I once sent BTS an email asking them if BTS really did stand for better than sex, they cheekily sent back that they could neither confirm or deny this rumour. Every cupcake aficionado knows of BTS and their glorious pink store sitting on Pirie Street. I discovered it a few years ago back at Uni, and it became the perfect place to escape to. You can get a drink and a cupcake (or two) and truly imagine you're somewhere else. One of my favourite parts about the store would have to be the names they give their cupcakes. Generally named after pop-culture personalities you can expect to munch on a Carrie, Scarlett, Mr. Big, Princess Buttercup, or Bridget Jones. There are so many flavours that they rotate daily. There is something for every cupcake fan, and if you like icing they pile it generously high. Thankfully, on the icing note, it isn't too overwhelming, but a light and fluffy version. While at times I have had some better cupcakes elsewhere, BTS wins for having the whole package and a brilliant attitude to boot! read more

Now THESE are some delicious cupcakes! The minis are where it's at- two for $3.95, and packed with just enough velvety frosting to satiate and satisfy. One of today's specials - "Nau" - was a Belgian chocolate mini cupcake with peanut butter frosting, and it was divine. Like diving into peanut buttery layers of edible silk atop a moist chocolate cake. Also, they brew up a solid iced coffee. A friend put me onto this place when I needed to bring something into work for my birthday. Being lazy, I didn't want to cut up a cake, so these adorable cupcakes were perfect! The majority of my co-workers are male. But they loved these cupcakes (and the convenience!) so much that just about every birthday now involves cupcakes. I have to giggle at the thought of my 6'5+ giant of a boss entering this little pink cupcake shop and walking two blocks back to work carrying a couple of hot pink BTS boxes. I prefer the cream cheese frosting to the buttermilk frosting, but they're all decadent and delicious. read more

Woah there - why haven't I been here before? My partner suggested visiting here as she heard they used Mahalia Coffee ... and that's a good enough reason for me ;) The decor is fabulous - everything is pink and black and rather ostentatious ... apparently I matched our surroundings rather well ;) We sat in gorgeous armchairs near the window and had coffee with a mini cupcake. Very reasonably priced, and very decadent - but not *too* much! Mine was Turkish Delight flavoured - can't wait to try more! Oh, and the service was impeccable. There was one made with fresh strawberries on the day that I visited, but I went with the peach option based on a staff member's suggestions. My verdit: moist and yum. One of my friends recently introduced me to BTS Cafe (rumoured to stand for Better Than Sex) and I can't believe that I hadn't visited before. It is located on Pirie Street and stands out from surrounding corperate buildings with its bright pink and black walls. The interior is something special, with high ceilings and beautiful tables and chairs. It feels very Parisienne. Its main drawcard is its delectable cupcakes, which are available in standard and mini sizes. Each of them is named after a well known movie character and are all fluffy, moist and topped in the most delicious icing. They also serve a variety leaf teas, which come in a nice cup and saucer set with a teapot. Their teas are perfect to enjoy with one of their cupcakes and the pleasant ambiance of the cafe adds to the experience. read more

Cupcakes and I don't naturally go together. I am rather tall, big and bumbling. Cupcakes are small, petite and oh-so-sweet. Therefore, I've always been a little nervous about approaching BTS. It serves cupcakes, and looks so stylish and chic. I feel like I'd break the place just by walking past! However when I found out that they serve Mahalia coffee here, not even delicate Louis XIV furniture could prevent me from trying this place out! And I'm now sorry that I haven't been here earlier! Of course, the coffee is fantastic (being from the local South Australian roaster, Mahalia), but the cupcakes are simply divine. I stuck to a small, bite-sized apple & cinnamon cupcake, in all honesty though the richness of this delicious morsel was enough to keep me going for the rest of the day! Something that has always put me off the cupcake craze, is the frosting to cake ratio. I was one of those freakish children who hated the icing and always scraped it off to eat the cake. So the thought of a cupcake with half-a-foot of sugary icing doesn't exactly fill me with excitement. The topping of these cupcakes are not half as sickening as I expected, and compliment the light, fluffy cake below. The staff are exceptionally friendly, and eager to please. They provide amazing service, without being overly smothering. The decor is chic, without making one feel too inadequate. BTS will now become my local coffee-stop - which makes sense as it just across the road from my work. :) read more

Incredible cupcakes and South Australian roasted Mahalia Coffee - it can't get better! ... or can it? Yes! Now that there are two cafes (Pirie Street and Gouger Street) there are more occasions to be tempted. This was my daily coffee stop when I lived in Adelaide and will always get a visit when I'm in town. It's also the place I will take a visitor or meet a friend. There are a lot of Adelaide businesses that have an acronym for a name but this has got to be the best I have ever seen. If you haven't guessed already BTS is short for Better Than Sex café and sells the most amazing cupcakes I have ever had. I was interning at a company in the city centre during my University days and was introduced to this place by a fellow intern. She suggested as a well deserved lunch break she would duck down and get us some cupcakes. First she bought in a list of the kinds they have and from there it was difficult to make a decision! In the end I choose the chocolate cupcake with chocolate butter cream frosting. When it finally arrived in my hot little hand, it was so perfect. The icing was so light and fluffy and didn't have the crustiness you get sometimes if you know it hasn't been fresh baked. Since then I have wandered in myself to the store. It is relatively small and there is only a limited amount of seating. The cupcake cabinet stands pride of place right next to the register but make you get there early because I was there around 2pm and a lot of the good ones were gone. There is also a full range of coffee and tea to choose from and a selection of other desserts. But don't sell yourself short, have a cupcake and you to will see it is in fact better than sex. read more

Don't mistake the lack of a star as a reflection on the cupcakes - they are unbelievably delectable. It's the price of the cupcakes that makes me reduce my overall rating to 4 stars. The cupcakes are great, but at the end of the day they are cupcakes and when 5 cupcakes cost $19.95 and a box of cupcake mix, which makes 12 costs $5... Well you can weigh it up for yourself. It is a nice little cafe though and nice place to catch up with friends, definitely not a place to stop regularly, otherwise you're likely to experience empty purse/pocket/wallet syndrome. read more

This place is a bit girlie but maybe that's why its the number one place for me and my girl friends to catch up - that and the awesome cupcakes. One of my friends and I refer to it as "Paris" (as in "we'll always have...). The cupcakes? Divine. Moist. Great combinations. My favourite is the Bollywood, which is cardamon spiced and lime syrup. I plan to make this review 'short and sweet', a bit like me really... ;) Anyway 'BTS Cafe' is delicious cupcake heaven. The decor is pink, white and black, super girly and oh-so inviting, and the staff are lovely too. Kudos to whoever is hiring these friendly people! Favourite cupcake days are Thursday and Friday. Thursday provides me with my two favourites 'Farmboy' (spiced pumpkin cake with maple frosting) and 'Salty Doll' (something something, caramel and pink salt) *drools* and Friday has the wonderful 'Skeeter' (peach cobbler with maple frosting) and 'Bollywood Starlet' (cardamon cake with lime buttercream). They also serve tea and coffee (hell yeah!) and there are many more cupcakes to choose from, so you should really just get your fine butts down there and shove some creamy cups of deliciousness in your face post haste! You won't regret it, your waistline might, but your taste buds won't. Totally worth it, I promise :) I give it 5 out of 5 expanding waistlines! read more

I know more about this little shop of pink goodness than any person should. In my defence it is right next to the office building I work in, and the classy and fun decor, genuinely friendly service and, of course, the delicious cupcakes make it a rather irresistible spot to stop for a break. It also has the advantage of ONLY serving cupcakes, so you can go there at lunchtime without feeling guilty about taking a table when you are only having a snack. If I am being good, peppermint tea and a tiny cake (or two) hit the spot. If I'm feeling more indulgent, a full size cupcake and hot chocolate is the way to go. Their cream cheese topped cakes are my favourite: for example, The Wolf (chocolate and caramel), The Satisfier (apple and caramel), Salty Dolls (vanilla and caramel) (hmm, is there a theme here?). The menu changes daily and details are on the facebook page. It's worth knowing that BTS cater for functions- a gorgeous stand is available for hire. And in other rather exciting news, a Gouger Street store is being fitted out as I type, meaning that their unique cupcakey goodness will be available on Friday nights and Saturday mornings to market shoppers come July - huzzuh!
