Her prognosis was grim at first, but she is exceeding their expectations and is now on to skilled nursing here at the rehab. I was told it is called TIRR, but nowhere on the building does it state this so don't let that confuse you. The facility is easy to find, parking is a breeze and navigating through the building is simple with everything marked so well. During my visit, I was pleased with the cleanliness, attentiveness, responsiveness and overall room layout. She is in a private room with a private bathroom. I'm not sure if all rooms are private. A schedule is given to the patient each night with what is expected/planned for the next day. The goal is for her (and all patients) to get better and stronger, so I like the planned therapy and for her to know what is expected of her to achieve the results needed. I've heard excellent feedback from other people about this place. Everything I have read and now seen/experienced is A+++. My friend even said the food was good. The Houston Metroplex is home to fantastic healthcare and I think this is another representation to that statement. Anyone going through tough situations like this, my blessings to you. Stay strong.

I mention this because if a loved one was in the hospital for something other than a routine/elective procedure and after a lengthy hospital stay and you are told that the doctor is recommending transfer to a Nursing Facility instead of discharging them home, it creates a great bit of anxiety for both you and your loved one because "Nursing Home" is a scary, perhaps the scariest word for an older loved one but we were assured that this was indeed temporary and in the best interest of our loved one and in retrospect, it was the right decision. Their ultimate goal is to rehab your loved one and get them ready and strong enough to be discharged at home and have things ready for them at home (Oxygen, equipment, etc.) when they are. To be very honest, it won't be easy for you and your loved one especially with all the COVID-19 protocols that limit visitation - by limit I mean there are no visitations unless you go outside on the window or use Facetime but you can register to be an "Essential Caregiver" by taking a COVID-19 test, making an appointment to get trained for it, and then making appointments to see your loved one. You are however able to drop off things for your loved one. There will also be times that you will be very frustrated because communication could use some improvement. The problem is that the nursing staff take instructions from the hospital doctor (at least in our case) but don't really know what the doctor's longterm plans are. Your point of contact is the social worker who gets her information from the Director of Nursing who again, may or may not know what the doctor's goal and timeline is. If you call the doctor's office, they might refer you back to the Social Worker and so as time goes by, your level of anxiety keeps building up. At the end of the day though, I can say without hesitation that every single person that myself and my loved one came in contact with there was a dedicated and caring professional who had my loved one's best interest in mind. The rooms were nice, bright, and clean and resembled a nice hotel room. The food was pretty good from what I was told as well. When the time came to be discharged, they helped us set up the medical equipment and other things we needed.

Let me be straight not all nursing staff, those on the 6pm - 6 am to be criticizing, demeaning and unhelpful. They fail to have respect for the patients who are rude. Communication with about 55% of the CNA's Is mostly unfamiliar careful wording is needed for expression. This is called now Avir. The administration is cold, distance, and totally unavailable. For instance, I was requested to submit a sample of my urine. This was a 2 day attempt. First the bowl wasn't very secure, fell in the water. Second attempt was much better, caught what was needed, they failed to be picked up my the 6 pm - 6am, so my 3rd attempt I was successful. Now I have to wait to see if it will be picked up. Another insult I was waiting outside for my 98 year mother to arrive which made me late for lunch. A troop of culinary staff came to my door asking when I would be finished with my lunch, I explained I had received my warmup food and was eating it now. When I finished with my one plate, bowl, and dessert. Called for the pickup, no one showed. Most recently the fire drill was blasting, being from the public sector I am aware of the procedure if I was informed of the drill. Was not informed. A staff member hurriedly past me grabbing the extinguisher. Didn't say anything about a fire drill so I continue on the hallway, as I got into view of the gather CNA's/ maybe maintenance member. One pointed to me saying "why is out". It could have been a better way of communicating to me such as "we are having a fire drill please return to your room" no one told me it was a drill, if someone had said this you me I would have wholeheartedly participate correctly. My linen hasn't been changed in over a week. Asked for a change nothing happened. There're are other incidents I would like to mention I have written to long. Hopefully I have given you a view of what to expect. Oh last observation when you call for assistance in your room, plan on waiting 20 - 30,40 minutes for an answer

Before coming to Encompass I was in Sugar Methodist for 7 days I was intensive care for 5 for days and 4 days I was in coma! The nursing staff is good. Some better than others! The food to me was not good. I lost 20 pounds with my stay! Today I am on iron because I am still anemic. I need another surgery however the anemic prevents that! They meds were continued to be given incorrectly, they broke his glasses and would not replace, they lost his wrist brace that he was required to wear as he came in with a broken wrist. I do not believe he was ready to be released! They want to admit patients, collect their money and move them on. No place is perfect but The Abbey checks so many boxes which were not provided at our previous location. Most of all, both my father and I enjoy just being part of this community! The level of activities and healthy yummy food here at The Abbey is amazing!!! Each activity I have been to, I see the staff engaging with the residents and the staff leading the activity excited to be there and offer this for the residents! My dad's bubbly spirit has returned after moving to The Abbey! The care staff whom I have seen are ready to help you and point you in the right direction if they cannot. They truly enjoy their job and helping their residents! The administration attend many events and know the residents. The are professional and polite. Sadly many assisted living and memory care facilities take advantage of the elderly who are the most vulnerable and silence their voice or twist events and then blame on the residents lack of memory! Selecting The Abbey at Westminster in Houston was a wonderful choice for me. Although you may not be in this area, look at the description of this place for comparison wherever u are. There are several layouts here. I chose one bedroom with 1 & 1/2 baths. Closet is huge. Living area while not what I used to have is lovely and ample. Food that is always an issue is wonderful. There are choices for all meals, substitutions are available, special dietary needs are accommodated and Chef will work with anyone. T he only drawback is that you are likely to gain a bit of weight mostly because the desserts are fantastic. One of the things that mattered to me was how to maintain my physical shape at my age. The exercise choices are unbelievable and will suit whatever you need. There is also Hydrotherapy included in the monthly rent. It's rare to have it and helps me so much. You will have to look up what it is. The moving in process has been as good as it can be. Staff have been so accommodating in this very difficult process. Also, must mention that the other residents here have been kind and welcoming. They all seem to relate to how hard it is to make such an enormous change in these later years.
