    Strawberry Picking

We love a trip to Brown's Farm every year! It's just a 90 minute drive from Jacksonville and it's one of our favorite spots to take the kids for u-pick strawberry picking.

As far as strawberry farms go, this was lovely. The u pick farms I remember as a child were dusty, searingly hot places. Devoid of shade, flowers and anything pretty. The plants clung, wilting to the ground, vainly seeking solace from the sun's rays that pierced through everything. A layer of clay colored dirt dusted all, making you choke and cough and wish you anywhere but here. Not so, Brown's farm. My teenagers even enjoyed it (albeit grudgingly). It was a perfect Spring Day. 70 degrees with a breeze, even at 1pm. The rows of plants neat and tidy, bursting with moisture and vitality. The roadside stand was tidy and stocked high with green goodness fresh from the fields. Flowers bloomed among the rows, inviting the pickers to saunter through and find the gems resting beneath its green leaves. $1.50 a pound. We picked too much because the berries were so beautiful we were compelled to pick them, to marvel at its color, its shape, imagining how sweet they'd taste. So, if you're near Gainesville, stop by when strawberries are in season. Give your children a positive farm to table experience.

Our family had a great time here. Everyone was friendly, there were tons of strawberry's (March 9th 2019), and they had other delicious produce available at their stand. Strawberry's are $2 /lb when you pick them yourself. We went around 11 on a Saturday and there were maybe 100 people there. It is a decent sized field and there was enough room that people weren't tripping over each other. This place doesn't have games or rides, it is what it advertises itself to be: a farm. When you get there they give you a 5lb pail you use to collect strawberries, and when you check out they have bags you can use to bring them home but suggest you bring your own container.

You might see tractors roll up through out the day bringing fresh picked broccoli or cauliflower. The carrots and potatoes are also grown right here, berries are local; and more I'm not thinking of for sure. The flavor and quality of the produce will knock your socks off!! County Line makes me seem like a better chef than I am, because everything tastes so good!! The fruit - berries, citrus, mangoes, bananas, you name it! They have several refrigerator coolers as well, where you can get herbs and lettuces. There are some locally made goods as well, local honey, barbecue and hot sauces, etc. The people are knowledgeable, kind and wildly efficient. The most amazing thing is their prices. The cauliflower is at least twice as large as what's sold at the grocery store; it tastes ten times better, and costs half. I have doubled the amount of vegetables we're eating weekly for less than I would have spent at the grocery store, and it tastes so good! Driving out each weekend has become a little ritual for me. I slow down, enjoy the drive, select wholesome, fresh for the week, and most weeks I get to see one of the farmers there unloading fresh veggies from their tractor and I get to thank someone who is integral to feeding my family. I'm sad when my schedule occasionally doesn't permit me to go. Good to know: bring cash, they don't accept cards. There is an ATM onsite, but course there is always a fee for using standalone machines. Such a special place, I wish them everything good.

I love walking around, checking out the booths, and finding new local treasures. One of my absolute musts now is a matcha drink from Honey Nitro + Cold Brew. I had never tried matcha before, but a friend recommended their version with vanilla or lavender, and oh my gosh, it was creamy, smooth, and totally addictive. I seriously didn't know I could love matcha this much! Pappa Thai's summer rolls are another go-to. They're fresh, flavorful, and honestly hit the spot every single time. Light but filling and perfect for walking around with. And I can't forget Proud Pickles, they're such a fun little stand, and I'm absolutely obsessed with their items. Sweet, tangy, spicy, you name it, they've got it. I'm giving 4 stars only because I wish there were a few more vendors but I understand Gainesville is a small town. But honestly, it's still such a lovely experience and totally worth checking out if you're in the area.
