There was outdoor areas with lighting, but a tad too cold out. Cute areas though. They were pretty busy as well and luckily we got a good table. Wait staff were friendly, pace of service was a little slower than what I'm used to. Had to hail someone down quite a bit, but overall food was great. We started out with cocktails because there was a special, happy hour going on. Potted Devon crab with avocado guacamole and chicken liver parfait. Not sure why I expected the Devon crab to be hot.... but it was tasty. I craved a couple more pieces of toast. I got the duck leg confit with citrus sauce and my friend got St. Austell's Tribute Steak and Ale pie. The duck was delicious. Perfectly cooked, sauce went well with it. The Dauphinoise potato, I wanted more so badly. My plate was cleaned except for the bones. The steak and ale pie was not bad, my friend enjoyed it. We finished dinner off with their pistachio soufflé. I asked what was recommended for dessert, never had a pistachio soufflé before, and it was rich and sweet. Offset by the chocolate ice cream, which had a slight bitterness to it. Perfect combination. The table next to us got the chateaubriand for two. That looked amazing and had my mouth watering. If I'm ever back in the area, I do plan on making another trip hopefully.

This place definitely delivered. We sat outside in their pleasant garden. Only downside is it's not south facing so wasn't in the sun. We got a bit chilly after a while so we moved to one of their tables with a heater. Much more cosy. Service was very friendly. They brought some water and offered biscuits to our dog (always a winner). Food was excellent. The beetroot and burrata salad was particularly tasty and beautifully presented. Potted shrimp was also very tasty. It gets 4 rather than 5 because it is a little expensive. Worth it but still a bit pricey for a pub. We would definitely return if we were in the area as there were a lot of delectable sounding items on the menu.

An Oasis!…read more A veritable feast for the eyes, and the soul! Not one for folk you like an all-you-can-eat buffet, but the menu was to die for. I sat outside in the corner by the river and the back of the house, and while I waited for my meal, a little trough containing assorted olives and nuts was placed in front of me. I ordered a nice red, and it came suitably warm. The starter was braised fennel with Mango andmixed leaves. The main was salmon fillet on crushed new potatoes with creamy leeks, capers and tomato, and with my Espresso came 6 handmade petit fours including caramel swirl, truffle, and orange chocolate. Anyhow we were really impressed and very much enjoyed the lunch 3 courses for £20 in a very clean and classic dining room on sunny saturday afternoon. The bream and the steak were superb. Pleasant service and reasonable priced. I would recommend if you are in the area. Also Matlock is beautiful.

Good to see the place full on a Saturday night and I hope they continue to do well. Very clean facilities and a bar upstairs. Worth a visit.

Peterborough has been crying out for somewhere like this for a long time with the closest comparable restaurants being Stamford or Cambridge. Do not come here expecting microwaved "two meals for £10", Clarkes is serious about good food. Clarkes wouldn't be my first choice of restaurants on a night out purely because it is somewhere you should make an effort for. If you are looking to impress when dining out, bring your family and friends here. The menu is constantly changing with some interesting ingredients. The restaurant and service could be a little more welcoming, but those would be easy issues to rectify.

A beautiful building with a fascinating history. Now a restaurant, The Old Siege House is so-called…read moredue to being the very same building in which the Siege of Colchester took place, the siege which brought an end to the English Civil War in the 17th century. Bullet holes and other partial damage is still visible outside and inside of this restaurant from that siege. But the building is even older than that event, it was constructed late on in the 15th century and still retains nearly all of it's original features including stained glass windows and fireplaces. And as if being inside a building of historical significance wasn't enough, the food is bloomin' marvellous, too. The menu is generally made up of modern European style options but what gives The Old Siege House some bonus points is the imagination and creativity put in to the meals created here. The presentation is great and the taste is even better. After some generously sized starters I was struggling to decide which one of the five or so meal choices, which I had narrowed down to, to choose from. This was a problem I'd be only to happy to take on again. In the end, I went for the Tournedo of Pheasant (pan fried pheasant stacked with red onion marmalade, smoked apple wood cheddar and prosciutto with butternut squash mash and veal jus) - oh yeah, that's how I roll. This wasn't a choice I regret. Lovely. My lady-friend's veg-tastic meal was also terrific - the Asparagus Florentine (grilled asparagus, spinach, toasted brioche and poached duck egg smothered with smoked apple wood cheddar sauce). We both loved this. My dessert of profiteroles smothered in white chocolate with vanilla ice-cream and the lady's créme brulee of strawberry and basil with shortbread, both hit the spot. Although no one was playing while we were there on a Sunday evening, there is a beautiful Grand piano by the entrance in the bar area. The layout of The Old Siege House makes it possible to accommodate some larger tables for groups but, also, a lot of smaller, secluded tables while keeping much of the floor open. No one need sit practically adjoining the next table, there is enough room in between for your own privacy. It was a reasonably quiet evening in the restaurant so service was expected to be quick and it was. It was also friendly, courteous, efficient and knowledgable (on the wine list, soup of the day, specials, history of the building etc). All in all, a thoroughly lovely dining experience and should I be in Colchester again I would hope I'll be coming back here. TTFN, Ian
