If I could give this 0 stars I would.
Coming from South California as a temp for a Modbar based cafe, I was really excited to check out Buddy Brew's newest shop in Hyde Park, Tampa. I am in town visiting some family, and I'd heard about the aesthetically pleasing marble countertops and the Modbar set up, so I excitedly made my way through the construction-riddled village square to the visually quaint coffee shop. I had been to the flagship location many times previous on visits to Tampa, so I was optimistic despite the 97 degree weather and noisy construction. What I was met with at the Hyde Park store was a disappointment.
First of all, let's focus on my poorly made cup of coffee that I ordered. I wanted a simple Kenya Pour Over, and while the barista knew what to do with the exterior of the Mod Bar pour-over station, the equipment she was working with was clearly improperly set up for that roast. As someone that has worked with Mod Bar, I know how to set up the water temp and amount to come out for different roasts. What I received was not a balanced cup. It's only common sense that you should receive a full carafe of coffee, but my carafe was 100ml short of what it should have been (seriously guys there is a metric measurement on the side of the kalita carafe) and the coffee just tasted poorly extracted. Frankly, it tasted like an old roast, too. I'm not sure if that's just the way their Kenyan beans taste, or if it really was an old roast. It's just a shame the pour over station is improperly set up at the expense of the customers experience, though. I'm not a snob but I'm also not inexperienced, and I think it is common knowledge that 1), you should have a FULL carafe of coffee when you order it 2), your barista should understand how to work with the equipment available-- including the machines under the marble. What a shame.
Now let's move onto what is just the pure ethics of the place. Buddy Brew is not what they used to be. What was once a company that specialized in craft roasting and the true, antiquated art form of coffee-making is now nothing more than a sham, focused on aesthetics and not coffee practicality. The baristas I encountered were nice and helpful, but clearly inexperienced (and who can say that is their fault.) The owners and management really dropped the ball on this one. Rather than hiring experienced baristas (or bothering to train the inexperienced new hires), they would sacrifice quality for visual appeal. But even that isn't entirely accurate, as it is obvious that the Modbar groupheads are visibly falling apart (due to what I'm assuming was a poor installation because ModBar is honestly foolproof, folks) and the pour-over station is putting out an inaccurate amount of water for the roast type I requested.
Whilst doing some work on my laptop, I peripherally stayed vigilant for any signs of management and direction as I sat at a rickety table and drank my mediocre coffee. At one point, one of the baristas went to the back to fetch management. The barista brought out what I'm assuming was the general manager (an older Hispanic man) and showed the grouphead issue to him. The manager had the most vacant and dismissive look that I've ever seen as the barista appeared explained the issue to him, so the GM moved the grouphead back to its initial position, and returned back to his office, only to not come back out for the next 2 hours.
What I am trying to say is this-- buddy brew is run by what appears to be a dismissive management team that is clearly more focused on the visual appeal of the shop and not the functioning practicality or coffee based training for the baristas. The shop itself is beautiful, but everything it stands for is not at the forefront of their business model. I can only assume sales are low or continuing to go down due to the lack of training and experience implemented at this store, and I fully expect this store to not last longer than a year...two years tops. With construction crews tearing up roadways and scheduled to tear down the building across from buddy brew, it was already a ballsy move to open up this shop. But to open it during a historically slow season, in the dead heat of summer in South Tampa where you have a customer base with a traditionally elitist mentality (a mentality that would not be caught dead walking through a construction site in 100 degree weather) and then install an untrained team to work with machinery that is falling apart-- absolutely senseless. Buddy Brew's Hyde Park location will be nearing its expiration date in no time.
So sad to see what was once a blossoming company make the classic coffee shop mistake and focus more on aesthetic and brand name, rather than craft coffee and the practical aspects of running a store. I will not be returning to buddy brew, and I can only hope that this review reaches the right ears and eyes so that the flaws of the Hyde park store can be addressed. read more
