Four of us went here to do some exploring for the Friends of Red Rock Canyon Cultural Resources Team. From the large parking lot, we went around the flood control basin and headed up the wash. There were several shelters we needed to GPS and measure, and we were looking for some Indian roasting pits. Heading toward what is the northernmost part of Summerlin, we found one of the large shelters. From there, we found what could have been the roasting pits but they had been damaged by runoff when we have heavy downpours. We then got on one of the mountain bike trails--Toque. This trail is a connector to other mountain bike trails that are hidden from the 215 and Cliff Shadows Parkway. The trail goes around the base of the ridge and it's an easy, single dirt track trail used my mountain bikers, hikers, and horseback riders. There are a lot of cacti and other desert plants along the trail and growing out of the limestone ridge. The view of the Strip from here is a delight. The park has restrooms, lots of parking spaces, a corral for the horse people, and several tie ups for horses. It is another gem of the parks that have been built by the City of Las Vegas. It's amazing how quickly you can be from everyday life to wilderness. Enjoy!

For starters, make sure you bring hiking boots! There are plenty of different routes you can take either on the bottom next to the mountain or on the mountain itself. The trails are very very rocky on the bottom. Very awful to be walking on long distance. Took the mountain trail and did about an hour and made it about 2.5 miles with breaks. The whole trail around the mountain is probably around 5ish miles. They do have restrooms, hand washing staton, doggie bags, and an equestrian center. There is graffiti all around and there was a few homeless people roaming around. Not the safest trail I've been on. Definitely wouldn't do it alone. I did love how it was challenging and then would level out for a quick break. Will come back to do the whole trail next time.

Very nice trail and there's a parking lot and directions at the beginning. However it can get boring as it's the same path and view for a while above the homes of summerlin. But not very difficult but quite the workout still. I went early but it was still too hot, I think spring and fall are perfect here.

Thanks to fellow Yelper Renee N., we just learned about this trail that has probably been around for a while. My husband and I were able to complete a lovely 4.2 mile-ish hike this morning, surrounded by great views of the surrounding mountains and communities of Reverence and Providence, plus the Strip. Apparently used often by mountain bikers as well as horse riders, we saw numerous trails that you could choose from to extend your exploration. We stuck to the main trail that basically loops around the large mountain you see off of Cheyenne and the 215. The trailhead offers clean restrooms, which is a bonus. If you head out for a hike, be sure to start early if you want to beat the current heat; there is no shade at all on this trail.

Hiking at Buckskin Cliff Shadows took us 4.99 miles. There are severals ways to hike this trail. The Trailhead is located west of the 215 Beltway and west of Cliff Shadows Parkway at Cheyenne Avenue.  It is lightly trafficked out and back trail that has scenic views and is easy/moderate in my opinion. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, horses, and mountain biking. This hike has lot of loose gravel. Trekking poles would be helpful. It is accessible year-round, although summer months will be very hot due to no shade. I have seen people with dogs use this trail but must be kept on leash. As always, take plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and leave no trace. Overall, a quiet nice park with trails and especially after sunset on top of the hill, it has a beautiful view over Las Vegas. Go out and stretch your muscles!

The wife and I frequently walk on these trails for the work and boy does it work you out! Sometimes we run the trails, if we really feel like punishing ourselves. With trails like Toque, middle earth, the verbs, and Jenny from the block, you can easily get a 5 to 6 mile workout in on these trails and if you feel up to it you can scale to the top from a trail on the back side. I also take my Mountain bike up on some of these trails for some good fast fun coming down. It's a lot of good fun if you like this kind of stuff.

There is plenty of parking at the trailhead along with covered picnic tables and restrooms at the trailhead. We knew the trail wraps around the backside of the mountain so once we stepped foot on the trail, we beared to the right and headed NW. I wore my fit bit and can tell you our round trip from beginning to end was right at 10,000 steps. We took several water & photo op breaks along the way so maybe 2-3 hours. We are slow pokes and proud of it. The weather today could not have been any more perfect. About a 5 mile loop today. Speaking of photo ops, the scenary on this trail is breathtaking! All the rain we had these past 8 weeks made much of the entire mountain ( especially the south facing side ) covered in wild flowers! Everyone talks about driving to the Mojave Desert or Death Valley to see the wild flowers. Heck, stay in town and hit up this trail. Many species of cactus and Yucca trees. My favorite is the red barrel cactus. This trail is AAA +++. Bring the kids and have your own adventure on the backside of the mountain away from the hustle & bustle of the city. The front half of the trail runs behind a office building complex along Cliff Shadows parkway. I am already looking forward to my next hike back here. Of course, bring hiking poles, a hat, sunglasses, plenty of water. This is the time of year to hit it before the dreaded summer heat kicks in. Lace up your hiking shoes and have at it!

To get here you'll need to drive north on U.S. 95 from Las Vegas and then turn west off the 95 onto Cold Creek Road, which runs in between two prison facilities. It's about 17 miles of paved road until you see the sign for Willow Creek in your right. Once you turn, you will be on a dirt road and please remember to drive slow as there are residential homes along the road and animals. You will pass some picnic tables along the way that are great for a picnic or rest break. It's not very maintained out here, because the creek has washed out roadways and the proper authorizes stopped maintaining the road, so you will find people at times camping, but not often. Most of the time it's dirt bikes, ATV's and 4x4 high-clearance vehicles stopping for lunch after riding the rugged road past Willow Creek. The amount of water in Willow Creek (about 3 miles from cold creek road where you turned for WC) depends on how much runoff from rain and snow fills it. The Nevada Spring Snail can be found in the creek, but please let them be and don't add anything to the water. Habitat loss effects the snails. Cottonwoods, willows, wildflowers and many beautiful shrubs thrive along the creek where wildlife likes to hang out. I heard lots of critters scurrying around in the bushes. You'll need to bring plenty of water and as always you'll need to pack out what you pack in. Nobody wants a trashy area and since this area isn't maintained as much it would be great if we who use it could just keep it nice. If you decide to drive through the creek and proceed further you will need at least a 4x4 high-clearance vehicle to safely make it through. Past the creek it's extremely rugged and will take you through Wheeler Pass into Pahrump. It's about 28 miles from Cold Creek all the way through to Pahrump. There are many other side roads and even one that will take you to Indian Springs. It's so so so important that you know where you are going before taking Wheeler Pass all the way through and have a map for sure. It can get confusing not knowing which road you should take and some are better for trucks/jeeps than others. Dirt bikes and ATVs are the best option for Wheeler Pass. Many have and will attempt to make it all the way through only to have to turn around because their vehicle simple cannot make it or they get stuck and need help. Oh yeah, cel signal pretty much doesn't happen out here past the creek. If you make it far enough you'll be lucky enough to take in the Tecopa Charcoal Ovens. It's a really fun ride when done right!

Las Vegas Overlook Loop…read more Review: In the last 12 months, we completed this hike 2.5 times. Our first time was February 2019 just days after Las Vegas was hit with snow. The challenge then was the cold weather and slippery/icy terrain. We attempted this hike last summer before 7 AM and turned around after 2 miles due to the heat. We just hiked this trail a few days ago and the weather was perfect. This hike is no cupcake, but at the same time, I didn't think it was too difficult. Just keep in mind that the total distance is a little over 6 miles, it will take over 2 hours to complete, the climb is between 1,500-2,000 feet, and 90% of the trail is exposed. If you ever climbed Exploration Peak or Lone Mountain and thought either one was hard, then this hike is NOT for you. I compare this hike to Turtlehead Peak or Gass Peak. The view is awesome!! Stats: According to AllTrails, the total distance is 6.3 miles round-trip, 1,534 ft elevation gain, and rated as "hard". My stats are about the same. The only difference is that my Garmin has the elevation gain a little over 2,000 ft. Location & Tips: I'm unsure where exactly the trailhead starts, but you can park off NV-159 and Fossil Ridge Road or GPS to Cowboy Trail Rides (4053 Fossil Ridge Road, Las Vegas, NV 89161). Due to the Coronvirus and all of the shutdowns, the main parking is currently closed, but you can still park on the side of the road or in front of the parking lot. There is typically an enough space to safely park if you get here early. -Start from the Horseback Riding signage and head down the trail. The stables will be on your left side and as the trail begins to merge right. Take the first trail past the stables on the left. The trail is clearly defined (even in snow) and easy to follow. -Around .75 Miles: You will see two trails; one is leading left and the other is straight. Head straight and from there, you'll reach a few switchbacks. After 4 sets of switchbacks, you'll reach a split. The trail to the left heads to Muffin Ridge and the trail to the right heads towards the overlook. Follow the trail to the overlook. From there, it's another 2 miles to the highest point and the overlook. -The overlook is around the 3-mile mark. Enjoy the view, snap some pics, but be careful. Keep in mind that you're still on top of a mountain. Gravity always wins. -Heading Back: You can either backtrack back to the trailhead or continue on the trail to complete a full loop. Continue the trail and you'll reach the flattest part of the hike. You know you're there when you see the solar panels. Continue to follow the trail to another trail dubbed Bone Shaker Extreme. Follow that trail down and watch your footing. Parts of the trail is rocky, slippery, and potentially, bone shaking dangerous. Follow that trail and eventually, you'll reach the area that leads you back to the trailhead.

Park at the Cowboy Trails horseback rides parking lot off of SR 159 and head towards the horses. Just follow that road until you see a trail to your left and follow it; using the AllTrails app is recommended as there are various little trails there. It's about 2.7 miles to the overlook with gradual elevation gain along the way. You'll know you've arrived when you are greeted by a fantastic view of the Strip and Vegas Valley in front of you. From here, you can turn around and go back the way you came or continue on the trail heading west where you'll eventually face Red Rock. The trail will loop north until you start heading down back down towards the horses. Careful on the descent as there is loose gravel and rocks to navigate. If you do a true loop and not the out and back, it's very easy to get almost 6.5 miles total when you start tracking your mileage from the parking lot. This hike will take the better part of 3-3.5 hours depending on your pace and how much time you want to spend at the overlook enjoying the view. Bring plenty of hydration and snacks to enjoy, but be sure to pick up after yourselves. Happy hiking! #LeaveNoTrace
