While some of the staff were very nice, and I am not usually one to leave negative reviews, I had an unusually bad experience at brushwood. As a first time pet parent my concerns were often brushed off, and I feel as though I was pressured to spay my dog early. I pursued my concerns elsewhere and come to find out she has recessed vulva, pyelonephritis, and congenital renal dysplasia! The recessed vulva May have been fixed by delaying her spay date, and now I may have to spend $3000-4000 on a vulvoplasty. Disappointed this was not caught by these experts. I have found excellent care elsewhere. read more

Brushwood is awful. Do not take your pets there. They are even worse with customer service. I spent $800 for my dog to be neutered.... did everything they suggested. Fast forward 6 months and my dog's rabies has expired and I was denied a referral for a kitten I wanted to adopt. I just spent $800 on a dog but they wouldn't support me adopting a cat? Got my kitten spayed here a couple days ago but she won't keep her cone on. I had to pay $14 for something I keep having to put on my cat that she slips out of. called to get a refund so I can use the money to buy a better quality cone and not the cheap one with a bad quality string they provided me but they refused. The receptionist I talked to was demeaning, then expected me to travel all the way back there so she can tie it the same as I have been, when she got out of the orginal knot they tied. Won't be taking my cat here for anything again. Money hungry and don't care about your pet. read more

I brought my dog here after he bloodied up his back paw a bit. He got a couple of his nails stuck in a bench as he was jumping off of it. My pup was not in any pain or phased by the incident at all. Because I do not have canine nail clippers I figured I should bring him to the vet to get them cut back to where he broke them and maybe get a bandage to keep on him for the rest of the day. My mom and I stopped over to Brushwood and immediately got a room because it was empty. Because my dog was in no pain he was walking around in the exam room while we waited for the doctor. By the time the doctor came in my dog's back paw was now completely covered in dog fur from the floor as well as the dried blood on his own hair that was already there, making his nails very difficult to see. Without washing his paw at all the vet looked at it for a second and then asked me when the last time my dog ate was. Then told me he'd have to put him to sleep and remove the nail because it was clearly hanging on by a thread. Then he'd give my dog reversal so that he would come out of it faster so we could pick him back up in a few hours. Then he would have to wrap it and we'd have to get a cone for my dog to wear on his head... oh and the nail may or may not ever grow back and may or may not be deformed. I was a bit shocked. First, I explained to him that the nail he didn't mention at all, the nail NEXT to the one he said 'was hanging on by a thread' was actually the one I thought was more damaged. He looked again and quickly said oh yes he saw that he'd actually have to remove them both. My mother asked him if there was a way that we didn't have to put my dog to sleep but just perhaps something local for the procedure. The vet said to us "well, would you want your nail taken out while you were awake?"... so we then suggested that we actually clean his paw off so that it might be easier to accurately see what is going on before making the decision to surgically remove now TWO nails. With a sigh he asked his assistant to clean the paw and he left the room. He came back a minute later and took even less time looking at the paw while my dog was sitting on my lap. Because he seemed to think surgery was still necessary, I kindly asked him to explain exactly why and to show me where the nail was barely attached. I truly was hoping for clarity because I was so shocked that something I thought was so small was turning into such an ordeal. I wanted to make sure that if I was suddenly going to be putting my dog through all of this that I completely understood everything. Thats normal, right? The MOST SHOCKING PART OF ALL is that this vet REFUSED to explain it. He immediately told us that was the way he felt he had to deal with it, and that was it. Now I'm frustrated because I want a solve for my dog's paw but I also deserve to understand the process. I said "I'm sorry that I don't completely understand this, I'm not a vet". He answered by saying he won't know the details until he's in surgery and asked again if I'd want my fingernails removed without being put to sleep. I said I've honestly never thought about it but thats not what I was asking. He then told my mom and I that we seem to be questioning what he thinks is best and maybe we should go elsewhere. To this I replied "if you are not going to explain this to me then I agree, we should go somewhere else". He refused to explain. We left. SO- a couple hours later at a different vet in town the doctor looked at his paw on the exam table, told me she'd have to trim back two of his nails, they might bleed a tiny bit so she'd wrap it in gauze that we could take off in 30min. It was $20 and took 5 minutes with a nail clipper. My dog never bled after this, his nails are fine, he was never in pain. Had my mom and I not asked questions my poor dog would have had to go through completely pointless and useless surgery, grogginess, pain, and had two nails completely and unnecessarily removed and therefore would have been recovering for days. That is animal cruelty. AND fraud against my wallet. Will never go back. read more

The staff here is outstanding 1 of our dogs needed stitches on her side, Dr Joe was on vacation had to unfortunately bring her to hampstead hospital to be seen they wanted to charge me over 1000 dollars for a couple of stitches I called brushwood and spoke with Robin she had me bring her in so she could look at the cut took some pictures and sent them to Dr Joe within 10 minutes he called the office and spoke to both of us and made arrangements for me to come in first thing the next morning to see Dr Lawson to do what needed to be done to stitch her side up. They are by far the best veterinary clinic around they care about every animal that walks in their door like it's their own. read more

The most amazing vet I have ever been to. Not only have they literally saved the lifes of four of my animal's but there staff treats me like family. Recently my cat was seen at the animal hospital and sent home in kidney failure. Not only did brushwood notice my cat was in kidney failure they treated him and saved his life. He had to be at the vet for days and they called me everyday to give me an update. They let me go visit and treated my cat with love and care . I can't say enough good things about them. Dr. Joe is by far the best vet! My cat Mr. Grey would have passed away if it wasn't for Dr. Joe. After four nights with Dr. Joe is finally back to being my fur baby. I have been taking my cat and my dog to Brushwood for 3 years now and it has always been a good expereince. They know my dog who kennels with them and visits for regular check-ups and the occasional issue. She wags her tail and is happy to go even if she is still afraid I will leave her behind. They are always very professional and the Vet will take the time to explain everything in as much detail as you would like. They take the time to also try and help you out if you have a puppy or are a new pet owner, which I was when my dog first came home. They are thorough and true pet lovers, which make me very comfirtable when I leave my dog with them when I am on a business trip. Their prices are also reasonable. Very unprofessional and they discriminate against dogs. A few days ago I called and set up an appointment to get my two dogs fixed two years old and four years old Rottweilers. I called to ask if they would fix my dogs and if they take the friends of animals that are certificates they said yes so I asked them if they had any problems with them being Rottweilers because I've had problems in the past with vets they said nope they don't discriminate they take all dogs so then when I told them that I didn't have the certificates yet they told me to buy them now because I needed to before I came in for my appointment so I purchased the certificates and then two or three days later I get a phone call from the owner I believe the doctor telling me that they do not work with Rottweilers it's good luck finding another person to take them. That was setting such a rude sarcastic way I was completely shocked I asked them if they were going to cover the expenses that I paid for the certificates they made me pay $220 and he laughed on the phone and said no when I was told by the people who work the front desk that they would be OK and I would not have any issues I don't know how a vets office could actually discriminate against a dog especially since I've never even been there with them before my dogs are two of the nicest dogs that you would ever meet and they're already judging them just because they're a Rottweiler I definitely don't recommend this vets office at all read more

I drive an hour both ways to take my 2 year old German Shepard here. The entire staff is amazing. Always friendly. And my dog is a hundred pounds of annoying while he's there. Whenever I have an emergency they always fit me in. No extra fees, no additional charges. They always find the time. My biggest like for them is that they are exceptionally honest. No false diagnosis, no exaggerated medical treatments. No we have to try this and this- and then this and this. My last vet kept my dog sick a year solely to make an extensive profit. I finally got fed up and took my dog to brushwood on a recommendation from a breeder. Not only had my former vet been lying to me about everything. But Brushwood had my dog in the best of health less then a week later. Even now when I go in for visits I don't have that pit in my stomach waiting to hear my bill total because I know everything I'm paying for my dog truly needs. Also you get personalized care here. My dog was on so many medications from his first vet that were making him sick. I didn't know what he could take or what he couldn't. I can't tell you how much time the people at brushwood dedicated to calling specialists that they knew for information. I had phone calls from the vet himself explaining to me why he thought something would work for him or why it wouldn't. He called contacts just to get a second opinion to be certain. My dog went from 8 pills a day to heart-worm and tick treatment once a month. and has never been better. And they don't push anything on you here. No speciality 400 dollar a week dog food. This is the type of business that you want to take your pet too. they are truly honest and hardworking people and they really care about their customers and their pets. read more

I have been going here for 5 years and they never push anything that isn't needed, always thinks about the pet's best interest. Recently my dog got into something he shouldn't and was very sick. They took him immediately and did the necessary x-rays and blood work and ruled out anything serious. They gave my dog what he needed to get back on his feet.They love what they do and have a caring and compassionate staff that isn't out to make a buck, but to help your pet have the best life possible. read more

I took my dog to be neutered on the friends of animals certificate. Dr. Grushman and one of the other female staff member has less than desirable personalities and not sure why he's a vet when he told me a couple of times to keep my dog over there. no bedside manner at all. i was then charged for over weight limit and pain meds that i didn't know i would be charged for til i picked up my dog. my only good experience was Ashley who is a bundle of love towards my dog and a great personality that always made you smile. other than that i wouldn't bring my pet to them again. read more

I've known Dr. Guischard and his staff for many years and they have never let me down!

I started taking my cat to Brushwood when I lived in northern Essex County, MA. I now live 45-60 minutes away, but I still take her there because the quality of care is so high. As others have said, there are no unnecessary treatments or medications, and the care is thorough and personalized. The staff is wonderful, and very patient with my cranky old cat (and with me, her neurotic owner). Dr. Guischard can be gruff, but he is an excellent vet, and he truly loves animals. This place has the kindest, most compassionate staff & Drs. !!! Dr. Joe is wonderful and he treated all our babies well including out poor Cat Louie who sadly failed at only age two. Even though the Dr. wanted to keep him for the weekend to keep in on an IV to try and get fluids in him in the hopes he would rally. Sadly, he didn't. They also buried him in a Pet Cemetery. This cost was Less than a place I had to bring my 5lb 16 year old cat to. I was disappointed that their main goal was to charge as much as possible no matter what was happening with my cat. Dr. Joe et al is warm and wonderful and I wish I were still close enough to be able to bring my babies to him. read more

I have written a previous review of Brushwood but need to update my experiences. I moved to Salem/Atkinson about eight years ago and Brushwood was located only several blocks from my home. It was a natural fit from location. My experience with all of f the staff I have interacted with has been extraordinary. All of the staff is A number one, personable, helpful, compassionate and makes your visit a convenient and efficient one for me and my Cats. I have had several terminal health issues with my Cats and found the Doctor and staff to be incredibly understanding and compassionate. My Cats mean a lot to me and without question I can say everyone at Brushwood helped me through some difficult times. I have one remaining Cat who suffers from reduced Kidney function. Brushwood had been awesome in supporting me with medical care, products, and treatment. My Cat has survived beyond 3 years, well past statistical estimates beating the odds. I attrtibute much of his life extension to the fantastic care and treatment regime provided and guided by Brushwood. I would reccomend to anyone with a pet Brushwood as a great place to take your pet for chech ups or more serious problems and have confidence they will give you great advice, great medical care, and show you the compassion that is so important in tough moments. The Doctor has taken personal effort and time above and beyond for my Cats over the last 8 years, treating me special. You will will be very happy to be a patient at Brushwood. read more
