This Avis location's employees threatened me and harassed me shortly after I paid for and picked up my rental, so that was kinda a nail in the coffin for a poor overall rental experience. My boyfriend and I arrived at Avis, and when getting our IDs and credit cards out to complete the rental process, we dropped some cash out of our wallet. A person in the lobby immediately pointed out that we had dropped this cash, we thanked him and picked it up, and completed our rental agreement. Immediately upon getting on the road in our rental, we received 6 missed calls from our rental location. My phone had been on silent, but I answered the next incoming call from them, assuming either we or they had forgot something. The employee calling immediately started our call telling us to turn around or they would be filing a police report and reporting us for stealing. I initially assumed they meant I was stealing the car I just paid for, but then he clarified that they believed we stole a large amount of cash we found on the ground, and if we did not turn around and hand over all our cash, they were calling the cops on us. I calmly told them to check their video tapes, as it dropped from our own wallet, but continued being yelled at. I asked for a manager, and the employee rather ominously told me that a manager would not be working until Monday when we returned our rental (5 days from our pick up date) and that they couldn't wait to talk to us in person on Monday. I felt super uncomfortable with the implication that I would need to interact with this person again, even if a manager was present on our rental drop off date. I want to reiterate the cash being demanded was definitely ours and came from our wallet, and was in the sum of around $200-250. It seems to me they believed they could get some quick extra cash by harassing, scaring, and extorting customers with their limited level of authority over me, and I strongly advise any potential customers (especially women!!!) to choose a different rental company or at least a different Avis location. read more

The north providence location is the most absolute worst experience someone to possibly have with them I rent to drive for Uber and they never have cars available. They save them for their friends. They are rude and unprofessional. They tried to charge me extra days. They still got paid and put me on the do not rent list. There's only so many places you can rent to drive for Uber. They have cost me months making no money. Just a single mom trying to survive day by day. They are the absolute worst . The two cars I had from them were dirty smelled like cigarettes, I got bad reviews for it no matter how much shit I bought to make the car smell better you could still smell it. You're better off paying a deposit somewhere else and getting better business. Take my advice and save yourself the headache read more

Cars are never cleaned properly inside or out. I've brought this up with the franchise owner and the district manager. They were both at the location when I asked how come the cars are barely cleaned and the exterior is filthy. I wanted they just found out their shop vac was broken and they do b it have access to water at that location. But there is a car wash 3 miles away. Fast forward 8 months and still I've gotten into vehicles that have dirty interiors and the exterior is covered with salt and road residue. The windows are not touched. And you can never call directly into this location. They flip the vehicles as soon as you return so they barely spend any time to clean or even refilling the gas if previous renter returned not full. I had a vehicle recently that stunk so bad from previous renter smoking weed and interior was filthy, oil light kept coming on, I had to add a quart of oil. Informed the employee upon my return and I get a "I'm so sorry" nothing for my lousy rental experience. And I rental practically every week. Service is pretty much non existent. I've now given up on this location and will have to rent from the airport location. read more

My complaint is not with Avis but it is with Priceline. Priceline billed my cousin and myself. In the month of August we rented a car, my cousin was billed and so was I. I called them and they said they would fix it. I called my bank and let them know about Pricelines error and my conversation with Priceline. My back called Priceline and they stated that they were going to fix their error. My bank debited my account, here we are in December and my bank took the amount out of my account because Priceline did not recitfy their mistake nor keep their word. I called them and they keep telling me I got the money back from my bank. I re-iterated to them, that my bank debited my account on their word that they were going to pay them. They did not pay my bank. They absolutely refuse to give me my money in the amount of $150.00. It was bad enough that they tried to double bill, my cousin and myself. They were rude and refuse to give me my money! read more

I posted over a year ago about how we were given a beat up truck and then Budget tried to charge us for damage they previously marked on the truck (they also tried charging us for a low tire pressure indication light). Fortunately we had pictures. Last month I decided to give Budget another try. I made a reservation at Budget in Reno, Nevada and when I arrived at the airport location found out that I was placed on a "do not rent to" by this Budget location because I gave them a bad review last year. read more

This place is located in downtown Providence. I walked here from my hotel (Renaissance Hotel). I booked online and promptly picked up when I got there. The car (Toyota corolla) was a little dinged up, but it got me from point a to point b (Newport). I'd reserve here again. read more

I don't normally write reviews, but I feel like the top reviews are inaccurate. I made a reservation at the Dorrance Street location a few days in advance. When I arrived, I waited maybe 5 minutes for the transaction ahead of me to be completed. Once it was my turn I showed my ID, swiped my card (first time using my Avis account), and was given my key. The car was ready to go, had a full tank, and was clean. The folks even let me park out front for a few hours until I was ready to get on my way (my nearby hotel only had paid parking). The return was equally as seamless. No complaints - recommended for a convenient downtown rental. read more

I rented a car from the Dorrance Street location on May 6th for one night. The first car I rented broke down (starter issue), so Avis after hours customer service towed that car and gave me a replacement car which I returned on May 7th, 2023 before their closing time. A customer service representative at the Dorrance location checked the gas in the car and inspected before I left the location. There was no damage to the car. This location is claiming that I damaged their car and have put a claim of almost $4,000 to my insurance for bumper damages. The paperwork they have submitted is inconsistent with what they are claiming. There are many inconsistencies but the big glaring one is that the paperwork shows that the damage is done on 5/10/23 and their paperwork shows I returned the car at 4:51 on 5/7/23. There is a three day gap between when I returned the car and when this supposed damage was done. My car claim insurance claims person and I shared the discrepancies but they are still claiming that I have to prove that I didn't do the damage or Avis will submit this fraudulent and unfounded claim to a collection agency. I have tried calling this office numerous times and I just get sent into the main Avis customer service who keeps telling me to call the Dorrance street location. Once when I did get through, the manager was not in, she only works 9 am- 1 pm so left a message for the manager, June Santaro buts she one will call me back. I feel like I'm in a nightmare. They are committing fraud by blaming me for a damage I did not cause. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS LOCATION. read more

This is the worst car rent experience during my stay in US. When I picked up the car, I wanted to add a Loss and Damage Insurance. However the staff add the Full coverage instead of the LDW only. This is not the first time that I rent a car in your company and even not the first time in this branch. Everytime I ask for a LDW, the staff just provided what I asked except this time. When I checked the price with this staff, he told me, as I thought was 16, not the 60 exactly.I admited that I neglected to check the bill again but your staff made the mistake first. I really wish that AVIS can teach every staff in your company LDW DOES NOT mean LDW+ADR+PAI. I hope the staff was just stupid instead of cheating. read more

Referring to the downtown Providence location on Dorrance St....This was an awful experience, I am so angry at the service I received. To start, my fiance and I walked in to find another couple frustrated and stranded. My credit card was declined because I was charged a $500 deposit on a $180 rental. Then the woman behind the counter made up some fake policy of only being allowed to swipe a card twice after I payed off the balance. All the while she's reading a lunch menu right in front of me. I was almost stranded in a faraway place with nowhere to go because she was antsy for her lunch break. It ended up working out fine, I took a train to Boston and rented a car that required a $30 DEPOSIT. This place was the worst, please avoid it if you have any aversion to stress. The woman could have easily worked something out and got us in a car, it was just none of their concern. read more

Avis / Budget in downtown Providence is AWESOME! I love this place. I received amazing customer service from Janice (and Taylor). These two agents are so kind and excellent at their jobs. They really went above and beyond, and they are just great people! I definitely recommend this place, and Providence is such a lovey city!!! read more

If I could give less than 1 I would. Possibly one of the worst experiences ever. Waited 1 hour for a reserved car. Every few minutes we were told a different story...cars are being cleaned...there are no cars...would you take a minivan... none appeared. Finally got a very old Toyota Corolla. Left the lot to do an errand and the needs maintenance light went on. The car kept beeping... it smelled of smoke and I couldn't breathe. Needed to take an hour trip and was truly afraid to leave the city. So I brought the car back. The clerk didn't believe me and gave excuses. Said they had no more cars, but eventually gave me another corolla. It was newer, cleaner and no smoke smell. My 10:30 reservation became a 1:30. Was late for my appointment and stressed beyond belief. When I returned the car to Warwick I was told that Providence location is privately owned...they should be ashamed of treating people this way. NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION AT ALL!! They lie to your face with no problem at all. They offer us to upgrade for $10 more they our bill came off the roof. Our rate was $315 per week after taxes and after two weeks we have to pay $410 before taxes per week. They made us to go to the bank because they dont accept two different cards and when we return with cash it was too late for return time and they charged extra day $95 when i called the cooparete the dispute the charges, Shellette was rude, ignorant and unproffesional to handle the case. Her id number 32608. She doesnt give a shit about customers. We had to pay extra 350 and now dealing with bank for the dispute UPDATE I DID CALL THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEY TOLD ME THAT WE ALREADY OFFER YOU $100 AND YOU DID DECLINE THE AMOUNT. YES I DID DECLINE THE AMOUNT. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. AVIS CHARGED OVER $350 AND YOU ARE GIVING ME $100 TO KEEP MY MOUNT SHUT. I WAS OVER THE PHONE WITH THEM 20 MINUTES AND THEY HANG UP THE PHONE ON ME!!!! WAY TO GO AVIS WAY TO GO!!! read more

It's been a while since I gave a business 1 star, but Avis really deserves it. I had reserved a car online and was emailed a confirmation saying everything was all set and just show up at such and such a time to pick up my rental car. The confirmation email did say that if I cancel my reservation within 24 hours of my pick up time that I would be charged a $10 fee (which seemed reasonable). So I go to pick up my rental car today and when I give the employee behind the counter my license and the card I used to reserve the rental he asks for a second credit card - which I don't have because I don't like to use credit cards (and really who needs 2 credit cards to rent a car). I'm then told that I can't actually rent a car and that I need to cancel my reservation. I then asked if he could just do it for me and I was told that I needed to do it myself and that I would be charged the cancelation fee. I tried to call the corporate customer service number to dispute this and was told that there was nothing that could be done and in addition to the $10 cancelation fee I would also be charged a $50 "no-show" fee, even though I came to pick up my rental and never opted to cancel my reservation. I immediately placed a stop payment on the card that I used for the reservation, but I foresee having to dispute these fees further. Avis seems like a big scam, and they are just out to screw you with fees and other ridiculous charges. Also, I have a great driving record (no accidents, no moving violations) and decent credit. Just for reference. read more

Good luck choosing this among other car rental service. Once you gave them that credit card, see how they found a way to charge you much more than what you thought. I got charged double and I only rent for 1 day. I regretted very much. First time and last time using Avis. They will never get any business from me or my friends. read more

I've used Avis many many times over the years, and I've always had good service. This branch is no exception. For example, they gave me a free upgrade, and when I turned it down for the smaller class car I reserved (no way was I driving down to NYC in an SUV), it took about 2 minutes to swap back to a compact. I will say that one potential negative to keep in mind is that this branch has limited hours. The time I came they closed up shop at 6pm and so I had to return the following morning to drop off the car and close out. I didn't get charged for the overnight though, so it was a minor inconvenience. No hassles for me, I'd use Avis again if I wanted to use a rental vs. adding mileage to my own vehicle for longer trips. read more

Three different cars at this location reek of cigarette smoke and the employees seem to know, but don't seem to care. I was given a Camry yesterday with nearly 40,000 miles on it, and it clearly had not been washed or cleaned inside in weeks. Worst rental car experience I've had in a very long time. read more

June was AMAZING and super nice! I stopped in the other day on my drive back to NYC. I wasn't feeling well so I wanted to take the Acela instead of driving the four hours back to the city. She initially said my trip would cost a lot more money since I didn't return the car to the same place I rented it. Then she worked some magic and made it come to the same price. NOT ONLY THAT.. she drove me to the train station! Super nice and makes me happy to know people still care about others! Will definitely rent from This office again! read more

One of the best location and service, I have a commercial account with them and I love this location. Very easy and outgoing employees.

I returned a car at the location this summer and had an exceptional experience thanks to Scott. Imagine driving with my two young children (ages 3.5 and 2) from Boston to upstate NY,in tandem from Boston to Providence - a 5 hour drive can easily become 7-8! We arrived at the here and Scott directed both of us to the parking garage across the street in order to process the rental return and transfer bags, two carseats & kids to my Aunt's car. Scott made this transition hassle-free by insisting we take our time. For that I will be forever grateful! As for some of the more negative reviews, I can just say know your contracted terms. My dad and husband travel a lot and have always instructed me to pay attention to potential add-ons when returning the car. I had absolutely no issues at this location. Thanks Scott! read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! I reserved a car through Avis.com for pick up at this location and this location CANCELED my reservation two month prior to the pick up dates and didn't even inform us! The person who runs this has no integrity. Imagine flying across the country with your spouse and kids and being unable to get a car you had reserved 5 months prior b/c the owner decided the deal offered on Avis.com wasn't something he wanted to honor. Avis said they would credit me the difference of a car I rented elsewhere but I'm still waiting for the credit and it's been 8 days since we returned. read more

Booked a reservation for A Premium SUV for 13 days. Price for the duration was around $238 which seemed unreal however when we called corporate Avis on the day we made the reservation they stated that's a valid current offer. We prepaid in full and exactly a month later we are receiving a call from the local Avis at this location telling us our reservation is cancelled because the rate we paid for was a glitch in the system. They refuse to do anything for the customer and all they do is give a name to contact in Avis......nonetheless inconvenience me the customer and providing much unneeded stress.......beyond pissed off .....classless organization in my book read more

A year or so ago I rented a car for a weekend with this Avis location. Everything went smoothly and I was happy with the service. So when I needed a car this weekend I chose them again. I checked the enterprise website for prices, then called Avis to compare. Avis's quoted "full" price was 230$ for four days, which was about 80$ cheaper than enterprise. I made sure I asked if that was THE FULL PRICE I WOULD BE PAYING AT CHECKOUT. The women on the phone assured that would be my final price. Went to pick up the car Thursday morning. There was a women and a guy at the desk. The guy was going in and out checking the cars. The woman was busy with another customer so the man helped us. He rang us up and said "that'll be 446$". EXCUSE ME, WHAT? The woman chimes in and says that it's just a holding fee if we use a debit card - we weren't using a debit card. So again, it's going to be "230$ total, right?" and again they say yes. We take the car, leave for the weekend, and return it in the same condition we got it in. Then I get a 446$ charge on my credit card. When I call to question it the man on the other line tells me "looks like you had additional charges for loss damage waiver & additional liability insurance. 27.99 & 15.95 both of which are OPTIONAL and I NEVER AGREED TO. He just kept giving me the same answer and refused to try to do anything to make me, THE CUSTOMER, happy. So if you want to be charged double the amount you are quoted for bullshit charges that you never agreed to pay, and deal with extremely rude, useless employees, then BY ALL MEANS rent from this sorry excuse for a car rental company. I will never rent from those scumbag theives again. read more

What can I say? Worst car rental experience ever! The "manager" is full of @%$&*%# and this is not a customer friendly place at all. Was not clear that the agency has no drop off policy. NO WHERE in the crappy office is a single sign to warn you that you must be back before closing in order not to be charged an extra day, which I was, even though I went through every possible telephone number listed and made sure that the car was not just left there. I was supposed to return by 3:45 and when I got there at 4:55 the place was locked up. The Manager told me the next day that there was a woman there at that time. I banged on the door, etc. and not a soul. I went to the parking garage right across the street and the LOVELY woman on duty helped me. She called her boss, explained the situation and I left the keys in an envelope with her. Meanwhile, I called, emailed and texted Avis to alert them of my misunderstanding. I was never told that there would be no alternative. I left a note in the car on the dashboard and caught my bus back to NYC. The next day I called and the Manager was extremely rude to me. I was charged an extra day and I was going to block it on my card. I didn't since the Avis customer service folks were supposed to call me. Yeah, right. NEVER EVER EVER USE THIS AGENCY. NOT GREAT CARS, RUDE SERVICE AND UNFRIENDLY HOURS AND POLICIES. I WILL NEVER USE AVIS AGAIN AND I RENT CARS OFTEN!!!!!!! read more

The way they operate at this location is to have you sign the paperwork which details the car's condition, noting that the gas tank is full, before you get to see the car. I was a few miles away before I noticed that the gas tank was 3/4 full. I told the agent on return, and got no real response. He did note that I had signed the agreement, saying the tank was full! Three days before our pick-up time, we discovered that Avis unilaterally cancelled our reservation for a premium SUV for $238 for 13 days before we were due to arrive. From the comments, it looks like Matthew B had literally the exact same price and time period and also had their reservation cancelled. read more

DON NOT BOOK WITH THIS LOCATION. Zero stars. We booked a vehicle months ahead, pre-paid (meaning, they held our money for three months), had a reservation #, and received a notification ONE DAY before we were to pick up to take on a family vacation that our reservation had been CANCELLED. When we called to inquire, we were told first that the vehicle was not available (explain the purpose of a reservation, PLEASE?), and then with a different representative, that we could rebook but the price would be 10X our rate originally promised. We are looking into action with the attorney general's office - this was a bait and switch situation. read more

Similar to what the other reviewers have said, the employee is very rude. I rented cars from Avis before at the same location and the people were nice, however, if anything comes up, the employee will talk to you in a very harsh and aggressive tone and accuse you of wrongdoing even if you did not do it. Please record videos and take tons of pictures of the car when you first get it. I've never done it before and now I will start doing it because of the treatment that I got from them. The employee will not listen to what you said when they think you are wrong and insist that they are right (note that I didn't insist that I was right either). Avoid Avis Providence at all cost. Avis is good in general but the employee from the Providence's branch is just not who you want to deal with. read more

I don't know your name. You are a middle age woman who was scrolling on your smartphone when I entered your establishment. You didn't smile. You didn't acknowledge my presence for about 30 seconds. You did not have a name badge and your did not introduce yourself. You rolled your eyes at me 3 times during our interaction. First time when I declined the Avis liability insurance. The second time when I asked about second driver policy. When I picked up the vehicle, I noticed the tank is 3/4 full but the contract says FULL. I came back in and u put your initials: P. ( can't make out second letter) next to the FULL and rolled your eyes the last time. Please read this as constructive criticism. I am not a burden to you. I am a customer. I rented a car from this location through Priceline. It was a long term rental, as I would be there for almost a 3 month period. June 11th-August 15th. I rented the vehicle for the total amount of 1428.70. When I went to pick up the car, there were none available. I had to wait for almost 2 hours. When one arrived, the contract was drawn up, but it stated that they would have to charge my card monthly. I was concerned because the amount listed was a per day charge that, in the end, could be different than what I originally had planned on paying. I bought this concern to management attention, June Santoro. She assured me that because of their system being unable to process the full payment at one time, I would be charged a total amount of $1428.70. Any adjustments would be made on the end. She wrote this on my contract and gave me her business card and email, if there were any problems. During the almost 3 month period, the car's oil light came on. I contacted the rental company, spoke with Janice, who told me that I could get the oil changed and present the receipt for reimbursement. I did that, because I was out of town and unable to return car for service. When I returned the car, I presented the receipt for the oil change. They charged my card over $1488.00. I called this location several times, with no return call from June and corporate office said I needed to seek reimbursement directly from the local office. There has been no adjustments for the $60 overcharge or oil change reimbursement. Customer service is very poor at this location. If there is any price differences to be charged, all should be explained upfront and concerns should be addressed immediately! read more
