First off, the food is great. However, the service has been lacking during two of my three visits, and it doesn't matter how great the food is if the service stinks. Trying to make a reservation was so difficult that I had to drive to the restaurant, only to be told by some very snippy young girls that they could not get us in. Recently, we had a double birthday celebration and our server forgot multiple items (including the cocktail for one of the birthday people, who had to wait 15 minutes after the rest of us got our drinks!). We had to sit and wait to eat until the last entree was brought out, and side dishes were completely forgotten. Again, food was terrific but this establishment needs to do better on the service side. Just picked up take out; 1 lb lean brisket, 1 lb fatty brisket, rack of picnic ribs, collard greens, beans, potatoe salad. My biggest pet peave is lack of trimming the cooked brisket. The amount of trimmable fat easily equals 20% of the weight. There's a huge difference in marbling and lack of 0post smoke trimming. The ribs were not tender, they were somewhat dry. Ambiance was great, loved the inside restaurant and outside patio options. Service was quick and our server was very informative. We ordered rack of ribs, salted potato, shredded pork, beans, & cornbread. Sides were good a flavorful, ribs and pork was ok, but not as flavorful as we would have hoped. Bland on flavor and would have enjoyed a more baked in flavor, but the sauces they offered were good and helped to take the meat up a notch. Visited Buddy Boys restaurant last night with a group of 6. I have frequented the original restaurant for their sauces and brisket. First time in the new dining area which was an awesome atmosphere. Our service was good and most the food was delicious. I and another guest ordered meat platters the spare rib's were dry and not good. Very dissatisfied when you have high expectations and the ribs were poor. I'm willing to give them another shot but will be hesitant to order the ribs. read more

Out of all the bbq places I've tried in Minnesota buddy boys is by far the best. It all started when I saw their food truck and got the brisket sandwich but the brisket was so good I just ate that all by itself. I then found their location and am in love. A friend and I drove up here based on a recommendation. We planned on feeding several people and got cornbread, beans, links, brisket, burnt ends, rack of ribs. The ribs and brisket had a great smoke ring, tender but a little dry. Links were ok. Cornbread with the honey butter was amazing. Beef burnt ends were awesome. Was going to try the beef rib but it wasn't avail. I would still go for the cornbread and burnt ends, maybe try a few others too. read more

Never knew this place existed until Covid struck. Old St Boni truck stop converted into a very cool BBQ place. Outdoor fire cages, places to sit, also inside dining. The smell on the property is fantastic. Loved the brisket and beef ribs, nice and tender and juicy. Not a big fan of the sausage as the texture was too grainy and it falls apart. Turkey was also delicious. It's a bit of a trek, but a great destination place with unique character. Where to start. I have mixed feelings about this place. We tried it for the first time last week. We ordered: The Rack and Pulled Pork pack. Collard Greens Grandmas Kimchi The Rack of ribs was inedible. We were pissed! It was super salty. I'm not salt sensitive, and I couldn't eat it. My wife and I each had a rib, and we threw the rest away. $50, buh bye. Now, the Pulled Pork. AMAZING!!! Words can't explain. We will definitely be back for more of this. The Collard Greens, again AMAZING! I haven't had greens this good since I was down south. My wife tried them for the first time and she loved them. Again, will be getting this. This was our first visit to Buddy Boy's after driving by it a few times over the past year and we had mixed opinions. The property itself, is very nice and I'd love to visit again during the warmer months. I'd recommend this restaurant although having been there once, I feel better equipped to enjoy the experience. As far at the space, the restaurant definitely has a higher end feel which was a nice change from a lot of the BBQ restaurants we've visited over the years. It smells delicious from the time you step out of the car and truly amazing when you walk through the front door. It's decorated very nice, and I didn't feel that the tables were overly crowded although there were some oddly placed tables you had to maneuver around. Our table was up against a glass garage-style door which probably would have been fine, but being it was one of the coldest days of the year so far, it was pretty uncomfortable (cold). I thought the menu was a little confusing at first and we had to ask our Server how to order a little bit of everything. We were really interested in the Sampler but that wasn't one of the items you could order a smaller size of. I'd love to see a small and mid-range sampler although we were able to order ala 'carte without any issues. The sauce situation was a bit frustrating. I always felt that part of the BBQ experience is trying a variety of sauces. But here you get an option; this item gets one selection of sauce, this one gets 2, that one gets one... Honestly, I didn't really care for any of them. They were ok, but nothing spectacular and seemed to all have a similar flavor. The food was good. We've traveled around Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kansas City for BBQ and always try Brisket, Ribs or pulled pork and Sausage. Buddy Boys meats had a wonderful appearance, good smokey flavor and everything we had was moist. We were a little disappointed with the lack of any seasoning. I always try the beans and although they were loaded with smoked meat, they lacked salt and were very bland. But I took mine home, warmed them up, added a tiny pinch of flaked salt, and they were delicious. What I thought was really strange is that everything was barely warm (even the fresh-cut fries which you'd expect to be hot). I took a bite of sausage the minute it was delivered to our table and it actually almost cold. I warmed up the leftover sausage for breakfast the next day and it was wonderful! Lastly, our Server was very nice, but I feel the staff was a bit undertrained. We're always interested in the type of wood(s) that's used for smoking and when we asked, "it's just plain wood" was the answer. There was some confusion on the drinks we ordered (Wine and a rum and coke shouldn't have been difficult) and we couldn't quite get the correct take-out containers for the items we were taking home. But this certainly wasn't a deal killer. I think we're a bit more use to the passionate BBQ circle in Texas and just need to adapt. The Credit Card Surcharge is absurd so be aware it'll cost you more if you pay by CC. All in all, I'm not disappointed in the experience and thought Buddy Boys was a good place to try out. read more

Ok how do I start this review? I have so much to say and want to ensure I capture all the amazing things to say and not forget something! I've been told and told for a while that I need to get here and check it out and meet Chef Joe and his amazing wife Jennifer and try what I'm told is some of the best BBQ in Minnesota and some of the best in the Midwest! I love great BBQ and it's up and coming for sure here in Minnesota with some killer competition BBQ but also killer chefs! It's located about 25-30 minutes outside Minneapolis and it's worth the drive no matter where you live! This place is serving up real BBQ and smoked with 100% passion and love for this craft! This isn't someone trying to sell a lot and mass produce it and lose the flavor and cover it with sauces! No Chef Joe is making everything in house and the ribs are ridiculously amazing! Sauces that will bb low your flavor buds and the highest quality of meats and veggies! Everything is Minnesota sources and the passion and love for the food comes out! The service is outstanding and you can tell the employees who work there love their job and love the owners! I was able to get a sample of everything there and I couldn't tell you what my favorite is because it all was amazing! From the Amish chicken to the Texas size melt in your mouth beef ribs, to the pork chop steak and the pork ribs I got lost in flavors and tenderness! The hot links and pork tenderloin literally melted in your mouth and then the sides of Mac and cheese and beans were ridiculous! I've added some of the food pics for you to drool over but if you don't experience it you might miss out on something very special! You have to be gluten free? They got you covered! No worries! Keto? Stopped here numerous times and have always had great BBQ.. until today. Ordered a Turkey sandwich, half pound of Turkey, half pound of brisket. Received 1.5 pounds of Turkey and half pound of some brisket, mainly fat. In the past when we ordered this, we had incredible melt in your mouth beef brisket.. today it was mainly marble. We didn't see this until we got home, a good hour drive from the restaurant. Turkey was amazing. Staff could use training on customer service. Wasn't concerned the order was wrong, gave us a bun and told me to make my own sandwich. Will we be back? Not sure. read more

Disappointing experience. First is it a BBQ joint or modern steakhouse? Wife ordered brisk sandwich and it was 70% fat, we're talking about the fat cap on the cut of meat. I asked the waitress if we could get some meat off the "flat" of the brisket, in the snootiest way ever she said we have USDA brisket. Wow, wait staff doesn't know products, somebody isn't trimming meat properly and it went downhill from there. She grabbed the plate and my wife said no no no don't throw it out just grab some replacement meat. She came back 3 minutes later with a cup of fat with some meat on it. Seriously??? She picked through the sandwich ate what she could and left a pile of fat on the plate for the trash. I'd of sent it back and stopped at the gas station for a hot dog... - And charging us $1 for a side of pickles, literally a tiny cup with three slices like you find on a McDonald's burger... Not trying to be petty but she was annoyed, so where we... The tip reflected. - I had the big boy. Perfect cut of brisket, sausage was on point, pork ya can't hardly screw up! Love it! - I do miss a assortment of sauces most BBQ joints offer. - Good help is hard to find. Brisket isn't easy to make, I've made 100's of them and it's a skill. Yeah this place nailed it! From eating Texas brisket on a monthly basis and come into this place they mailed it of course I went at lunch time so everything was fresh, the M word, and hot. Brisket IS a science...you must go at the correct times! I had 1/4 pound of fatty sliced brisket, quarter pound of burnt ends, and the brisket chili... all of which were magnificent; the spices were on point, the bark was to write home about, and I am a spicy kind of guy so I did like the ghost pepper sauce. We visited buddy boys at 3 PM On a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We were surprised at how busy the restaurant was at that time of the day. They did not have a table available, but did have plenty of outdoor dining. They have a mobile kitchen where you can order sandwiches with chips. Very limited menu. We really wanted to try some of the barbecue but we're not looking forward to sandwiches. One of the employees told us we can just order takeout from the hostess and help ourselves to the outdoor dining area. So that's what we did. At first I was a little shocked at the prices. But once we received our order, we could see that it was a substantial amount of food. We ordered a couple pounds of brisket, which was exceptionally good. And 1 pound of pulled pork. It was also pretty good. A large order of mac & cheese, which everyone really loved. The cheese sauce was made with white cheddar I believe and had a really nice flavor. And not gooey canned cheap cheese sauce. We also got a quart of the collard greens which I thought was very good. In all our order was more than enough for 4 hungry people with a bit left over. So the price really was appropriate, comes out to about $40 per person with gratuity. I would definitely go back, but next time with a reservation to sit indoors since the day we were there was pretty hot. The inside of the restaurant is really nice and offers a great view of the open kitchen. Very well run operation indeed. read more

Ordered 2.5lbs of brisket tonight. There were four strips of brisket and then 6 pieces of meat that looked completely different than any brisket I've ever seen, that were 50+% fat. We ordered online for a small coworker gathering. I called ahead to get details in person and the person that answered was very friendly and had great suggestions on our first-time order. Picking up the food was easy and Covid-friendly. Staff in person were inviting, clearly busy but attentive and I got our food right away. We made a special trip after seeing this restaurant when driving through the area. The ordering process is not clear. Menus are placed after the register, no other signage. The only food on display is cake. I shared with the cashier it was our first visit. So he walked away after pointing us to the menu. We ordered brisket, pulled pork and turkey with a side of potato salad and macaroni and cheese. There was no way to tell fountain beverages were an option. The food arrived shortly after finding a table outside. A young worker said, "did you order a bunch of meat"? Were we supposed to get sandwiches? I got that impression from the cashier The pulled pork was served at room temperature. This is dangerous. The pork had no smokey flavoring. The serving included a big chunk of inedible fat gristle. The brisket was cooked perfectly, fall apart juicy. Unfortunately it tasted like perfectly seasoned pot roast. Not at all like bbq brisket. The turkey had the most smoke flavor of the three. The potato salad was tasty but needed smaller chunks of burnt ends since they become quite hard when cold. The macaroni and cheese was also at room temp. I cannot recommend a restaurant that does not adhere to safe food temperatures. Bathrooms are immaculate. read more
