Been following them on Instagram for a while and finally got up to the University District Farmer's market to try their take-home ramen kit. Long story short? It was about $35 after tax and tip and sadly... I have to say it was not worth it.
I didn't look at each individual item in the kit before leaving the market (because they just give it to you all packaged in a brown paper bag) so I wasn't aware of the size. The amount of broth is pretty skimpy for two bowls! I've had take-out ramen for ONE from a restaurant that gave me as much broth as Brothers&Co did for two people.
When you get home, there's a bit of assembly. You'll need to boil water for the noodles and heat up the broth. There's a separate additional seasoning that you can add to your broth if desired. We tasted and felt like the broth was already pretty salty/balanced and didn't need more seasoning, so we opted to only add about a teaspoon. You also want to heat up your protein and veggies.
The cooking instructions for the noodles are solid, and you get well cooked noodles that aren't gummy or overly soft.
The poached eggs were probably the best part, though I recommend taking them out of the fridge at least an hour before you want to eat them, so they aren't cold. Hot broth can only warm up fridge-cold eggs so much.
The vegetables we got included turnips, carrots, and some greens. I normally like turnips, but these were pretty bitter. The greens and carrots were fine, but nothing to write home about. It didn't seem like they did a whole lot to season them, other than salting and charring.
The chicken was solid, but again, nothing amazing.
Overall, I felt like each component was just... fine. Nothing amazing, but the vegetables and broth kind of clashed. It wasn't a harmony of flavors in my mouth, but rather just lots of noise. And the amount for a dinner for dinner seemed a little on the skimpy side. Neither my husband and I were thrilled with what we got for the price.
Honestly, I'd rather do take out from a restaurant and not have to worry about cooking individual ingredients myself. Also ramen take-out provides you with way more broth and noodles.
It pains me to say it, but I don't think we'll be back :/ read more
