This used to be a state park but…read morewas tunred over to the City of Las Vegas when the state budget didn't have enough to cover operations. Since then, it has been a city park. There is an admission to Floyd Lamb of $6 per car. To avoid the charge and to do the loop, you park on Racel Street. There are entrances on Racel to access the South Loop Trail. The loop is actually a large retention basin for flash flood water. It is a 1.7 mile loop on a dirt track around this basin. There are wonderful views of the Las Vegas Range and you can see the Metro antennae on Gass Peak if you know where to look. Coming back to Racel, you see the Spring Mountains to the west. The views of these two mountain ranges is outsanding! The mountains offer the marvelous scenery, but don't miss the desert plants that have been added to beautify the area. Creosote bushes, desert marigold, mesquite trees, and other desert plants make the trail something to enjoy by looking at both the mountains and toward the ground. Roadrunners like this type of dry area and I've seen one hiking the loop. If you look at the center of the basin, you'll see an island. There are two trails--from the north and south--leading to this area where you can have a picnic in one of the covered areas. When I hike here, I leave the loop near the historic area of Tule Springs. If you do the loop and have time, take the side spur to the historic resort from the 1940s on, starting as a resort specializing in 6 week Nevada residencies for people wanting a quick divorce. Enjoy the springs, the animals, and the plentiful trees before returning to the loop and back to your car along Racel. There is a North Loop that I haven't done yet. Since it's cool weather again, I have some time to do it. From Neon to Nature. Go out and take a hike and enjoy our city away from the neon.

Many an early morning was spent running or biking from my house here on the way to Kellogg-Zaher Park, which connects to this trail. I love using it in the early morning before the sun rises and also at night after the sun sets; you get awesome views of the city lights because the trail is elevated in many spots. We were here recently again after a long hiatus since I moved to northern Las Vegas and the trail is just as terrific. Highly recommended for walking, running, or biking--watch out for the bunnies!

We had the mountain all to ourselves when we decided to hike on a Thursday morning last week when the sunrise was at 6:14am. It took us 24 minutes to get to the top. The first half of the hike is pretty steep and I am quickly reminded that I am not in the best of shape. I make sure to bring a hiking stick/cane to help when descending the mountain. Overall it is always worth it to hike to reap the beautiful view at the top of lone mountain.

As Duke of the Bonanza Trail, I feel it is my duty to review. Having checked in only a few handfuls…read moreof times, I was surprised to be dubbed Duke. But then again, how many Yelpers truly utilize this trail? I would say, more than most, less than others. And for good reasons. To be clear first, this is a nice, long trail, especially for Las Vegas. It's wide for both pedalers and pedestrians, paved well, even somewhat scenic. There are numerous bathrooms along the way. You can get some peaceful inner-city miles in without driving far. There is room for improvement, however, hence the average rating. Number one? Most of the water fountains do not work, or if they do, they spit out hot water. This is a public health and safety concern, especially for the desert. Two, dovetailing off the first, the trail is entirely exposed to the sun. No tree or artificial canopy, except for a few short tunnels. And third, much of this runs along the highway, which would be fine if there was a sound and smog barrier like in most cities, but there's none. There is for residential areas! But not for the trail. So, a fine trail for meandering short distance near the parks. A fine trail for a little longer work. But fend for yourself out here when summer hits and visit more remote trails for greater peace and quiet. With a few low-cost improvements, this trail would become more widely used year round.

After 30 minutes of hiking and 7 hours of rock scrambling, I was proven wrong and it was very much climbable with effort and team work. Only 4 miles round trip but feels longer with the full body effort required to dodge and climb rocks and boulders to summit. The views were spectacular. Parking and bathroom provided at the trailhead. Please come and create your own adventure.

Our family loves to come here for the walking trail. The walking trail is a lovely paved path with a few picnic tables, benches and a couple small playgrounds dotted throughout. Dog waste stations and trash bins are also available along the trail. Love that the trail is long and does not cross streets (instead it goes below through tunnels and street over passes). Everyone we pass is friendly and respectful with their dog. Great park and walking trail to visit.

I took my dog and paused for him to catch his breath a few times, so it took just under 2 hours to get to the top. I was more focused on enjoying the trip than racing to the top. We saw a few deer on our way up which was cool. And we encountered an awful lot of horse poop, so watch your step lol. Once you get to the clearing at the top where a few other trails shoot off, you walk towards the right and just over the hill you will see the sweeping view of the canyon. I waited a few minutes for a large group of hikers to leave and then I had the entire place to myself for about 15 minutes. I was very careful and walked out over the rocks a bit to get a better view, but PLEASE be careful because one false step and you will have a long fall below you. I loved how quiet and peaceful this hike was, would totally do it again.

The Trail Canyon Trail is the stairway to Heaven. The most direct route to this stairway to heaven from Las Vegas is US 95 to Kyle Canyon Road (Nevada Route 157). I suggest filling up before the 18 mile drive to the trailhead. In 18 miles, the road nearly climbs 6,000 feet in elevation. The road shoots Northwest toward the end of Kyle Canyon. Immediately past the Fire House, the road abruptly changes direction on a hairpin curve. Before the hairpin curve, you want to keep straight the on Echo Drive. There will be a sign directing motorists to Mary Jane Falls, which shares the same parking lot. A few hundred feet the turn off is to the left. The Trail Canyon trailhead is on the north side of the unpaved parking lot. Please keep in mind that this is a strenuous hike where water is essential. If you forgot to bring water, I recommend stopping at the Mount Charleston Inn to pick up a water bottle. Trail Canyon Trail is a stairway to heaven that requires a workout to reach the mesmerizing views at the top. From the start of the trail which really is the westernmost point of Kyle Canyon to the saddle below Coxcomb Ridge and Mummy Mountain, the trail immediately climbs uphill on a two mile hike that ascends 1,500 feet elevation. It starts off at 7,785 feet at the trailhead to 9,308 feet at the top. To give you an idea of how strenuous the trail is, it is higher than climbing the Stratosphere Tower that stands at 1,149 feet. This is a workout to the sights and sounds of nature in a forest covered with Ponderosa pine, aspin trees, Bristlecone pine, and white fir. There is sufficient shade and logs along the trail, that provide relaxing places to pause and take a breather. I witnessed a few hikers getting out of breath. My strategy was to take timed breaks. I'd walk maybe 15 minutes, sit on a log and set my alarm for ten minutes. These were scenic spots to appreciate the limestone vistas of Coxcomb Ridge, chirping birds, woodpeckers pecking on trees, and the light breeze blowing through the forest. There was no other way around the timed breaks. This was my strategy for reaching Trail Canyon, previous hikes, and hopefully Charleston Peak. Speaking of Charleston Peak, Trail Canyon Trail overlaps the leading two miles of the Mount Charleston Hike. Every mile, I passed a sign advertising the mile achievement toward Charleston Peak. At the top of Trail Canyon, that I metaphorically called Heaven, is the junction for the North Loop Trail. Where Trail Canyon Trail ends at this breathtaking view, Charleston Peak bound hikers will make a left to continue on the North Loop Trail and follow it 6 miles to the peak. When I walked back down to the trailhead a couple hikers asked me if I reached the top. They were talking about Charleston Peak. After this hike, I more than ever wanted to hike to Charleston Peak. Despite the 1,500 uphill gain, this is a hike that is safe. The dangers of steep and slippery hills is nonexistent here. The climb is gradual on relatively smooth topography. On the leading segment where it leaves civilization for the Wilderness Area, it follows a wash on straight stretches with gradual elevation gain. Near the last half mile, it then follows a few switchbacks that conclude at the saddle where the trail ends at the North Loop Trail. The saddle is the spot to take in the beauty of nature. This is one of the grandest vistas of Mummy's Mountain. When you turn your head to the left, there is Charleston Peak towering above the Spring Mountains. Turning your head further are the canopy of treetops extending into Kyle Canyon below. Turning your head all the way are the majestic limestone cliffs of the Coxcomb Ridge. Resting your head, there is a level of calmness of being one with nature in a slice of Heaven up in the Stratosphere.
