I've still only heard from Corporate Customer Service via email and I'm still not certain why it took four days to close out the rental agreement so I'll up it 1 star for my mistake. *** UPDATE 7/31 5:45AM Good news - the bigger charges ($68 & up) have currently dropped but I've been charged $43.95 for roadside assistance that I didn't authorize AND that was put on the car on the 29th. I realllllly need the ability to give 0 stars because, if any review deserves that (or negative #s), it's this one: Rented a car on the 20th through the dealership. Returned it on 7/24 to the dealership and they confirmed that it was returned on the 24th. Started getting charges on Monday (so far I'm up to about $350 and had to shut my card off so they'd quit charging). I called Corporate Customer Service on the 29th and was told that the reason I was still being charged is because the car hadn't been returned yet and that they were going to email the rental location to let them know to stop the rental since I'd turned the car in on the 24th. Later that day, another charge so I called again and was told they'd "escalate" the issue but that might take 48-72 hours to get an answer. They asked for my email address so the escalation team could contact me so I gave it (again, because I'd already given it to the person who told me they'd tell the location to close out the rental agreement). This morning I get an invoice to a TOTALLY different email address (one that I had not provided so they're really lucky all my personal info went to an email address I owned) and now I owe $50 so I call Hertz Corporate . . . again . . .and I'm told that I'm now being charged $50 (on top of the other stuff) for "roadside assistance" that I didn't sign for and didn't use. I asked when this roadside assistance (X2) was put on my agreement and was told "the 29th" by "the counter". I asked how that could be when the car had been returned by me on the 24th and was told that the car was returned to the rental location on the 29th. So I'd really like an explanation as to why the car that I returned to the dealership on the 24th that they confirmed was returned to the rental location on the same day was marked "returned" in the Hertz system on the 29th with two NEW charges for something I didn't add and didn't use.

The person who waited on me said, well, we have vehicles avaiable but to get your discount, you will have to arrange the rental on line. So I sat on the seating in the office and proceeded to make an on line reservation. The online service said no vehicles available, which I knew there was. I relayed this to the employee working the desk, and she said, nothing I can do about that. Offered absolutely no help at all and could care less if I rented a vehicle. I walked out, went home and signed on to Enterprise on line and within minutes had a car reserved at a lower rate than Avis. When I went to ENTERPRISE to pick the vehicle up, it was quite a different experience. The ENTERPRISE representative was professional, unlike AVIS. I was in and out in a matter of minutes. We will never ever rent for AVIS again. Enterprise is leagues above AVIS. Glad to have had the option to elect ENTERPRISE!

Their advertised vans - for instance, a Mercedes Benz, had 173,000 miles on it when I rented it - needless to say, I returned it within two hours. Brakes were defective on it. Instead I took a Ford, with over 120,000 miles - a little better, but it had some major mechanical problems. It was dirty, as well. So I cleaned the entire inside - front and floors. When I returned it, they charged me an extra day for no reason. After I explained to them that I actually returned it not only on time, but about three hours earlier than planned, they still charged me an extra hour. Then, they added a $50 cleaning charge, something they never mentioned in the beginning. I cleaned the van before returning it, but they would not take the charge off. I will not rent from them again. Reasons: (1) false advertising, (2) added, undisclosed charges upon return, (3) major mechanical issues on their high mileage vans, (4) unavailability to discuss charges after the return.
