We got the Dinner Experience that was recommended by the bartenders. Basically its all you can eat tapas, $45 per person for 2 hours. This option definitely made sense based on their other menu options. Love the idea of being able to taste a little bit of everything. I will have to go again to taste the rest, I got full before getting through half of the menu. The trout was pretty bland, but my husband liked it. And I wasn't a huge fan of the lamb. I've had lamb barbacoa before and this one just wasn't doing it for me. I'm normally not a huge pork fan, especially pork ribs, but they were good. Probably one of the best things I tasted on the menu. They look kind of plane but they had great flavor along with the sauce that's on the plate. I also like the mussels. At first, I wasn't sure what I thought because the sauce's texture is kinda of thick almost reminded me of melted cheese and it had a little sweetness to it but after a couple bites I appreciated the different texture and flavor. The shishito peppers were pretty good too! If you're hungry and a meat lover you may not have time for these little cute peppers but they are tasty if you're looking for something different. Now that the world is getting back to a new norm and more and more jobs are requiring their employees to get back to the office. One of the only things that helps me get through the work week is knowing that I have a happy hour date planned with my partner in crime. Buena Vida does have a beautiful rooftop but they don't offer happy hour up there, so we decided to sit at the bar downstairs. We started out with margaritas because duh that's the obvious thing to do here lol. As for small plates we tried almost all the small plates (grilled chicken nachos, crab queso, corn ribs, mussels ala diabla and the pork belly tacos). I came to Buena Vida around the evening, like an hour before sunset, so we sat on the rooftop. I didn't realize the restaurant was three stories! The rooftop was so cute, the bar and the booths were so nice with the blue and green colors and all the greenery. We got drinks and had the chips and salsa with guacamole. I got the mango margarita which was good and not too sweet, you could get a classic, mango, or strawberry. They have a very extensive drink menu- so everyone will find something they like. The chips came out very warm, and the salsa was delicious. I like that it came with a red tomato based salsa, a salsa verde, and a guacamole ! It was $18 but totally worth it for all the dips it came with. It was perfect to split with my friend. I also got the mushroom quesadillas. The cheese was melted and perfect. Stopped pass for a early dinner, we were seated promptly outside. It was kind of cool out, but it wasn't too much of a bother and who doesn't love people watching? So let's get to it! You can do the ~$45 a person all you can eat experience (mandatory for the whole table if one person opts for this) or order a la cart. The portions are tapas style, so the experience is a opportunity to eat half of if not everything off the menu! (Yes, we did the experience!) Everything comes out on a first ready first to be served basis, so don't expect a particular order. We started off with the Brussel sprouts, mussels, and shrimp Al ajilo. The Brussel sprouts were hands down one of, if not THE star, of the meal. Besides being charred nicely with crispy leaves, the lemon yogurt with each bite was phenomenal. The shrimp was just OK. Tho plated nicely, It lacked a lot of the flavor we were expecting---it was pretty bland, I was looking forward to the notes of garlic and pepper. The mussels took the longest to come out (might've been a mix up since we had to reorder and it came towards the end of our meal) and arguably was worth the wait. They tasted fresh, and the sauce was so rich and flavorful. I could've eaten a pot of them. The salsas guac and chips were late to the party but once they arrived, we couldn't stop digging in. We then moved on to the cecina steak, lamb barbacoa, cochinita pibil (pork shoulder and the Caesar salad. The steak didn't look like it was going to amount to much, it was one thin sliced cut. But baybeeee, it was seasoned well and still a bit tinder. I ended up making a tacos with it, adding rice, black beans, both salsas, and guac. To my relief, there were flour tortillas available instead of corn. I'm not a fan of lamb but my hot date is, he cleared that plate so it's safe to say it was delicious too. Same for the salad, he praised its dressing as one of the best, and the pork shoulder (I didn't like this one, it tasted like Lamb to me not pork). Our last bite was the ancho glazed pork belly. The glaze was overwhelming sweet, but the pork belly itself was a nice, tasty bite. It reminded me of the pork barbecue you'd eat in the south, probably bc of how forward the vinegar was. He had a classic margarita and I had the mint and grapefruit gin & tonic. I couldn't taste the notes of grapefruit at all, but bc I'm a gin & tonic type of gal I finished my drink still a happy camper. Oh and right before the check came out, the chef sent a complimentary dessert. The churro (?) and ice cream is best eaten together, one bite at a time. The churro was really crispy, and reminded me of rind tbh, it wasn't like your typical churro. The service was sufficient and consistent. They run some nice deals throughout the week too, like their taco tuesday deal of two tacos for around $7. My friend and I shared the happy hour calamari which were good, but I think next time I get them I will ask for no jalapeno spice on it as they were almost too spicy to eat. We both got a mango margarita which was a nice taste of sour and tequila, however, did not taste much of the mango in it. My friend got two Al Pastor tacos which she really enjoyed and I got the happy hour chicken quesadilla which was very good. There was a lot of cheese and chicken, perfect amount of food. Got a chance to try the brunch special here this weekend for the first time. Its pretty straight forward: all you can eat small dishes and $1 mimosas. We arrived around 11 and the crowd wasn't too over bearing as there were plenty of open seats available. Ambiance is perfect as there's a lot of natural light coming in and the music is not too loud so you can hear each other from across the table. Service was extremely quick. Order to table for some items probably took less than 2 minutes. Mimosas are refilled generously. Each of the breakfast taco options were delicious. Additionally, the egg benedict options were all great. We picked a few other menu items which we thought were good but honestly its worth just trying anything you feel. This move resulted in the restaurant having two completely separate, disjointed, spaces with completely different vibes, set-ups, and bars. I didn't get a chance to see it, but apparently the upstairs is much nicer and more private. I came with my GF and a friend and we sat downstairs because there was no room upstairs. This resulted in our table being in an awkwardly high trafficked area, and servers were constantly passing by us. It is also worth noting that our server was very strange. First of all, she was high-key flirting with me right in front of my GF, and she literally ran her hand across my entire back when she first came to our table. She was also way overly friendly, joking with us about how she "wasn't your typical waitress" which was off-putting as well This aside, the place has a solid menu with a bunch of options. I opted for the buffalo shrimp tacos, which came in a set of 3, and also came with a side of rice and beans. Came here for the bottomless brunch and it's now definitely one of my favorite places. It has great vibes with beautiful decor and music that definitely makes you want to just get up and dance. The bottomless option is $39 for any of the small plates, and you can order 5 at a time. We tried almost everything on the menu. I personally loved the dessert waffles the most. The mimosas are $1, the sangrias are $1.50, and the margaritas are $2. I stuck to margaritas for the brunch and they are definitely worth the $2 as they are quite strong. They didn't check on us super frequently, which can get hard with VA bottomless since you have to order drinks one at a time, but the staff still was incredible kind and help us out whenever we needed something. read more

If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. We came in with a large group for brunch and were seated promptly but that was the end of the quality of service. We came in on a rainy day and we understand service can be slow with large crowds but we were 1 of 4 to 5 parties seated upstairs. Since we were a larger group, the waiter offered to put in the most popular items for us. Food and drinks began to roll out slowly but we noticed quickly that it was just a bunch of the same items that kept coming out. A whole lot of eggs.... After the third round, we told the waiter that we no longer want any dishes with eggs and we would be ordering our own food. Random items kept coming out and we had to continuously deny the food that was being brought to our table. We ordered 3 specific items and again, they continued to bring items that we did not order. We grabbed the waiters attention 3 more times to specify that we no longer wanted random items to come out and that we wanted the dishes that we ordered. 30-45 mins go by before they bring out what we actually ordered. Unfortunately they only brought a few so the entire table couldn't even enjoy the dish. We tried again to order more but again, random dishes continued to come out and it seems like they were just trying to get rid of food by putting it on our table. We decided that food was not going to work so we ordered drinks. The drinks took 30mins to come out... and it came out as we were leaving? This quality of service remained the same until the end of our meal. Right before our time to dine was up, the waiter came up and asked us for last call. We placed our orders and what a surprise! Nothing came out... what is the point of taking our order if you aren't going to fulfill it. We were even asking for water and never received it for 45 mins. We left without the ordered food, or water. Time for the check. We were upset at the service at this point so we were just looking to leave. We asked for the check 5 separate occasions and even went to the front hostess to ask for the check. We were told "just a second" 5 times and it took 25 mins to get the check. Please keep in mind that the restaurant is almost empty at this point. There are only two parties upstairs now including our table. After constant badgering for the check, we finally received it but it was incorrectly charged. We were being charged for items we never received because of the slow and terrible service. Disputing the bill took another 5-10 mins. Overall I would not recommend this location to anyone, friend or foe. The service was terrible and because we had a large party, it is automatically 22% gratuity. Please don't ask us for orders if you aren't going to bring it out. If I could rate this place lower than one stair I would. I have never felt so disrespected as a guest especially when they are charging a standard 22% gratuity. Please reevaluate your training and your customer service. This is unacceptable and appalling. read more

Buena Vida is a fun and delicious place to have lunch.  There are so many good offerings to try and they keep coming as long as you have room to enjoy them.  Our favorite dishes were the mussels a la diabla and the brussels sprouts.  We also really liked the queso fundido and the tacos al pastor.The servings are single-sized so keep that in mind if you are sharing at your table.  You may need to order multiples.  But that's no worry because the very friendly staff are happy to keep the goodies coming.  The restaurant may be a little loud but we had one of the quieter tables by the front window.  The only issue was when a party of seven stood in the hallway next to our table talking and crowding and blocking the area.  There is a waiting place by the door so I can't figure out why they had to wait in a spot where they created an annoying blockage.  Other than that, everything was great and we look forward to going again. read more

It's amazing you can still find some AYCE at $25 and under in the Northern Virginia area. Weekday lunch at Buena Vida is a DEAL and you better buh-lee dat! There used to be a time when all KBBQ AYCE places were under $25, but these days it's hard to find (still a handful out there, IYKYK). Buena Vida delivers solid food with good variety, from a healthy spread of appetizers and tacos, to some of the more substantive entrees and sides. There were a few plates that were good, but not really anything too special, but if they're hitting 4 outta 5 and you can pick-and-choose what to second, then that's no sweat off your back. Favorites of the day were the Queso Fundido (who doesn't love some sweet and salty cheese?), Mushroom Tacos and the Fish Tacos, Mexican Beef Jerky, and the Plaintain Croquettes. There were a few items that we missed trying since we ran out of steam about 90 minutes into the 120 minute limit, but we'll certainly be back to round it out. Service was great and they kept the food coming! Just as we were finishing 3/4 of the way through a round of food (ordered 4-5 plates each round), we would put in another round of plates. This gave us a good 5 minutes or so of downtime where we could let our stomachs rest and prepare for the next gorging. Admittedly, we went on a weekday when there was not that many other folks, so hopefully when the place is packed, the service is still quick and the food still comes out at a quick pace. TL;DR: If you're looking for a place to host some out-of-towners for a decent meal where you don't have to worry about quantity, or if you just want to chow-down with your favorite glutton'd friends, Buena Vida is the spot for you -- especially on that weekday lunch price. read more

I had a dinner reservation on May 17th at 7:15pm. We were seated on the 2nd floor upstairs. The guy who was supposed to be our server gave us our drink orders and then completely disappeared for over 45 minutes. I had to go up to the bartender to ask if we could pay for our drinks and leave because we were sitting there for a very long time and our server never came back to take our food orders. The bartender came over and asked if we would like to place a food order, so we finally did. The guy who was supposed to be our server magically popped back up, but he never acknowledged us again. This was the cutest place to come for a lunch with my girlfriends. They have a great tapas all-you-can-eat deal for brunch, lunch, and dinner. I recommend going for lunch during the weekdays to get the best bang for your buck. Parking is a little tricky, but there is generally enough street parking during the week. In classic tapas form, you get to try anything on their extensive menu of small plates. For a group of 7, we were allowed to order up to 4 items at a time. Our waitress came to check on us often and take new orders as we cleared out old plates. Of all the tasty dishes, the stand out ones were the apricot quest, cochinita (a little spicy), the corn ribs (to die for!!), and watermelon salad (great palate cleanser towards the end). What a great place to bring a group of work friends after a busy work day! I was in charge of picking our dinner location for the evening. I've been to Wilson Blvd many times and tried all the other places, and I've always wanted to check out Buena Vida. Our server came to our table right away with water and explained the menu and how the service works. We all decided to do their Dinner Experience at $44.99/person. All you can eat plates. Such a great deal for all the choices you get! We ordered a lot of plates so it's hard to remember all what he got, but I definitely remember we had chicken enchiladas, carnitas pork ribs, empanada jamaican, guacamole, to name a few. I never leave bad reviews so this should speak to the experience- if I could leave 0 stars I would. i came with 3 of my girlfriends (4 total) to celebrate big wins for all of us that month. First, we were taken upstairs to a table shoved a corner and blocked off by a foundational beam to the point where we could barely see anything. we were right under the A/C vent and had freezing air blasted on us. Next, our server came to get our drink order and I wanted to order a dirty martini but had to explain to the server what this was as she didn't know how to order it on the Toast machine. However, she disappeared almost immediately after this and we had to get the attention of someone else to ask if she was coming back. This person then took our drink orders again (2 margaritas, one el jefe, one dirty martini). about 10 minutes later everyone got their drinks and chips/salsa but me. another 10 minutes later i asked someone in passing if they could check on my drink. however, i couldn't find either of our servers. i went to the bar on our floor and it was empty- no tickets, nobody ordering, no activity besides the bartender standing there. I assume they may be making my drink at the bottom floor bar? another TWENTY minutes go by, at this point we've asked our second server and the manager multiple times and were assured it would be coming next. everyone in my party had finished their drinks at this point and the chips/dip. they finally brought my drink 40 minutes after i ordered and checked on it. by this point everyone (but me) had ordered a second round and our entrees. they came out relatively soon but were ice cold. i got the chicken enchiladas that were bland, dry, cold, and overall tasted like wet cardboard. i couldn't eat half of them and was starving. next, when we went to pay (via toast tab), i went last and i was about to sign my receipt when i noticed the auto gratuity. we'd already had in our heads we wouldn't be tipping much due to the entire experience. i thought the total seemed much higher than it should've been so I tracked down a manager to point out that there were only 4 of us, yet auto gratuity (for 6 or more) was added. she stated this was because we were sitting at a table meant for 6 people...ok? we made a reservation for 4 and asked to move tables due to the AC but were turned down. she said that because we'd already paid it would be difficult to reverse...again, ok??? not our problem. i told her this was unacceptable and they needed to make it right. she redid the transaction and took off the auto gratuity. no comping my drink that took 40 minutes, or the chips/salsa that came with 8 chips, nor for the ice cold food we all agreed was subpar to taco bell. save yourself the frustration and pick somewhere that doesn't just focus on the aesthetic. super underwhelming and ruined what should've been a fun celebratory night!!!!' read more
