Now that we're living in The Catskills, my quest to find that similar market prototype I grew to love in Westchester, continues. I had forgotten hubs and I came here before during one of our bi-annual trips to The Catskills. Recently though, when I searched for produce markets near work in Highland, Wallkill View in New Paltz popped up within a short driving distance. As you drive past all of New Paltz bustling shops and restaurants on Main St, you'll soon approach a sleepy farmland area overlooking Mohonk Preserve in about 5 or so minutes. I've been hard-pressed to find a market that tops my favorite one in Westchester and checks all the boxes. Wallkill View grows and sells a nice mix of produce the area has to offer. And when veggies and fruit aren't grown on-site or in season, they're sourced from elsewhere. Unlike other farm markets that operate only Sat+Sun, Wallkill V. is open everyday. Well...almost. These folks shut down for Christmas and throughout the winter- reopening in March. Prices are about $1 more than what I paid down in White Plains- but hey... I get it. Service is great though.

How can you put a sign denoting a discount, when you don't even have the original price marked??? More than half of their plants and produce had absolutely no prices. Their bakery items looked decent for the most part, but banana bread for $12? I checked the ingredient label for the individual slices of banana bread for $1.99, and would have tried it, except that bananas were listed close to the end of the list. Put prices on your stuff. Otherwise it seems that if you have to ask, you can't afford it. Either that, or your prices are whatever you choose to charge at that moment to that person.

Last year, they had the BEST warm apple cider donuts - and their hot apple cider was the real deal, not that watered-down stuff you get everywhere else. It was the perfect combo for a chilly autumn day. I was really looking forward to making Dressells Farm a regular weekday stop this fall for that specific treat, but it's a shame they only offer it on weekends. Hopefully, they'll consider offering the hot cider and fresh donuts every day next year so more people can enjoy them!

Although we've consumed lots (LOTS) of wine, we've never tried mead and with Lydia's review to back us up, we tried some and bought some too. (Which would be enjoyed later on in the day with cheese from Dancing Ewe and seckel pears from Migliorelli's, both of the Rhinebeck Market.) Don't pass up the chewy, delightful pretzel rolls! We bought several to give to our friends in NJ and they were a BIG hit. (Seasonal cranberry / apple and also sea salt. Also found at the New Paltz market.) There were fewer farmers at this market on this October Sunday but the produce vendors there had top quality items. And the friendly woman at the info booth at the end of the market was offering samples of home baked apple crisp as well as tastings of local applies. We stopped in yesterday to pick up some tomatoes, which are in season now. Heirloom tomatoes are $6.00 a pound, and cherry tomatoes are $6.00 a pint. I really want to support the local farmers, but these prices are outrageous, obnoxious, and downright insulting. Other farms are $3 - $4 per pound. I cannot support price gouging.

I have to credit Taliaferro for almost single-handedly increasing my vegetable consumption from that of a picky child who eats only corn (I jest, sort of) to me claiming, last night, that I could be a vegetarian if for some reason I needed to... except for beef. I love the challenge of cooking seasonally with their offerings for the week, and they give you a push in the right directions with their newsletter, which lists recipes for some of the more unusual offerings each week.

They provided a box or bag for the fruit which is all priced by the pound. There was no additional fee for the box. I picked 10 peaches, which came out to $22. On entry you purchase a $5 voucher which can be redeemed towards any purchase which I think is great. After picking peaches I enjoyed sitting on the spacious patio with an ice cream and a walk up to see the farm animals. If you're going for an animal encounter I will say these animals seemed to enjoy distance, but were still lovely.
