Stopped in early Saturday evening after a short road trip to Othello Tunnels. My boyfriend was ravenous and raves about the sandwiches here, so we decided to swing by on our way home. He got the roast beef on sourdough with everything but tomato. It was a pretty solid sandwich, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. I wanted the shrimp with avocado which they ended up being out of, so I opted for the smoked salmon instead. Okay, now this sandwich was definitely worth the hype. Smoked in-house, the fish tasted super fresh and there was a lot of it on my toasted sourdough. I paired it with fresh sprouts, iceberg lettuce, and tomato, making for one hell of a sandwich at $7.99 - I'll definitely be back for this, along with Bruce's other seafood offerings. So, why the three stars? Service here is SO excruciatingly slow. There were six deli attendants working, all of who despite acknowledging our presence, decided that prepping tomorrow's salads was infinitely more important than serving customers. I attempted to order, gave my boyfriend my order as I needed a bathroom break, browsed the store quickly and returned only to find they still hadn't taken our orders lol. They also didn't bother calling our names out once our sandwiches were ready (why ask even?) so our food was just sitting there for awhile. I get that Bruce's probably has a lot of seasonal hires, but the overall experience suffers if your customer service is this lacking. read more

This place looks like an old general store with a covered in patio that acts as the dining room. Very quaint. Nothing fancy. The meal was fantastic. $14.99 gets you a delicious salmon steak, veggies, a baked potato (mmm, it's been so long), coffee or tea, and a desert (apple crisp with whip cream or ice cream). I went to Bruce's today because I wanted to try their famous smoked salmon sandwich. However, by the time I got there they were sold out (but I will go earlier next Sunday haha). I did buy their Colzone and their ham and cheese croissant. I must say the Colzone was so darn delicious and huge! Bruce's is a grocery store plus deli. They have variety of great produce and home made breads. I heard their in house smoked salmon is the best but it was sold out. Overall, I had a pleasant experience and had a great lunch there. 4 stars because the at the store are not very helpful at all. The deli staff members are good but the store staff seem to ignore you at all costs possible. I will go there for the food since I live close enough. read more

I have purchased a bakery item on three separate occasions and each time I was met with disappointment. They were very dry each time...thereby not appetizing at all. Unfortunately I never really write negative reviews or have had a bad experience. Especially when my parents lived across this location for over 17 years. I decided to support local small business instead of going to IHOP or Denny's for breakfast. I wish I did. Walked in. Noticed newer renovations and great seating area. We ordered the soup, ham and cheese crossiant as well as my boyfriend ordered a couple desserts as they were visually appealing. The issue wasn't really the food. It was the woman at the counter. She made the mistake of giving us the wrong dessert for one order so I pointed it out and my boyfriend asked her for the correct one. Once he requested for the right slab of cake, she started rolling her eyes and saying nasty words and sighing louder than a Boeing 757. Not while she was getting the correct piece of cake, but while she was looking at us. The other Caucasian customers she will smile and give them extra effort. When we just walked up to order she was already scowling. I felt she is very racist and this sort of behaviour was unacceptable. I am usually not the type to keep quiet, especially when we've done nothing wrong, except to choose and dine at this establishment. But my boyfriend just told me to sit aside and he paid, so we ended up paying for an extra dessert cause of her mistake. I mentioned what happened to my parents and their neighbours who told me that they feel she's racist towards Asian as well as other nationalities. Unfortunately my father had incident with the same lady who is the owner and he hasn't stepped a foot for over 5 years. My mother only goes in dire emergencies as the closest supermarket is 12 min drive away. I've been to so many restaurants or different cultures food and in different countries as well, but to feel like your a piece of crap on the bottom on a shoe when you've done nothing wrong is not a good feeling. I will never go back to this location even if I'm starving. I've mentioned this horrid experience to many of my friends as well as fellow business owners at Granville island. I am born and raised in this city which makes me more upset. Even after 37 years, I've never experienced such racist actions towards me. NEVER. Spread the word and love. Not hate. read more

Best seafood store in BC period. Family owned for ever and owned by fishermen and their family. Nice spot for lunch, dinner or breakfast if you want. Nothing fancy but that means great food at low prices so it has a regular crowd every day. Tons of choices and the Salmon chowder is a must try. The only knock is they have a lots and lots of staff working but need sombody to manage them as they are a bit lazy. The "kids" preping food and serving all have a way of not jumping to service way about them. If they can train the staff they would do far better. read more

I love eating breakfast here! It's a good old fashioned country market and their salmon chowder is bomb! It looks a little off putting sometimes but just close your eyes and enjoy heaven by the spoonful. As far as breakfast goes, as long as there is bacon in it then it's a 10. I'm telling you I've been coming here for years and travelled to a lot of places and this bacon is the best. I absolutely love Bruce's food. Especially the sandies. I have been visiting my whole entire life from when I was a child spending my money on Jojo's and Jones Soda and now, hangover breakfast sandwiches, smoked salmon sandwiches, delicious bakery items and salads. My only issues with Bruce's Market are firstly, the obscene prices. (Emergencies only for groceries!) I have also been over charged many a time (noticing after leaving the store unfortunately - also the smoked salmon sandy is worth the price) Secondly, the customer service is almost always terrible. Good luck getting anyone helping you to crack a smile, they act as if you are an inconvenience to them and it's rather unsettling. It won't stop me from returning, however I know better now than to bother making any conversation or trying to make anyone smile as it's completely useless, lol. read more

Bought jumbo prawns, giant scallops, a lobster tail and a crab cake... seriously awesome! The scallops were very tender and tasty, prawns and lobster while frozen, cooked up tasting fresh with fresh garlic butter with lemon juice, I was in heaven The crab cake was awesome, perfect blend of tasty spices, peppers and I think onions? Everytime Im in Maple Ridge I have to stop in. The smoked salmon is the best that I've tasted. I love how they catch and smoke it themselves. Some of the staff need to work on their customer service skills but I will keep coming back. read more

Somebody stop me, this is a Perfect example of what a neighbourhood market should be. Food in the deli was great. Lots of specialty foods, organic and locally grown. A tad expensive, but what the heck. Was very disappointed to find they'd removed their bike rack (only held 2 or 3 bikes, but it was secured to the ground) and threw it out back, unsecured on some gravel next to some bushes - perfect place for thieves to take the rack and any bikes or have some driver back into it. Was pleasantly surprised to see a LOT of bicyclists out back on the covered patio with their bikes parked against chairs and tables (unfortunately), as well as in trucks - all eating foodstuffs purchased at Bruce's Market. Bicyclists eat a lot, therefore, they spend a lot. Not very nice for pedestrians or others who don't ride bikes and want to sit out back because tables/chairs are being used as stands. The bicyclists are happy to move them, but they shouldn't have to. Come on Bruce's Market - get some secure bike racks in areas that people who ride their own bikes (and spend a lot of money on them too at local stores), can see them. We have a lot of bike thieves in our town and many in the bushes in Albion now too. For a place that caters to organics and locally grown foods, you'd think they'd be happy people ride their bikes to and from their establishment, instead of throwing the bike rack in the back 40. My Husband I dropped into Bruce's Monday January 25th 2016 about 2:15 pm, did some shopping, I came across a basket full of what seemed to be a pretty good sized chocolate bar containing almonds and cherries. the clipped on price tag said the cost was $3.29. I thought perhaps they were on sale, as we discussed this, my husband I decided to purchase the chocolate bar. When I got to the til, the cashier told me the cost was $17,? I can't remember the exact price. I mentioned the price tag clipped to the basket. the girl agreed it was there, I asked about the scanning code of practice...... however, she had to call the manager to see what she had to say. When the manager arrived, she was told of the situation, and found a tag listing ALL the chocolate bars partially hiding under the basket.... this listed the price of the chocolate bar I was wanting to buy. She told me she was not going to sell me the chocolate bar for that price. I asked about the SCOP...... she agreed there was a law in place, but this tag was out showing the correct price and completely ignoring the lower price tag that was clipped to the basket. In plain words the manager had her cashier tell me I was NOT getting that chocolate bar for $3.29... so Bruce's market save probably 13 dollars in difference , and they have lost a customer, for good.... the money is more important than the customer, who did not want it for free... just what the listed price was for. read more
