Please save yourself the time and money by avoiding this location. I had a reservation for 11:00 AM and arrived about 10 minutes early, only to be told, without any concern, "We don't have any cars." No one had bothered to call or email me in advance to let me know, despite the fact that people rent vehicles because they have important travel plans. When I asked why I wasn't notified, the employee replied, "It's not my job." When I inquired about options, I was told I could join a waiting list already four people long or wait indefinitely, even though I had specifically reserved a luxury vehicle. I was further told none would be available that day. When I requested a refund, the employee simply handed me a customer service phone number and immediately went back to eating his food, which he had been doing throughout our entire interaction. This experience was unacceptable. I was shocked to receive this level of service from a business located in downtown Providence, especially as this was my first impression of the city. The lack of communication, accountability, and basic customer service was appalling. I wish I would have caught his name because I 100% submitted a complaint. Through Costco we rented a budget rental that we picked up here. The storefront says Avis. There was one person working at the window with a line out the door. Another person was bringing cars out & he was also collecting them. We were given a 2022 Chevy Malibu with almost 30,000 miles. It had some pings & scuffs but happily everything worked properly. After reading some of the reviews, we were concerned, but happily we got off without a hitch. read more

Had to rent a car after my sister's funeral to get back to PVD and rented one from this Budget. The lady at the desk was nice but very unprofessional. On her cellphone with someone the whole time she was checking us in. She told us there was a crack in the windshield that was barely noticeable and was already in their records so we wouldn't be charged for it. My wife and I go out to inspect the car and find that the "crack" is mor like a baseball hit the window so I took a picture. The inside was absolutely disgusting, I mean it was filthy and it smelled awful. There were kids toys, a cup holder from a car seat and even silverware strewn about. We took pictures and I go back to tell the lady, who says there are no other cars and I need to take this one but she wrote everything in on my account and told me that she was unhappy about the car not being clean and that I wouldn't be charged. But was too busy eating to come out and look at the damages. Whatever we take the car to get home from work and arrive in PVD. When we drop the car off we tell the worker everything and we were, again, assured it's in the system and wouldn't get charged. Fast forward to almost a month later, the week before thanksgiving. I received a letter from Budget stating that I was going to be charged $584.00 for the broken windshield. I called them immediately and was told they were able to reverse the charge. Two days after that the money is taken out of my account. $584.00. A week before Thanksgiving. So now we're scrambling trying to figure out how we're going to pay our bills, as well as Thanksgiving dinner because of Budget. I took the liberty to attach the not noticeable "crack" as well as what the gentleman in PVD wrote on the windshield. Customer service was warm and helpful. The location is in downtown right at the Biltmore which is super convenient if you are staying downtown. The car we received was exactly what we reserved. It was extremely dirty though. For the price and amount of office staff, someone could have vacuumed and wiped the interior of the car down. Also, it smelled like a previous renter had smoked in it. After renting so many cars over the years... I'm SO happy to finally have a great experience!! This office is the extreme opposite of the budget office in manhattan at 304 W 49th st. I drove right in. they received my car. Took my paperwork to the office and got me checked out ai quickly. But that's not just it... We were in the office as we organized our luggage to make the trek to the Amtrak station. So, I got to hear their exchanges w numerous clients and amongst themselves. Everyone here is SO nice and polite and HELPFUL! In New York we had to stand in a long, hot, sweaty line w grumpy people for 1.5 hours. This led to our pick up time being delayed by 1.5 hours. So when I dropped off the car, my drop off time was supposed to be adjusted by the 1.5 hours. NY office didnt change my paperwork. I pointed out the time delay to the rep here and he quickly and kindly made the necessary calls to his boss so he could adjust my bill. And then... while organizing luggage, one of the other reps offered to drive us to the train station since he had to go that way anyway!! Wow had I read these reviews before I signed up for a rental for my medical trip, I would not have rented from Budget. Lessoned learned I guess. We were stressed and had lack of time. First the elevator was broken to get to Budget. Was there about 1.5 hours asking everyone for help, called budget but on hold that long never reached anyone. People who were kind went upstairs to ask them for help. Kind budget lady helped me and my wheelchair get up escalator but that shouldn't have been that way. Then they get confused because they have two cars rented under our name and email address. They say they get it figured out and rent us a Chevy Malibu. We rented one of those with Budget in Dallas, TX on another medical trip and were pleased with the rental. This one we were not. The a/c heating system didn't work right and this was winter in RI. It was loud, the entire car reeked. They obviously tried to cover up a smoke smell of some kind with horrible smelling perfumes. It triggered my asthma and migraines. It permeated all of our belongings. We had to throw belongings away when we got home after washing and sanitizing everything because of this rental car, there were some things that couldn't be salvaged at all. Then we get receipts for both cars again when we get home. They also charged more than other rentals. But the worst part was the smell that made the trip more painful and ruined/trashed our belongings. I tried to complain multiple times. They said nothing could be done. They didn't seem to understand how harmful/painful it was. They offered no recompense. Do not rent from this company in this area is our opinion. read more

We were deterred by earlier low Yelp ratings and first tried a different car rental, Enterprise -- even though the other Rental was much further away and not at all convenient. We ran into a system issue with Enterprise and rented from Budget. Turned out to be the best decision!! For one, we reserved online and were able to get to the pickup at 5:58 pm and they were closing at 6pm. Adam (i believe was his name) was super friendly and helpful; stayed beyond closing to help us out. With college drop being the next day, this was truly a godsend!! We got an awesome Ford Broncho - super clean, new, features like car play. We were clearly told about Labor Day timings and when we needed to get the car back. Return was super seamless and took a few mins. We will surely be using Budget as our primary choice because of this experience. read more

When I picked up the car it was not cleaned completely and it reeked of marijuana and the associate said he couldn't do anything about it because all of the cars smell like that. The smell lasted in the car for days. It permeated our clothes and luggage. The smell became an issue when we encountered the police at a check stop. The car was searched and we had our children were in the car. The driver side windshield wiper did not work properly and of course it rained on the trip. Also the rear brakes were grinding. I called customer service and I was offered a $40 credit. That was insulting. I spoke with customer service rep Daniel. Never again. read more

I'm giving them a one star because I can't go any lower. I arrived in Providence, Rhode Island for my daughter's wedding and was given an EV. I was not told about the vehicle nor prefaced on the maintenance it takes to keep these things charged. I was also given a car that was not fully charged so the first night, I had to hunt down a place to charge my car. The first charging station I went to told me it was going to take nine hours to charge the car. I had to go to two other places and found a fast charge however that was still one hour to wait. I did not do that much driving, but it was once a day, sitting for an hour to charge the car. It was also $20 every single time I had to charge. Fast forward, my flight gets canceled and I have to fly out of a different city. I was then told that my electric vehicle had to be returned to the same airport- that I would need to come get a gas vehicle to be able to switch drop off points. On top of all that, they wanted to charge me $120 to extend the day so that I could do the turnaround. I can't explain to you how horrible this whole thing was from the lack of information, to incredibly rude employees at the airport, to all the above. Zero customer care or service. This place is a disaster!!! I reserved a vehicle for 4pm on Saturday realized I wouldn't make it, so called the corporate office they said my reservation would be good for the next day. I get here when It opens. They have no cars for reservations and there are 10 people inline. Whoever is running this establishment needs to retrain their employees. The employees were also very rude. I would recommend avoiding this place like the plague Update: I returned my Vehicle two days early and the difference between would Iquitos and my final price was almost 100 dollars. I asked the manager about this discrepancy she simply stated that is what I signed for. After a 10 minute phone call with customer service my issue was resolved. This is the single worst run busses that I have ever seen. I will not be returning and advise everyone reading this to chose a different location. I did call and make a complaint about this location to the corporate office they said they would be escalating the issue and have someone from corporate to come out and see what is going one. I have a business account with Budget; this is my first time at this location. I had made my RapidRez reservation online and prepaid for a full-size vehicle for 14 days. There were no full-size vehicles available at the time of pickup only smaller ones. I am a tall man so I had no choice but to upgrade to the smallest SUV available. The attendant tried to get me to pay a higher than published daily rate for my business account then settled to the fair published price after I questioned it. Before telling me the total she charged my card and signed the physical inspection sheet without checking the condition of the car. I headed into the car and opened my contract... they didn't charge me an upgrade cost, they charged me the full rate in addition to what I had already paid. I went back in and they told me they didn't know how to correct it. I called customer care and they said they would release the erroneous charge. Moments later they charged me another $100 for the supposed upgrade cost. It is now 4/6 and they still have my funds tied up. They gave me a case # on 4/1 to reference but have since then lied over and over about the status of the money they wrongfully charged me for. Going to transfer our business to Enterprise. read more

Be wary! The owner knowingly rents vehicles with expired registration. Owner also encourages employees to add on expensive options if people have limited English skills, says horribly racist things about customers, and pays the majority of their employees under the table. Deeply unprofessional, usually a wait for a car (even with a prepaid reservation), and the cars are never cleaned very well. Just avoid if possible. read more

Could not say more negative things. 1. They did not walk us to the car. Gave us the keys to the wrong car and came running up after we had packed up, adjusted the seat and mirrors, and figured out how to connect my phone. They made us switch cars to the exact same model. 2. Display showed 2% oil life. I pointed it out to the guy and he said it would be fine, despite a week and a half rental and unlimited mileage. As I was driving it went down to 1% while I was no longer in the state. A different budget office had to bring us a car to exchange. 3. General vibe and feeling of annoyance from the employees, like I was doing them a favor. A very palpable unfriendliness. 4. Did not do a walk around with me to check for damage. Every other company I have used does that. 5. The Budget employee was across the street at Avis (there was a sign on the door saying go to Avis). Rented a car here for one day based in the low price and ease of pickup. When I returned the car, I was told all of their computers were down, and they could not give me a receipt. The daily rate was supposed to have been $35.99. I returned the car one hour after the 24 hour rental period, and was charged an additional $27 (almost as much as another day). When I called to ask for an explanation of the charges, the man I spoke with become angry and rude immediately, then hung up on me. I should have known to avoid this place, as when I came in to pick up the car, the same man was screaming and yelling at a customer on the phone, then disparaged her to his co-worker after he hung up on her. AVOID!!!!! Negative stars if possible! Do not rent here. Worst customer service ever. Had I checked their Yelp reviews, I would have run screaming in the other direction. Reserved my car 2 weeks in advance, bused to Budget and was met with a surly rude punk by the name of John. He snapped "we don't have any cars for you". I Let him know I expected to have my reservation honored and he said "I got a Mini van" I refused the van and complained it was too big and 22 gallons pr mile was not in my order (his mileage quote), I informed John I would be lodging a complaint and his response was "I don't care". I remained there arguing the point of I wanted the car I reserved and as if by magic John left the office and pulled up with the exact car I expected. He said "this one just got dropped off", no one had entered or left this establishment during the time I was there. My advice "stay away!" There are many other choices in the area with professional service reps who not only use respectful language but also will inspect the car with you prior to leaving the business, I had to do this on my own to insure I was not left footing a bill for repairs. read more

The downtown Providence Budget car rental saved our vacation. Specifically Amber & Janis who worked Saturday Aug 10. They were supposed to close at 4pm. Our bus was supposed to arrive 3:05pm but was running very late. These two ladies waited for our bus to arrive close to 4:15 & gave us a great Kia Soul. The corporate drone who answered the phone at budget Hq said there was no way he could contact a local office as I attempted to reach them by phone while I was on the bus. Eventually Amber picked up the phone the 10th time I tried & reassured me they would wait. As budget was closed Sunday, we would have been out of luck until Monday without her. read more

Second time in 4 months I have rented from this location. I fly in from Sacramento and rent from Eddy Street. I have used Budget all over the country and never had this issues. My car has had check engine light on, filthy, scratched and dented. The location has charged my credit card not debit card without my authorization numerous times and I have had to dispute and resolve with my credit card company. The manager who use to own the location is extremely dishonest and tells people it is not a corporate location. He does not honor cooperate coupons and often gives you the bait and switch on rental price. I will never rent from this location again. I am a huge fan of Budget overall. In the future I would rather pay the additional charge to pick up at the airport than deal with this type of business operations. I booked a car a week in advance and prepaid for the reservation at the time of booking. Then I showed up a half hour after the reservation and was told that they had rented out my car and that I would need to wait for someone else to return a vehicle. Meanwhile, there are other vehicles sitting at this location that they refuse to update me to. I spoke to customer service and was told that they were willing to do me a great favor by transferring my reservation to another budget location -- way out of my way -- if I was willing to pay an additional 80 dollars. Wow! What a great deal! I book a car for a specific time at a specific location and prepay for the car to be there, then you either force me to wait for hours or transfer me to a more inconvenient location at my own expense. This was a terrible experience. They were very nice face to face but when my bill came there were hidden fees. I called to complain and the owner tried to place all the blame on me, gave me the wrong information about correcting the billing and called me a liar. Turns out he was wrong, I called the national number and my money was refunded in 2 minutes. I spent 45 minutes and 3 phone calls with the local branch here getting berated and lied to by the "owner." I can only hope it was some rogue employee having a bad day and not the actual owner because it was the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Also, these ppl own the Avis across the street. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. When they try to tack hidden money onto your bill, CALL THE NATIONAL NUMBER. Bad place. Same owner with avis. I made a reservation for weekend. But when I went to pick up. Scott the owner said that I don't have a reservation. And he offered me a lot more than my reservation. So I canceled. But he still charged me $150 for car also plus $200 for deposit. He charged me $350 without a car. I'm going to report as a frud. read more

If there was an option to give this car rental 0 stars, I would have chosen that. The owner is extremely rude and short-fused. I requested for him to explain the charges to me because we were charged more than we were suppose to and refused to hep me. I don't understand why people work in the travel and tourism industry and not have any customer service etiquette. Being in the industry as well, this situation could have been handled much better than he did. I had a bad experience last Spring returning a car to this downtown location. It was not made clear to me that there was no lock box after hours and I had to catch a bus back to NY. I left the car in the lot with a note and left the keys with a lovely woman who was next door at the downtown parking garage. I was lucky nothing happened but I was very put out. When I called customer service, all I got was a rep in the Philippines telling me to 'go return the car to the airport". When I called the next morning I was reprimanded by the man on the phone. I wrote a nasty review. I decided to go in person and talk to Scott, the owner. He explained to me that there is a lot of crime overnight in the downtown area and they can not take the risk of a lockbox. I agreed that it made sense but I complained that the customer service and information were not user friendly. They need to put up a huge sign reminding people that once they are closed they are closed. In any event, Scott offered me a one day comp to try Avis again. I did and did not have any problem.
