I recently had the pleasure of touring Brookdale Chatsworth, as my father will soon be in need of assisted living. The experience left me with a heartwarming impression. My mother was in an assisted living facility (non-Brookdale) so I am familiar with the different types of communities out there. The staff at Brookdale Chatsworth truly sets it apart. The personnel is not only professional but also very kind and compassionate. Their dedication to the well-being of residents is shown by the way they interact with each individual. Residents are treated with the respect, and the staff goes above and beyond to ensure they feel valued and cared for. The facility maintains cleanliness throughout. The common areas, living spaces, and dining room was consistently spotless. This attention reflects the staff's commitment to providing a safe and hygienic living space. One of the standout features of Brookdale Chatsworth is its bright and welcoming atmosphere. The facility maximizes natural light, creating a cheerful and uplifting environment. All the resident rooms I toured were exceptionally large compared to other communities. I observed the residents enjoying many different activities tailored to their interests. Not only do they have in-house events, there are many outings that residents can participate which I am sure, makes for great memories, socialization and connections. It's evident that the combination of a positive environment, caring staff, and enriching activities contributes to the well-being and happiness of residents. We finally got our Mom moved out of this facility. This facility has consistently gotten worse. The food is substandard. The care is substandard. The management gives great lip service but side-steps most requests for assistance. It does no good to complain or present a grievance, even to corporate. Lots of people leaving here for the aforementioned reasons. I wouldn't recommend leaving anyone at this place! read more

My 95 year old father was at Brookdale for 5 months before he passed away. He was also there 10 years ago for a short time recovering from bypass surgery. He had a wonderful experience. My father always tried to attend all the activities, bingo, exercise class, arts & crafts, as well as happy hour & the ice cream social. Marla, who helps lead the activities, always made my dad smile. He would light up when she came to say hi to him. Everyone treated my dad like family. He enjoyed the staff who took excellent care of him. It gave me peace of mind that he was well taken care of. Communication was excellent, starting with the front desk, with Rose, April & Brenda. They always had time to chat with him & greeted me by name with a smile. When I needed something, I could call them & they would try to help. The caregivers, Raymond, as well as the med techs, Kris & Erlinda, as well as others were kind & communicated issues about my dad & tried to solve them with me or with the head coordinator, Cheriz. Whenever I had concerns Cheriz would always listen & take action. Nathan, Director of dining services, would always work to help me coordinate my dad's special diet. He would always come out of the kitchen to talk with me or check on my dad to make sure he got the correct meal. Helen, the director, was also very kind & supportive. When an issue would arise she would be willing to talk about it & solve it. I wish my dad would have been at Brookdale longer. I will always have a warm place in my heart for Brookdale & its wonderful staff. read more

I read a lot of negative reviews about Brookdale that were posted years ago and still decided to check this place out for my close relative. They were super friendly and accommodating while touring. We talked to the ambassadors, ate in the dining room, visited several times before pulling the trigger to secure an apt. Brookdale is a nice apartment complex for elderly people who are active, healthy and are active to come and go as they please. The affordability is also an allure since so many other places are well over the price they charge. BUT...the second your loved one goes downhill and needs extra help, it's a completely different experience. Below are the accounts over the course of a year of our loved one living here. We interacted with all of the employees, management team, nurses and ambassadors. Our loved was semi independent, could walk, talk, eat without any extra help needed. They slowing morphed into early signs of dementia: *the front team at desk are mean, anyway you slice it, they are annoyed, rude, and disappear frequently leaving the elderly unattended to. Phones will ring and not be answered, anyone could walk in or out, no security at all. *the food is okay, but your loved one must have the patience of a saint because the wait time is so long and the kitchen team will just ignore them. The kitchen is understaffed everyday. *if you opt to have your food sent to your room, be ready to get a heavy charge for this service. *if medication help is needed, the nurses do not watch that the pills they hand out are swallowed. If you have a loved one who hides medications, they will charge you for a service that is unsupervised. *the ambassadors are fake friends. If they like you, your life is fun and you feel welcomed to attend all of the activities Brookdale hosts. If they don't like you, they talk about you, they give you mean looks. It truly feels like Jr High and the badge they wear gives them a sense of superiority. *The air conditioning/heating unit is old and rarely works. If you have an apartment that faces the sun, you are in a hot box everyday. The refrigerators they provide are a joke, ice box is non existent. *they have an unhealthy mosquito population that swarms in the doors once the hotter climate starts. Residents get eaten alive and they don't fix the problem. It's worse in the garden area. Our loved one & their visitors would get bitten 10-20 times a visit. Brookdale was not concerned about this or the West Nile virus that was going around. *as our loved started showing signs of dementia, they did not help. The staff actually took time to scold them each time they did something wrong. Over time money, jewelry, clothes, tv, & cell phone were "missing". Claiming they searched the trash but they can't catch everything that is thrown away. None of these items were ever recovered. Yet the staff knew it was thrown away? Tips: get Scan, especially if your loved one cannot drive. Do your research, there are better places and this Brookdale does not have a memory care facility. If your loved one needs memory care in the future, they'll have to move into another place. Find a place that offers both so it's a smoother transition when there comes a time to move them into memory care. And most importantly visit your loved one, often. They have residents that reside in Brookdale that haven't had one visitor come in during the past 4 years that they lived there. read more

Working for this company has been a wonderful experience due solely on the amazing residents I have had the opportunity to work for and the handful of staff who are kind and compassionate. Unfortunately compassion does not go far in the company especially amongst the kitchen staff where up until recently I took pride in working in. The kitchen crew is broken into middle school-like groups where staff constantly nitpick and gossip making cruel remarks calling other members of staff, "Fat, Stupid, or Lazy." Kitchen crew has also been seen recording other members on their phone specifically to gossip about their work as well as recording the interior of residents rooms to show other employees how dirty the residents keep their room. Staff has also been overheard mocking residents talking about their smell or lack of motor skills when filling out menus for kitchen. When other members of staff have complained of this behavior they have been outright ignored, staff members would deny and lie about the allegations, or the person reporting these actions would be threatened. This place has consistently had toxic behavior that people turn a blind eye to and as much as I have enjoyed working for the residents I could not further willingly work for a company where employees practice such behavior and supervisors allow it. Along with threats within the kitchen I received a text message threat from a coworker as well that was from a untraceable phone that I reported to management. Nobody responded to me and the people responsible for it are still employed with no repercussions. I advise anyone considering residency at this location to steer clear until they can find a better suitable staff that actually puts the needs of the residents first instead of those of workers they favor. read more

My Sister comments on how good the food and activities available are. Also, the most reasonably priced in the area. She has made some great friends there. read more

This is a P.O.V from a worker. I worked in this place for almost 2 years . The residents are amazing but the staff is horrible . It's always dinning against care staff , this place is full of drama I never felt so over worked in my life. The management couldn't care less about no employees only about themselves. I never seen at least 1 management to go help around when we were low on staff! I would even offer applications to management for new hires and the would NEVER call ! And the safe would always complain about how low staff we are! I left this horrible place because I couldn't take it of how unprofessional they were,They talk behind your backs and twist your words around! If you ever try to apply DONT EVEN TRY! They will rob you blind with all the undisclosed extra charges. Very misleading and shocking. They charge you for everything. The annual rent increases are unreasonable and nothing improves. A lot of turnover in the staff due to poor management. The current Director does not answer her phone, return emails and her voicemail is always full. Director is never visible and will hide when you ask to talk to her. Staff is not trained. In constant safety protocol every time you or vendors enter the facility. The facility is infested with roaches. The roof leaks each time it rains and they are to cheap to fix it. The carpets haven't been cleaned in years. They just slap a coat of paint on the walls and hope you don't notice the rest of the problems. The elevators are ancient and breakdown all the time. Very unsafe. One evening my mom's toilet and shower were backing up. Plumber was called and he had to remove the toilet to unclog the system. After the plumber completed the job and left I couldn't find anyone or any supplies to mop the floors. The staff on duty were fine leaving the floor unsanitary. I complained to the temp director and he just gave me lip service. The medical staff is not equipped with the basic tools and supplies. They will tell you what you want to hear but when you confront them on pricing and other issues, they will tell you they cannot take your loved one in as a resident! I disclosed everything to them, I was up front and then they act like they were completely shocked that I didn't tell them about my loved ones medical conditions. This has taken me awhile to write this mainly because of how upset I have been and just could not find the words to describe my horrible experience with this community. I have been in several communities but my Grandma insisted on this one. She lived there a few years before she past, and the care was terrible. Her Apartment smelled like urine everyday. There was mold on the walls in the bathroom and shower toilet area. They claim to clean once a week but that was very doubtful I had to come several times a week just to clean, and make sure she was safe. Residence urinated on the outside furniture and nobody cleaned it up!! This place should be closed down no one should have to endure this place. When she past they never called or offered condolences. I would not recommend this place! read more

Temper your expectations of Brookdale's ability to to care about your parents (referred to as "Mom" and "Dad" by the often-changing management). Clearly, there are kind and caring staff who work there. Our caution applies to Brookdale, as a whole. Especially, its management. Based on my mother's experience there as a six-year resident and our friends' and family's observations, the care and quality steadily declined while the fees noticeably increased each year. The food taste/quality especially became increasingly disappointing. A DoorDash or other similar app to order food from outside the facility for your loved one is highly recommended. During my mother's last days there, she reported not being checked on for four consecutive days while she was not feeling well as a result of contracting RSV there. She would eventually call the paramedics herself to be taken to the hospital where she would pass away a week later. Our expectations hit a disturbing low when, even after their being aware of my mother being taken to the hospital by ambulance, no one from the facility even called to check on her (a resident of six years). The facility provides its residents a place to stay and feeds them. But if you are expecting a facility equipped with sufficient staffing to genuinely care for your loved one (i.e., being regularly checked on or medical personnel to promptly attend to them if they call for medical assistance) and decent meals, you may want to adjust your expectations accordingly. read more

A few major concerns. 1. Beware of annual rent increases. They will tell you one thing before you sign the contract. If you can, get the average expected rent increase in writing. I was told 2.5 - 4%, then they raised it 6.5 to 12% - if they reduce it for you, they will make you pay it back the following year, calling it a retention discount. 2. Safety concerns. Their alarm system is old & generally doesn't work or no one is there to respond. Also, the staff is generally inexperienced and don't seem equipped to handle life threatening emergencies. 3. As for any facility, check complaints first before considering placing your loved one- sometimes it better to pay more for a place with minor complaints than less for one with a lot of complaints. read more

Overall my mom has been here a year. She is doing better now. At first it's hard to get use to. When I come to visit, I request a lot of things for her. Replace a light bulb, fix a tile, etc. this is where they are lacking. Once someone other than a resident requests something, it gets addressed right away. I like the people and the staff is Latino which is perfect for my Colombian mom. We are a mixed family so the all white clientele doesn't phase us. My mom is sensitive to that, but having a very friendly Latino staff helps. They clean the rooms very well and laundry service is done quickly once a week. I like them for my mom. read more

My mother is 93 and I am searching for a qualified facility to care for her. Based on the review I read, this BROOKDALE facility isn't even qualified to run an ANIMAL SHELTER! In my recent investigations into Assisted Living Care Facilities, I am seeing a common problem among most of them which is lack of "Certified Caregiver Training" and proper staffing at all hours. The owners/corporations of these facilities know well that there is little to no governmental/county personnel oversight of these facilities to physically walk through and grade each one and to potentially and heavily penalize financially facilities with fines and or imprisonment to the owners/corporation executives for the lack of care that is commonplace in this industry. read more

If there was a "0" I would rate this place as that. Horrible accommodations, inexperienced staff, no return calls when checking status of loved ones. They've been quarantined and my mother was unable to receive her needed therapy and they lied straight to my face while I inquired about her care. Theft is a huge issue and when you try to contact "Tom" the person in charge your calls are unanswered. I would run the other way if you are considering this horrible place for your elderly loved ones! I quit my job and am now caring for my mom myself since she was miserable living there!! read more

I wanted to like this place, but it has become clear that profit is their only concern. They are understaffed, it takes forever to get help. My mother-in-law was lying on the floor for half an hour before anyone came. But worst of all, they have been charging us an additional $1200/month for care that she is not even receiving! She has been in the hospital for the last few months, so we knew we were going to be paying the basic rent here, but now we find out they have also been charging the additional $1200 and say it is their right to charge it, it's in the agreement we signed. How these people can live with themselves, ripping off seniors and their families, is beyond me. Stay away from ALL Brookdale facilities. My aunt has lived at Brookdale in Chatsworth for almost two years. For the price, the apartment was very spacious and the building has a beautiful library, movie theater and a pool room. I disagree with the other reviewers because we have only had good experiences with the management and staff, who are very friendly with the residents. That being said, my aunt is a very spry 88 year old who does not depend entirely on care staff. She has made lots of good friends, participates in the many activities and exercise classes. She really enjoys living there so I wanted to give my opinion, as our family's experience is so different than some of the other reviews I am reading on yelp. My mother lived there for 5 years. I would visit once a month, traveling from N Calif. At first I thought this place was just fine. Over the years I have noticed things missing from her room, things I have given her. She never told me she was getting things stolen from her. It wasn't until she died that we finally found out. She was putting notes on things asking staff to please don't steal this or that. Staff constantly steal from the clients living there. I did notice they would come in her room when she went to the dinning room. That was when they would steal , many many things were stolen , even mail that I sent her. Workers are low paid and theifs . Find anywhere else to put your parents. They rarely check on the clients, when they do , it is usually when they are not there so they can steal what they want. If you do put your parents there, give them unbreakable lockers that they can not open and steal from them. The sanitary situation is pretty bad also. Things are not what they appear to be there!!!! read more

There are many things wrong with this establishment primary being the amount of time which elapses between the time a resident signals for help and the time that help arrives. When the help arrives, frequently that caregiver cannot perform the necessary care which that resident requires. Management in general is not responsive to residents complaints. While lip service is given rarely is it followed by actual service as required. Real training of caregivers is not sufficient. They are often given responsibilities after employment only a short time. We have seen caregivers having only a few weeks employment training even newer employees There is no apparent contingency plan to account for personnel absence. Consequently those present must also perform the duties of those who are absent resulting in overworked and overtired staff. This applies to other departments as well. The dining room staff has the same problem. The fiction of nutritious and varied meals could possibly be accurate if there wasn't a frequent shortage the better parts of the menu. The usual excuse is that the people dining in the earlier seating ordered too much of a given item. From the frequency of that occurrence it appears that insufficient planning is taking place. If a housekeeper is absent the room will remain uncleaned. read more
