after a week of hearing nothing, I decided to email them again. I explained in my email that this was my second request and that I wasn't even sure if I was reaching the correct department. The lady (name Rebecca) was so sweet and so sincerley sorry for not getting back to me. There must have been a glitch somewhere because she didn't get my original request. Needless to say she found me what I was looking for. When I went in there she had it ready with my name on it. She was incredibly nice and I felt as if she truly valued my business when I left.

Watch out y'all, The Chronicle Herald, the grand daddy of Halifax newspapers, has a new format;…read moresaddling up and taking a stand against extinction at the hands of digital media. They've jazzed up their font and created a modern new look, making the newspaper easier to peruse and more palatable to a 'one second attention span' public. The new format is conducive to discriminative reading, making it possible to simply pick out the stories of interest without having to ingest any other factoids. This type of format is created for a fast paced, no time to spare population, which has its downfalls as well. The font is larger and the stories seem slightly cropped, begging the question as to whether details are being lost in translation. Journalists are having to cater to a digitally accustomed crowd who have become used to simple clicking and scanning, opposed to taking the time to actually read anything in its entirety. Hey, I'm as guilty as the next reader - simply scanning most of the time, picking out the meaty details and leaving the rest behind. But I can't help but wonder, whether this is another nail in the coffin of the printed press. I quite enjoy The Chronicle Herald with all its talented writers, and the new look certainly facilitates a comfortable reading experience. I mean with the Metro as the alternative, I pray that The Chronicle Herald can keep things up and running for a long time to come. I just hope that this precarious step in the direction of modernization keeps this paper inching towards a larger readership instead of falling off the edge of relevancy, into a a blue bag of old news.

My first experience with Taz was when staff refused to order me a fairly big indie release in 2023…read morebecause "their suppliers didn't have it." As I type this review I see on Taz.com that there is currently one copy of that exact record in Halifax and one in Bedford. Not sure why Taz refused my $45 when I was happy to wait for the album to arrive in store. My next experience with Taz was very similar. I pre-ordered another record on Taz.com and when release day arrived I anxiously awaited a phone call or email. I heard nothing, so I checked online to see if I had misremembered the release date. There were 9 copies on the shelves waiting to be bought. I called the store and asked if my order was ready, the employee was completely baffled. While the staff did the right thing and (I assume) took a copy off the shelf for me, this is a pretty major oversight. I had received my confirmation email before I hung up the phone. Staff at the Halifax location are truly some of the most miserable people I have had the misfortune of doing business with. I have no desire to return, although I have had fantastic experiences with Sunrise Records in Dartmouth so I will continue to build my 400-500 strong record collection. Taz records is the enshittification of vinyl and media shopping incarnate. Record stores are going the way of Blockbuster and HMV and it is because of poor management and misguided ownership, only interested in making a quick buck from a dying industry.
