Yuck!) a dish that blew me away last time I had it - the burnt ends skillet - which had weird textured and tasting meat, and what seemed like old mac n cheese. Really hungry and place was relatively empty. Hostess seated my husband and I joined 5 minutes later. We waited for 15 minutes for water or any acknowledgment. The food at Buddies in Holt is very good. Their nachos are excellent. So is most of their Mexican food. I had burnt end tacos tonight at Buddies In Okemos. The description in the menu looked good. There was a good amount of meat. Very little slaw on the tacos. The beans tasted like they came out of a can. They were extremely dry and looked like it sat on the plate for a while. The rice was mushy and clumped together. It and the beans were lukewarm. Save your money. Order the nachos. Hopefully it is as good as the nachos in Holt. read more

I must admit that I forget about this place. I'm not sure why. Their menu is very good, and I consider their garden nachos probably some of my favorite in Lansing. I'm glad they still do the coupons in the mailer book, because it may be the only thing reminding me to go over there. The service was great. I prefer the newly painted and open feeling dining area. We were seated and as we were walking through the restaurant my shoes were sticking to the ground. After we were seated we sat there for 30 minutes not being served as the waitresses were walking by looking directly at us saying nothing. I approached the host stand to ask if we even had a waiter. She then said she would get us a waiter and proceeded to walk to the back kitchen. We waited another 5-10 minutes, still waitresses passing by us. We stopped at Buddy's Friday night. We had the BEST person waiting on us, Nick. He was awesome. We know that we were taking our time, enjoying a couple drinks, etc but he would stop and check on us, ask if we were ready to order, if we needed anything, etc. he was very attentive. There were a couple times we seen him literally run from a customer table to the back to get something. WOW. We inevitably get to Buddies every visit to Okemos because it's my Dad's favorite place. It's actually difficult to get a bad meal here. I've tried multiple dishes and loved every one of them. They have a good selection of beer, including craft brews. You can get Italian, Mexican, Salads, and American fare. The portions are unbelievably huge. Enough for at least 2 meals if you're not a big eater. Prices are reasonable and they hey take all credit cards. Awesome place. read more

The food is decent for what you pay for. The service is EXTREMELY slow. Don't come here if you're in a rush. The appetizers are clearly store bought frozen foods. The wait staff seem to spend more time paying attention to each other than to their tables. It's also very very loud. The standard American food is always very good (I personally love the Southwest Chicken Salad!) with choices that please everyone in my family. Wait staff are always helpful and kind. Only complaint I have is the lighting. . .get rid of the bare bulbs (!!! current craze, I know. . .) and the glare from windows facing the parking lot is terrible! We always request to have the shades brought down, though, and the wait staff comply without any attitude (although it does require them work harder!). Hope you try this place! read more

I'm an East Lansing native, and I love to ask people not from the area where they like to eat in my surrounding area. My former boss (originally from St. Johns) told me his favorite place to go was Buddies Pub and Grill. Oddly enough, in my 20 some years in East Lansing, I had never been there, so I figured I'd go check it out. Buddies Pub and Grill is pretty much what you would expect- a pub and grill. I was actually surprised that their menu was as large as it is. Typically you see most pub and grills with a rather limited number of menu items. This place seemed less pub and more grill. The server we had was pretty nice, and made a few recommendations for us. When we got our food, I was happy to see that the portions were pretty generous. However, with mediocre food, whether you get a lot or a little, it's still mediocre food. I tried the meatloaf and was underwhelmed. I went back with a co-worker on a different occassion and found myself asking why did I agree to comeback. I guess the morale of the story is don't let recommendations get you too hyped up. This place was probably a 3 star, but lost a star when it failed to meet expectations, which still means its average at best. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here on a Saturday night after a football game. We found it on Yelp and decided to give it a try. We sat on the sports bar side. At first I thought we were going to have an issue with service (no server came right away) but then Theresa came over, announced she would be our server and after that, we were never without service. She was great. I ordered the blackened salmon with a side of grilled veggies and a baked potato. I was expecting frozen mushy veggies trying to make a pass at being a grilled veggie. They were delicious! I could have eaten an entire plate of them. The salmon was also very good. Two large pieces of salmon--I could have gone a little more rare, but I realize that I might be in the minority here. My boyfriend ordered the chicken spinach wrap and was happy. Overall, I'm glad we stopped in. A decent beer list. The wine list could improve but I realize it is a college town bar. We will be back. read more

Came here for a business lunch and was impressed. We ordered the nachos and Chicken Pesto sandwich. When our order arrived I quickly realized we had made a mistake. The portions are enormous! We didn't need to order two items. The nachos are served piled high and hot from the oven. It is enough food to share with 4 people. The chicken pesto sandwich has crispy chicken with pesto sauce and bacon on a focaccia roll. Delicious! This is a place I will definitely try again. Excellent food. Trust. read more

We'll be cautious coming here. Had to ask for the sauce to our wrap 3 times and wait 20 minutes for it, then we pay and our waitress carelessly throws my debit card at me which it hits the floor and I have to to pick it up. Obviously careless employees who work here, they need better training. Yikes. This is the type of place you go for beer and beer only. And maybe some fried bar snacks. And only if you're really reallyyyyy hungry. The dark carpet and wood accents give off an old-school hotel restaurant vibe, and the food is about on par with what you might receive through Holiday Inn room service. Sorry to bring you into this, Holiday Inn. I love simple fried things smothered in cheese just as much as the next American, but my roast beef wrap with queso was borderline inedible. The beef had zero flavor whatsoever (save for the mounds of Velveeta it was paired with) and was terribly chewy. The baked potato soup I ordered was a-okay, although needed some spicing up and could've easily come from a can. Oy. The waffle fries were good though - perfectly crisp, substantial little salty guys that saved me from crying into my plate. Oh, and service was friendly and speedy. read more

This place usually has decent bar food. On this trip I ordered the mini beef nachos. I have ordered them in the past and had been happy with them. This time i was disappointed. There was not near enough cheese and beef distributed through out the nachos. Our server appeared to be upset about working or just did not like us. A live band was performing. They were awful. Normally i prefer the juke box, but that is bad here as well. It has a horrible selectioin of music, and it all appears to have come from the Disney channel. read more

Gross and cheap: the only two words to describe this place. The tables and chairs are like something you'd see folded up in the corner of your grandparents' garage. No ventilation that works, which sucks because everyone smokes here. If you don't smoke, you're gagging on other people's fumes. We gave this place another chance because it's close & has several TVs to watch the game. We got some special fall drinks, one of which required an angry orchard, and when I told the waitress it tasted bad & would like an angry orchard to add to the drink, she said they've been out for a few days. So, who knows what the drink was made of. Our order was placed and 15 minutes later we were told they didn't have what we ordered. This place is just slow & not on top of their game. We did greatly appreciate our waitress though, she made the most of our bad luck with the bartenders & kitchen staff. -- We sat at our table for about 20 minutes, watching 3 waiters/waitresses go to each of their tables a handful of times and watching the staff at the bar stare and point at us. (There were 9 parties in the place at this time, most of which were mid-way through meals or at the bar.) Eventually a waitress came to our table & asked 'Has anyone helped you guys? No? Okay, dibs!' If it weren't late and we weren't hungry, I was more than ready to walk out. Regardless of terrible service, I have enjoyed their food in the past- but tonight they got my order wrong, a simple mistake, but after having waited so long for service and our food already, there was no way I was sending it back to be fixed. The simple mistake was reflected on our bill by overcharging us, which we pointed out and got fixed n. Nice bar/restaurant. We have always liked the food from the menu here and the nachos are HUGE! The afternoon pizza buffet is not the same quality as the food ordered from the menu though and I would not have it again. They have good burgers, steaks, chicken and Mexican food. They have some very long booths! The service is sometimes great, other times a bit on the slow side. There is also a bar side and they have or at least used to have live music some nights. read more

The food is always good, the specials keep things interesting, and best of all is the staff... they're always friendly and attentive. My favorite entrees include: fajitas, nachos, any burger, tacos, chicken breast dinner, all the pizzas, and dinner salads. I recommend the following appetizers: hog wings, Mexican dip, artichoke dip, and especially the Monday night chicken wings (best in town).
