If you haven't visited Randall's Seafood since he took over Cpt Avery's you're missing the boat!!…read more My husband had already been there for crawfish (only place we buy them) but I wanted a tour. We decided to try the frozen soft shell crab to take home and make poboys. Honestly my expectations were low. Boy was i surprised! We picked up Cartozzos poboy bread from Macs Grocery and I'm here to tell you, NOLA got nothing on us! They were amazing. Not that expensive either. We also picked up some dressed rabbit and I smothered it in gravy. I admit I was disappointed it came from China so i probably won't buy it again, but truthfully, it was delicious. Oh, and the crab stuffed mushrooms...delish! Randall's is always friendly, helpful and courteous. They have a super variety of fresh seafood and we highly recommend you pay them a visit. I promise you will find something you like. It's so nice to have a local market that truly appreciates your business!

Let me start off by saying I LOVE chicken cracklings. Being from Mississippi, we don't really have…read morespots that sell them fresh like Louisiana does. So whenever I'm passing through, stopping at Billy's Boudin & Cracklin or Randall's Cajun Foods is a must for me. I went to Randall's today. About 5 months ago, I stopped in and the cracklings had clearly been sitting for a while, they were tough. I explained my concern and even offered to pay extra just to have a fresh batch cooked. After going back and forth, they finally made them fresh, and they were exactly what I wanted. Fast forward to today, I called ahead and specifically asked for fresh cracklings. The young man on the phone said okay, no problem. I walk in 5 minutes later and there's already a bag waiting. I asked where they came from and she told me they were cooked that morning. That was an immediate no for me. If I'm spending $21 for a pound, I don't want tough, sitting all day cracklings. Go ahead and put those back. I ended up trying the boudin balls, big mistake. You could tell they had been sitting too. At that point, I didn't even have the energy to go back and forth or ask for a manager. Honestly, it should be a given. This picture is pepper jack boudin ball. Look how dry it is . Needless to say, I won't be back.

Cox's is a small, family-run, grocery store with the best meat market in town. Despite the many large grocery store competitors around town, the locals remain loyal to Cox's because of their Southern hospitality and quality products. From the moment you walk in to check-out, the staff are eager to help and answer any questions. On our first visit, we felt very welcomed as we took our time to browse the store. Hot foods are available most of the day, breakfast biscuit sandwiches in the morning and then typical lunch food fare(fried chicken/fish, meat pies, boudin, boudin balls, sausage links) for the rest of the day. We were surprised to find fresh, homemade cracklins for $16.99/lb. A majority of the hearty bite-sized pieces had a good meat:skin proportion. The cracklins had a nice crunch and seasoning, but not too spicy. (Most natives are used to the spicy seasoned cracklins from south La). There is an extensive selection of packaged specialty meats and foods (seasoned pork chops/pork tenderloin/chicken/ribs, stuffed chicken, certified Angus beef, smoked beef patties, twice-baked potatoes) and it was hard to select a few choices because everything looked deliciously mouthwatering! We grabbed a few of them to cook up at home- duck wrapped in bacon and chicken stuffed with crawfish dressing. Catering options are available too, just let them know in advance. The rest of the store is similar to what you would find in the typical convenient store with snacks and beverages, including some local brews. With the Mardi Gras season upon us, Abita Mardi Gras Bock is in stock too! I saw a small display of various jerky flavors and local jarred goodies like fruit, jams, and seasonings. Remember to visit Gene Cox's Grocery & Meats the next time you can't decide what to make for lunch/dinner. You'll be sure to find great food here should you need a little snack or a meal. The carnivore in you will surely be screaming to buy all the specialty meats. And as a rule of thumb, eat and shop local!
