I heard a rumor that the breaded mushrooms here are really good so we decided to grab an order on our way to pick up a pizza this weekend. Holy crap, they are the best breaded mushrooms I've ever had! I'm not a big fan of mushrooms in general either. Will definitely be coming back for those and maybe try some other things too. read more

Brown's Chicken - Breaded mushrooms. They don't come with any dipping sauce but we didn't need any. - American Near Me - Carol Stream, Illinois

I haven't had Browns Chicken in YEARS!! I needed to eat something at work and I have been wanting fried chicken for a long time! So this popped up on Grubhub when I was looking for chicken places so I said heck why not try it I haven't had it in a while! The pieces are huge and the taste is awesome. It has not changed and I have not had it since I was at least 10 years old and I'm 52 now. read more

Browns Chicken! The corn on cob be trash and they sent this to me all the way across town in a food delivery! Crazy work! The corn is completely disgusting and I let the manager know. He tried to pretend that I am the only one complaining about the corn. If one corn is this bad then the rest of it is too! read more

The Carol Stream Browns is the best! All the employees are great and the chicken and sides are always so good! Fried mushrooms are cooked perfect and the chicken always tastes so good, never tastes like old oil. Also love the onion rings and green beans. Best chicken around! read more

Being in lock down at home isn't very fun. But the upside to it is we get to go out for carry out more often. We frequently drive by Brown's when running errands. We kept noticing and commenting on their banner out front that read "10 pieces of chicken for $10". Now 10 pieces is too much for the two of us but we couldn't pass up the bargain. So glad we tried it! 10 very fresh and sizable chicken pieces fried just right. When we got home it was still piping hot! The service was friendly and they practiced social distancing by extending the credit card reader on an extension rod for you to insert your card without contamination. What will they think of next? read more

This review isn't really about the food itself. Brown's Chicken is our family's favorite fried chicken place. The chicken and sides almost always hit the spot. But THIS particular location of Brown's Chicken is just run very poorly. We've had a series of missing items on recent orders. Earlier in the year they forgot one of our large sides. Annoying, but it happens. Easy enough, we called the store, they made a "note" of it, and said we could get it on our next trip. The next trip came and we mentioned being owed a side. They said "yup we have the info here so we'll include it" ... but they forgot. We called and right away the employee ("Ga*****") told us "yea sorry, we messed up, its right here on the counter we forgot to include it." We live too far to go grab it, so again they apparently "made a note" for us to get the side on a future order. On our most recent visit, we called in our order. My wife spoke with a female on the phone whom she later found out was the manager. She mentioned to her our missing side from the previous orders, the date of the transaction, the name of the employee that day (who we spoke to and was supposedly making a record of our missing item) and asked for it to be included. Right way, you could tell she wasn't going to give it to us. She said she would "try" to find the note and we'd talk at pickup but she needed to find the paperwork before she'd confirm we'd get the item. Sure enough, we go to pickup our food and the manager refuses to give us the missing side from the previous transaction. She says the employee "Ga*****" didn't make a note in the proper way, and since protocol wasn't followed she wouldn't give us the side. Now, if this was just a regular employee not wanting to defy the protocol, i'd understand. I would have been annoyed, but I'd understand. This was the manager herself. She obviously could have made an exception....especially since it doesn't make sense to punish the customer for the employee not doing something right. And again, we were claiming ONE missing side (to go with our $30 order), had the date of the transaction, had the employee's name, etc. We weren't trying to get a free dinner. We wanted the one large order of cheesy potatoes they had messed up for months. I know this sounds petty and stupid. But it's very frustrating that it would have been SO EASY for the manager to make it right and instead just stood there denying us. It's going to be a while before I let us order from here again, even though I do enjoy the food. read more

The chicken tasted good but way too much breading. Most of the 40 pieces were taken apart on the plate and I'd say 70% was coating and skin. Sorry Brown's, but that was my last order. Christmas Eve no more. read more

used to be... Brown's used to be our go to chicken place - better than KFC. Great chicken- regular or spicy - great sides - best cole slaw in Chicago - crispy fries - good stuff! what happened?? ugh! poor window service in Downers Grove - chicken tasted left-over; new coleslaw recipe -tasted a week old; indescribable gravy on the mashed potatoes- poor. Used to be... Bye Brown's. Hello Popeye's and Chic-Fil-a. read more

This is by far the best chicken restaurant in the Chicago land area. This place is head & heels above Kentucky Fried Chicken & Popeye's. This place has more of a home cooked feel to it. This particular location is a lot bigger than some of the other Brown's Chicken I have been to. This one has a very big dining room. Most of the other Brown's Chicken locations are mostly for catering or take out & they have only a few seats inside to sit down & eat. This one has a lot of seats to sit down & eat. Their meal combos make it a good option to come to for lunch. The chicken here especially the chicken sandwich is some of the best & tastiest chicken around. Probably the one thing that makes this place stand out from other fast food chicken restaurants is their sides. Their golden brown mushrooms are delicious. Some of the other sides that are just as delicious are their macaroni & cheese, their biscuits & their mashed potatoes & gravy. If you're not looking for chicken they also have some good seafood options. They have three different seafood meals but the catfish or the butterfly shrimp was the tastiest. Overall the location is convenient & the food is tasty. I would definitely eat here again if I was in the area. read more

My Dad & Uncle have been raving about this Brown's location for months! I finally accompanied them a month ago & I have to say I was impressed by the variety of foods on offer. My Dad got chicken tacos, my Uncle chose a dark meat chicken meal, and I had the steak burrito dinner. I LOVE authentic Mexican food & I honestly wasn't expecting much. Imagine my shock when our food was brought out (yes, served at our table, unlike many fast food restaurants) and the most gloriously delicious steak burrito full of fresh cilantro (my fave!) was placed before me with a generous portion of the most delicious salsa verde I've had in years! I swear the friendly cashier must have read my mind. My boyfriend and I ordered food for pickup last night (steak burrito & 8 piece dark meat chicken) and it was just as amazing. Despite picking the food up a bit late & a 10min drive home, everything was delicious. The chicken was perfectly juicy and crispy, not the least bit soggy. It's hard for any restaurant to get everything right all the time, but Brown's Chicken is a safe bet with a wide range of options, all of which they pull off very well! We will definitely make Brown's one of our regular "go-to" stops in the future. read more

I've never actually dined in here but I always order food from here to take home and share with the family. Their recipe for their fried chicken is delicious, like it has that home cooked style - definitely different compared to your usual KFC or Popeye's chicken. I've also tried their fried fish and it's also pretty good. I have yet to try their other dishes, and they have quite a few to choose from. Definitely well worth your money if you buy food from here. :) read more

Ove 20 minute wait at the drive thru. No apology given. Extremely disappointed in the biscuits which not only didn't taste right, have once again gotten smaller and were not brushed with butter. I've noticed a while ago that they've gotten much smaller at some locations but, come on! One step away from miniature is RIDICULOUS. I've given this location several chances, since the extremely disappointing "chicken and rice bowl that they used Mexican rice in (not the description on line). I won't be back. read more

I used to love Browns and every once in a while I will stop in when I see one. I just ordered some chicken sandwiches for people at work and they were no good. They used to make an awesome sandwich but now they are nothing like before. The chicken breast is way smaller and thinner and the lettuce used was brown, wilted and had holes in it. The tomatoes were tiny and over ripe. I had to take all that off to eat the thing. The experience was a total bummer. For shame Browns Chicken - you are not even trying ! read more

BAD EXPERIENCE!!! I placed an order online; picked it up to only find that the whole order was incorrect. Ordered the 10pcs family dinner and received only 8pcs, all breast and wings. The other three items were not even included in the bag. Called them to let them know and the lady I spoke to told me to come back in 10 minutes and they will redo my order. So after 15 minutes i went back and waited for another 15mins in the drive thru to find out my order was not even ready. So I asked if I can just get a refund and the same lady tells me that they're too busy right now. So I said I'll just wait for the order. She gives me my order and as she was walking away from the car she turn around and with an attitude say "Sorry". So unprofessional and uncalled for!!! This will be last time I ever come here. read more

It makes me laugh when people with a healthy sense of self-entitlement get all huffy and give bad one star reviews for mildly bruised egos or minor inconveniences from minimum wage service workers. Why get pissed off when $20 feeds 4 semi-piggy people? Relax! Anyway, Brown's Chicken is a Chicagoland based chain that hasn't had much traction outside of the area, perhaps b/c of some bad press years ago related to an incident at another location involving murderous psychopaths that eluded justice for a decade ("Brown's Chicken Massacre" in Wikipedia if you're morbidly curious). It's really too bad, because it tastes better than a lot of other fried chicken from chains I've tried around the USA. Brown's uses a recipe of a buttermilk coating fried in a neutral tasting cottonseed oil, which makes for super crunchy and less greasy chicken coming out when it's freshly made. It's fast food, so make sure to wait for the freshly cooked stuff and you won't be disappointed by soggy chicken that's been sitting around in its own grease under a heating element. It's a regional chicken style and Brown's will even sell leftover chicken by the box at a big discount for less picky folks that want to save some dough. I find the non-chicken items standard fare and rather unremarkable except for the tasty fried mushrooms, but others seem to like them. Brown's does a hefty catering business and seeing boxes of Brown's chicken, pasta and sides at events was a common sight growing up in Chicago. "Brown's Chicken, it tastes better!" If you grew up watching TV around here, you just sang the theme in the same way the commercials did (yes, you sure did, just admit it). It's one of those local Chicago things that people familiar with it--even the out-of-state traveling gourmet types or the unreasonable one-star yelp reviewer types--will go back to time and again, b/c it's kinda always been around tempting us in the background. Check it out, why not. read more

Not much good to say about this place -- the hot dogs were sub-par, the place was empty even at lunch. Maybe this is the place for chicken, or catering, but it's not the place for a beef or hot dog. Yikes. I'm definitely going to send them the bill for my bypass surgery, because this was the greasiest fried chicken I've ever encountered. My arteries are aching just from reminiscing about my meal. I feel like this is the kind of place Dr. Nick Riviera would have told Homer to go to in the episode where Homer was trying to gain enough weight to get on disability: Dr. Nick: "be creative. Instead of making sandwiches with bread, use pop tarts. Instead of chewing gum, chew bacon..." Bart: "You could brush your teeth with milkshakes!" Dr. Nick: "Hey, did you go to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College, too? ...And remember, if you're not sure about something, rub it against a piece of paper. If the paper turns clear, it's your window to weight gain." This place would have me wearing a moo moo in no time. No thanks. read more

Breaks my heart that I see a fried chicken place with less than 3 stars. Simply because I love fried chicken. But anyway, went here randomly for lunch because I got a coupon in the mail and wanted to switch up the normal routine. My dad and I split an 8 piece chicken for like 8 bucks I think. I added on cheesey mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and onion rings. Total was about 15 bucks. Chicken was great. Skin was delicious and you can see the juices ooze out of the chicken. The coleslaw was alright. The onion rings were eh but I wasn't expecting much going in with those. Was a little disappointed with the cheesey mashed potatoes though, probably should have went with normal gravy. This place is fine I suppose, a little scary looking but the staff is pretty friendly. And they have free sauce too if you ask. read more

Tonight I waited 20 minutes for my all dark meat order. There was a small crowd standing around when I got in to order, so I guess everyone was waiting for something! So I would have given 1 star, but this place has catered some family gigs at my house, (I only allow it if we get a tossed salad with the chicken and beef), and they have had super service! The food was hot when it was delivered and they set up everything! So like the previous review said, you might not want to eat here. Think about it for catering your next event though! read more

As most have said, this place in fantastically greasy. The fried chicken is actually chewy, which is weird, to say the least. My parents always used to order Brown's, and I was never really a fan. The best part for me was the mac and cheese. The fried mushrooms are also good. I know they changed up the menu a few years ago to include things like burgers, dogs, and beefs, but it's still nothing special. Another thing about this place: service is just not very good. I don't know how they are in business, because it takes them forever to complete a simple order. Maybe the catering is keeping them is business... IDK. There are much better options in the area, in my opinion. read more

I keep hearing about crispy chicken at Browns but every time I've tried it it's been lukewarm and flaccid..... Service both times I stopped in was on the poor side of acceptable for fast food restaurants. ...the Geneva location had better service but the same terrible food.... I can get past the service, but I can't figure out how these guys stay in business when it's such bad food. Seriously, just in this immediate area there's Krispy Krunchy Chicken, Popeye's, Culvers, and *KFC that all do fast food chicken better. (In KFC 's case it's barely better but at least good enough in a pinch) .... if you want fried chicken and don't want fast food there's Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket and a dozen other chicken places that do great chicken.... read more

The food is great if you can get it ordered. The accent of the person that takes your order is not understandable. It took the lady 6 minutes to tell me they had no chicken. I am not being rude, however, when there is a complete language barrier, I must think poorly of this business and not return. maybe you sign on the restaurant should state what language the person taking the order is speaking, then I can take six months to learn her language, so I can order some food. I have to wonder what country I live in now. read more

We felt like staying in tonight. Neither my wife nor I felt great today - headaches and general tiredness. We decided delivery was the best option. I didn't want pizza and she didn't want Thai - so we decided to try Browns chicken delivered to our door. Now, I'm a Popeye's guy (Cajun please) so I was skeptical. All things said and done, the price was good, the food was good (and warm), the delivery guy was really nice and quick. Would it rank high on my list of favorite chicken meals? Nah. It was good for tonight when simple was king. Will we eat it again? Most definitely! I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but 4 is more fair than 3. read more

I've been a Brown's Chicken fan for years. Many have closed in recent years so when I am driving by one, I will usually stop because I don't get to eat Brown's very often. Our order was taken and filled promptly. The corn fritters were huge and delicious. The biscuits were delicious. My son said the chicken tenders were just ok. To me, they looked a little under cooked because they were not a golden brown. I purchased but have not yet eaten their dutch apple pie. It is half price, only $2.50, on Sundays. It is made by another company, not Brown's. The restaurant was clean and properly staffed to handle both the drive through and walk-in orders. read more

Good Food (OVERALL). However - VERY, VERY EXPENSIVE. We went for take-out on a Sunday afternoon and we were the only patrons in the place. On our way home, we actually felt like we had been 'robbed without a gun', we joked in the car about how we felt violated and how we could have spent between $25-$30 LESS just about anywhere else (Rosati's, KFC, etc.) and gotten about the same amount of food. Had we known ahead of time about the prices, we would have never come here. We spent over $50 for what amounted to a few boxes of chicken, 4 "sides", and 6 bisquits (bisquits do NOT count as sides and are .79 a piece). I also bought an Italian Beef (separate) which was over $5. The beef was good, but I've had better and much larger for the same price range. - Chicken = GOOD. 4 out of 5 - Mashed Potatoes = GOOD. 4 out of 5 - Gravy - GOOD. - Mac & Cheese = Flavorless - I've had better at hospitals. 1 out of 5. No flavor, literally tasted like cardboard. - Mostaciolli = GOOD. 4 out of 5. - Bisquits = OKAY. 3 out of 5. Just okay. KFC's are much better and fluffier. - Italian Beef = GOOD. 4 out of 5. Just could have been larger. Overall - VERY EXPENSIVE. The food was good, but we would not return, unless there was some kind of special coupons. It is a shame because for decades, Brown's chicken was a staple place and my Italian grandmother (who died years ago) would RAVE about Brown's Chicken. read more
