Nice to be out at a reasonable hour, supporting the arts in a chill location! It was a young crowd, everyone having a good time and relaxing on a weeknight. Would definitely check it out again, reasonable prices let you take a chance on an unknown. Constructive feedback would be that the black box had seats that could have been spaced out a little more for the crowd and the lighting looked like it was hurting the performers' eyes. read more

A hidden gem in Brooklyn! I came to see "A Crucible: A Puritanical Celebration of Witches and Turkeys" after being invited by one of the cast members I met at Shukette. The small venue was packed with a high-energy crowd, great music, and sketch comedy that had real heart and bite. The cast (Danvers Onions!) served up a Saturday Night Live vibe with a Beetlejuice twist--absurd, sharp, and super entertaining. One line from the show really stuck with me: "Onions don't cry." And in my view, they laugh with tears of joy. Accessible location, food options all around, and a bar that opens before showtime. Don't miss your chance to laugh, think, and feel like you're part of the scene. Highly recommend! read more

I know many blackbox theaters closed during the pandemic and that it's getting increasingly difficult to support the arts so I'm happy to be out here watching shows at BCC. The upstairs has some unique loungey bean bag vibes but downstairs is where I watched some improv and stand up shows. There is no cell service down there, which is kind of nice so you and everyone around you is forced to be hyper present. Since so much of improv and comedy is about feeding off the energy of the audience this really does make a difference. The community that comes out to these shows is eclectic, goofy, and fun, which is what gives living in NY it's texture. I hope to continue supporting the local arts scene here and in blackbox theaters around town. read more

The show was not at all what was advertised, and felt like we were the butt of the joke because absolutely nothing about the event said amateur improv skit show, but said Love Island Parody Musical. I do not believe any cast member has ever seen Love Island, and perhaps only two, maybe three of them have ever done improv before this show. You also cannot advertise musical in a city with a strong musical theatre culture to simply not have music. Not just no musical, but I don't know what the DJ was standing in the corner for, they did absolutely nothing other than play a single intro track and a single outro track and we stared in silence for the other 20 minutes of the show. The highlight is that we did laugh a good amount, but not because it was good, but because it was bad. Like, uncomfortably bad. My friend asked me twice if they were serious or if this was an opening act to the show we were there to see. Perhaps it could be called Brooklyn Beginner Collective because these folks are so close to beginner status they are not yet funny. It did not help that the bartender got my order wrong twice and I just took the drink instead of wasting another. read more

Philip Markle is very rude and won't give you a chance to grow if your first show doesn't sell enough tickets. He is actively stopping hungry comedians from progressing just because of money. Plus he's been overly critical of people's sense of humor and their shows posters. An insider has even said that he doesn't pass on submissions based on the quality of the show, but purely based on what mood he's in. If the company is really about no one being cooler than anyone else, like he claimed in an interview recently, this behavior is not okay. It's really a shame that there are comedians out there who just love performing and have such a drive for putting their stuff out there and this is one of the few outlets who will provide great resources and yet he's just shitting on their dreams. This place goes head to head with the old UCB theatre in Manhattan. The performances have the feeling of punk rock DIY spontaneity, down to its no-frills performance space, with the polish of heavy hitting comedy improvisers. The performers aren't afraid to take risks and more often than not they payoff, and the shows are so varied and diverse that the whole experience feels inclusive. While you can buy tickets on Event Brite, you can also buy them @BCC without paying a fee. There's a well stocked bar, with prices that won't break you. They even have non-alcoholic beer if that is your thing. The surrounding area has a ton of great restaurant options. It's worth coming here for comedy no matter what neighborhood you are traveling from. read more

I love the open ass mic on Tuesdays.... If it is on the calendar it is happening. I went once without checking the calendar and was very disappointed that they were closed. The next time I planned to go I texted the number on their website and was told to always check the calendar to know what is happening because they work hard to keep it up to date. If you like raw expression ( mainly comedy ) this is the spot. It is rapid fire with comics testing material in slots of three minutes. There is a full bar with really nice bar tenders.... Not the hipster chill type the amiable hustle type. This is my ideal spot for general entertainment but also showing visitors NYC. Love love love! read more

They have a ton of classes available and the hosts are always so funny and nice. It's a very casual spot, low lit, and they serve drinks at the bars upstairs and down. read more

BCC hosts an improv extravaganza called the Fun and Dumb Festival. I missed most of it because I got sick after overexerting myself in the heat or getting some kind of virus that made me exhausted. Fuck getting older. The festival was dope. I dropped in on a workshop taught by Philip Markle, the artistic director. Took his workshop -- the guy is visionary. Trained at Chicago's now-defunct Annoyance Theater, he brings some pretty irreverent but highly engaging improv attitudes that sometimes buck the improv orthodoxy. For example, he thinks it's fine if improvisers choose to do away with the voice of reason (a/k/a straight guy) / unusual person dichotomy that you find throughout improv like some zombie plague of cliches. Everyone in a scene can be weird and he explains how to make that work. That was pretty cool. The workshop was packed with a ton of other cool stuff too: how to get specific, how play with your food and not rush the scene, staying playful (which he calls "Fuck it + Love it"), and an equation for comedy (believability and surprise), and playing through your character's emotional worldview. It was pretty jam-packed and helpful reformulation and update of prior improv lessons I've had. I wish I had had a chance to check out their other workshops too, but my illness (read: was it just getting older and more tired?) prevented that. Honestly I've never had a bad experience in any of the workshops or classes I've taken here over the last couple months. I assume the others were dope too and know a ton of people who had nothing but good things to say about the other workshops they checked out. Philip is also responsible for making up some cool names for their class and show locations. These include the Pig Pen and the Dog House. All you proud ethical kinksters hiding in plain sight will rejoice. I see you with my eye of Mordor -- and I approve. :) Also: there are all these nonchalant and entertaining signs about affirmative consent in their locations to emphasize that there are actually reasonable boundaries, that you have to talk to people and get consent before you get all handsy, and to be reasonable in your consumption of drugs/alcohol so you don't become a drag on everyone else's good time. Helpful reminders for all of us -- to be sure. And in classes, the rule is: don't touch "squishy parts," which is hilarious to hear and I think makes sense. Few people mind a pat on the shoulder (got your back), but I don't want my cheeks groped by someone I never gave consent to in the first place in a random class I'm paying for to learn about improv. If I wanted sexual roleplay, well, there's no shortage of that via dating apps, yea? Strikes an appropriate balance. If you're an improviser in NYC and you're not checking out BCC, you're probably being left behind in terms of development and skills. Your loss, because when you encounter these BCC-trained improvisers you might not understand what's going on. The only thing you'll be left with is a distinct impression that someone trained them better than you were. read more

I took Milly Tamarez' Stand-Up Class and this is hands down the best Stand Up Class in New York City. Other classes have like 20 people in them and all you do is perform for two minutes. The ones that do have 12 people are like $400+. This is almost half the price AND a way more intimate classroom with an actual curriculum that helps you build your stand up. By the end, you could potentially have 30 minutes of material as you are continually writing. Such a great class and Milly was an INCREDIBLE teacher. Not a lot of places offer people of color let alone WOMEN of color as instructors and this class was such a breath of fresh air from usual comedy spaces. read more

BCC is by far my favorite comedy theater in New York! Their shows are more exciting and experimental than others' and their improv classes are very fun. They have a curriculum that gets you moving and gets you out of your head. I loved taking Level 2 here and will be taking more classes in the future! read more
