Yep, that place was Brocky's, and to say that they served a pretty decent breakfast is an understatement. I even broke from my routine of simply having bacon and eggs and dived in for a pancake and I must say I was pleasantly rewarded. Those pancakes were magnificent. My friend ended up having the poached eggs, but I really couldn't get any more than 'yep, there good' out of him (though if they weren't I would have been sure to hear about it). Oh, and they also gave us a massive pot of tea with a side of water, with made the fact that they had simply dumped the tea leaves into the pot not as annoying as it normally is. This is definitely a place that I would recommend to people down this way.

The whole place just yells "breakfast", although perhaps if I'd stopped by at noon it would have screamed "lunch" as well. You don't feel crowded, though: the place is quite large, with high ceilings, and you're not packed in like some breakfast cafe nooks are. The ladies running the show were friendly, took our order, and promptly brought out some tasty coffees and a great brekkie. I had a big bowl of baked beans with smoked ham and a slice of toast (one of my favourites); they had a few types of beans in there, mixing things up. My wife had mushrooms on toast - in fact, one giant, grilled mushroom cap, which she reported as being quite good. If you find yourself on the west end of the Great Ocean Road you could do a lot worse for breakfast.

The spacious room is neatly decorated with local artwork and giftware (mostly for purchase). Behind the barista is a wall of tea varieties - I'm a coffee fan so I can't comment on these but the selection is huge. Little treats adorn the front of the coffee counter, tempting caffine pilgrims as they pass. I think they do food as well, but I only had coffee so I'm not 100% sure. From my infrequent visits to Warrnambool, I have found really good coffee in only a few places around the town and surrounding countryside. I am happy to report that Cafe Lava is in that distinguished company.

It's obviously close to if not heritage listed perhaps, built 100+ years ago, with those amazing high ceilings, vintage chandeliers, skirting, period furnishings and decor. Makes me wonder what was here before it was a restaurant. I felt so comfortable. My partner and I sat in a large booth with cushioning, so we had room to spare at our table. I ordered a $22.90 Chicken Parmigiana, usually my first choice in new places. The menu seemed quite vast. Along with traditional Italian style dishes, like pizza, pasta, meat and chicken dishes- there also looked to be a few Asian influences with things like garlic prawns, satay chicken, spring rolls. Along with these choices there was also a steak menu, seafood menu, vegetarian options, and of course desserts. Something for everybody by the looks. When my meal came I was a little wide eyed at the fact it was one of the smallest schnitzels I've received. I dined somewhere else a few days ago and received a fairly small schnitzel, but this breaks the record. Literally I think it would've been around 10cm by 7cm sitting on a large dinner plate. My chips and salad were served on small bowls to the side. Luckily for them if it wasn't for the fact I wasn't that hungry tonight I probably would have shunned them. One positive I must note is that the chips we received were lovely thick cut chips which I thoroughly enjoyed devouring. They were almost a meal in themselves. I should have taken some photos of my food, but unfortunately I didn't as I didn't have my phone on me this time! Overall I did like this place for what it is. My Danish was delish and is up there with one of the better tasting pastries I've had. Crispy, lots of layered, and tasty. My chai though was not good and a big letdown. Maybe because they are a coffee joint, not much love given to my chai? Very disappointed. Not sure but I do notice a big crowd here and everyone ordering coffee. If I am back in the area I will definitely pop in for more of their baked goods and maybe will try the coffee too. Decor wise I thought it's not too bad. Open space inside but quite confusing to know where to order, although people are lining up against the corridor, the pastry cabinet is on the other side of the queue. Well, this place was quite nice and it certainly had a decent selection to chose from, but unfortunately there was more chocolate/caramel flavours than the ones that I generally prefer (such as the fruity ones). They also had quite a large selection of toppings, including small, bite sized cholocate bars. I guess the only thing that I didn't like about this place was that the staff really didn't seem to want to be there.
