After being at the Bruce Wine Bar several times since 2019 and most other comparable restaurants in the area, we used to say it's the best joint in the hood BUT. My wife just had her b-day dinner with some girlfriends and it was the first lousy experience. When a borderline rude waitress tells them they only have the table till 7.30 before they sit down. It's Thursday night and the place is not packed ? One way to put a damper on the party to start the evening. After tossing the menu on the table, rude waitress asks " do you want wine ?" I guess she is new and untrained or should not work in the service industry. Overall dinner was ok this time but previous times was very good. The kicker was when no one actually showed up to take the table with the mentioned time limit and at this point the place was half empty. We will go back for another try, hope to get a waitress with more personality then my gold fish. read more

Well here we are 10+ years later. My wife and I stopped in for lunch the other day after hearing they were closing at the end of the month. The place was packed and we shared a $40 pizza. With only one server, the service was slow and the food was a little overdone. They will be missed as the restaurant has become a landmark but I understand they may reopen at another location. read more

A cute spot in Thornbury with decent service and excellent food. I am from Toronto and I enjoyed my meal at the Bruce far more than any meal that I have had in the city, in recent times. The menu is concise, creative and approachable with mains in the $40 range. I ordered the fish, and on the day of my visit, it was trout (served with wood oven roasted local mushrooms, sautéed leeks, spinach, French lentils, celery root purée.) It was PERFECTLY cooked to medium-rare with a lovely, crispy skin. The accompaniments were equally excellent and I enjoyed every mouthful. My dinner companions ordered the pizza special and "beast" special, respectively. Both were impressed when their selections. We did not order starters but did share two desserts, the affogato and the deconstructed chocolate tart. A+. I appreciated that Seedlip was on offer and I enjoyed an icy, tart, non-alcoholic cocktail. Because we were heading back to the city that same evening, we booked a 5 o'clock dinner reservation. There were quite a number of families with very young children at that time. The loo was clean but not entirely private being right near the bar area. The restaurant states that it is nut free (which was great for my dining companion) but I believe that one of the dessert items may have referenced walnuts, so always good to inquire. The restaurant is located behind the TD Bank, off the small Main Street. There is free parking behind the bank/ restaurant. Well done, Bruce Wine Bar! I look forward to a return visit. read more

We were biking this picturesque town and asked a rediculously happy local couple where to eat. They pointed us to the Bruce Wine Bar. They said the food was great, on Tuesdays they have a 2 dollar uncorking fee, and that the LCBO was 2 blocks away. The pizza here is as good or better then the top stone/wood oven, thin crust places in Toronto (Libretto, Brooklyn, etc). They managed to brown the cheese, without burning the crust and have a nice spicy oil to compliment the dish. My girlfriend and I split a fungi pizza and an extremely healthy cod dish. The atmosphere, farm to table, dietary concerns, and charm were all added bonuses. read more

We have been to this wonderful restaurant twice now and have never been disappointed! Finally a place in Canada where they know how to make pizza! We also had different dishes from the main menue and from the daily specials and they were all delicious. And to know that all the ingredients are local makes the food even more special. Thankfully we live close by and will be able to go back! And yes, as stated in one of the previous reviews, the only thing the might consider changing is the air conditioning upstairs. It's even very cold in the summer time, don't forget a sweater or a jacket! But that is a minor issue, maybe some people like it that way, so I give the restaurant a full 5 stars! First time here. If you want to hear the live music you need to be on the second floor. They don't tell you that when you reserve. Ordered roasted beet salad. Very subpar. Had the hummus appetizer. Way too much salt. Was told a new staff person prepared it. Should not have been charged but I was. Has fennel sausage and rapini pizza. Too doughy. Waitress said it was her least favourite pizza. Love the farm to table but with picky pre-teen and teen palates, sometimes hard to navigate but menu offered a good selection for lunch. Pizzas are fantastic: lovely chewy crust and great balance of toppings. Cheese board had the favourites Gran Padano, Brie and Blue but sublime honey and fruit chutney with crostini was well worth the $24. Reservations recommended, and seat in the lower section is great for warmth and kitchen watching. Upstairs is nice for larger groups and lounging. We had only one night in Thornbury to see the Scandinav spa and we ate here twice! Its that good! We were surprisingly blown away and I highly recommend people check this place out. Food is deee-licious! One of the best pizzas! We had the wood oven made funghi pizza (twice) - bonus for consistency - (I've had some great dishes elsewhere and when I came back to show others it wasnt the same, but not this place, this place is consistently good so far). We also had the Cod which had every bite filled with different yummy flavors. We also had the cheese board with some great canadian cheeses, with refreshing local honey and a riesling jelly. Tuesday nights were 2$ cork fees which was an added bonus. Each waitress was friendly, attentive and informative, and if they could not answer our question about some of the cheeses, they got another waitress that did. Their recommendations were great. The ambiance was lovely, the music was great and not blasting so that we can actually have a great conversation over dinner, casual cosy rustic style. Seems to support local foods. Delicious, fresh food, good people and ambiance, relaxed and comfortable - what a great find! I do not think the place was over priced at all (as one reviewer said). I took my dad here for dinner a few weeks ago and we loved our food. We had the mushroom/truffle pizza as well as a tomato-based one with cappicola, if I remember correctly. Both were really good - the crust was done really nicely and had a lot of flavour. The star of the meal though was the roasted beet salad, which was absolutely delicious and has inspired me to try to recreate it at home. The dill, honey, beets and goat cheese were fabulous together. We were there early on a Friday evening and managed to get a table for two upstairs without a reservation (we got there right at 5:30), but it filled up very quickly so I would advise reservations for dinner, at least on the weekend. Be warned that there was live music upstairs, which can make it a bit harder to talk to your dinner companions, but I think that the music is only on Fridays. read more

Not good. My group had lunch at Bruce Wine Bar on a weekend. The waitress took 45 minutes to bring out our appetizers! This delay would have been acceptable if other customers were also waiting for their food. But everyone else all got their food before us. We watched as other patrons finished their entire meals, pay the bill, and leave (even though they came in after us). The main course, pizza, finally arrived after almost 1 hour. The cheese was creamy and tomato sauce fresh. The apps were okay in terms of flavour, but portion sizes were too small. But overall, the food was not worth the long wait. No apology from the staff. They left the bill, walked away, and didn't even come back to collect it. So our group left. Overall, I can't recommend Bruce Wine bar because of the service. Update: I've yet to receive any apology about our terrible experience. I'll definitely not be going back there ever again. read more

Poor service! Booked online for a Saturday night at the latest time available. They then called the day of the reservation and requested that we come in earlier which we did. We were seated next to a family with 6 children who were badly behaved and loud. There were many other seats available so we asked to move which they accommodated but not sure why we were seated there given all of the other options available. Our party would rate the service between indifferent and just plain bitchy- our waitress just couldn't wait to get us out of there. When we'd finished dinner, she never brought dessert menus- just asked us if we were done. No... we wanted to look at the dessert menu. We had ordered a bottle of wine for dinner and then a couple of us wanted wine with dessert so she reluctantly brought out the wine menu for us. For a wine bar, they have a really poor selection of wines by the glass! Food was acceptable- pizza was soggy and under seasoned, steak tartare was under seasoned. The lamb was adequate as was the braised short rib. The desserts were ok. My biggest beef was the unfriendly service which should have been much better given the price of the meal. People who appeared to be regulars and knew the staff appeared to get much better service. Would not return! read more

Overall it was good but not outstanding. The service was very good. Strangely we both had the same starter and entrée. The tomato/buratta salad was mostly greens with perhaps 3 cherry tomatoes cut in half. While it was tasty it was not as expected. The braised short rib was a generous portion served with a mashed/crispy potato (like a croquette almost), the carrot puree had no flavor and there were greens on the plate. For desert the flourless chocolate cake (large portion) had good flavor. I had the desert that is served with fruit and a puff pastry - I can't recall the name but it was good. An OK selection of wine by the glass. Lots of pizza options and I noticed that's what a lot of diners were ordering. In case it matters to you - they have some high tables for dining including one upstairs that's a communal dining table ... I went to the Bruce Wine Bar for brunch with some friends. The restaurant opens at 11am on Sundays. It was quiet when we arrived but thirty minutes later started to fill up. Our waitress was courteous and patient as we tended to get distracted from ordering since we hadn't seen each other in decades and so there was lots to catch up on! I ordered the Ginger Toddy which was a great drink while the others ordered wine or beer. For my main course I had the burger with cheddar and fries. It was all delicious and the portion was reasonable. The fries were just right (not too greasy thank goodness). Two of my friends had the pizza which won favourable reviews. My other friend had the curry soup special which she enjoyed. Dessert followed which we shared. We had a pie (I'm afraid I can't recall what kind of pie) and the doughnuts with melted chocolate on the side. It was all good. The restaurant was clean as were the restrooms. This is definitely a restaurant that I will go back to on my next visit. read more
