I celebrated my birthday at the Sunday Gospel Brunch. It was such an amazing time! From the music to the food to the little birthday surprises. The whole experience felt special. One MINOR complaint in #3. Here's how it all came together: 1. Atmosphere The vibe was lively and welcoming. There was a stage set up for performances and had more room than I expected. I remembered when the space used to be a bar and felt narrow, so seeing it now with a wide front and back was a pleasant surprise. The gospel music really set the tone. It was refreshing to hear uplifting songs instead of the typical party playlist you usually find at brunch spots. It made the whole experience feel unique and positive. 2. Cleanliness The restaurant felt clean and comfortable, which added to the overall enjoyment. The open setup made everything feel bright and inviting, and the stage was ready for a VIP section or for performances. 3. Food I ordered the fish and grits. The portion was smaller than I'm used to. It was just one split catfish filet instead of two like I'm used to. The flavor was there. The fish was fried hard, just as I requested, and the cream sauce over the grits was delicious. I'm not going to hold you! I was a little disappointed not having enough to take leftovers home for my late rising husband. That's usually the exchange for me hanging out without him! Lol! But, what I had was definitely delicious. They had a lemon drop martini special. The lemon drop was a little bitter compared to what I'm used to, making the sugar rim necessary to balance it out 4. Service The staff were so kind and attentive throughout. My waitress even took several photos of us to capture the moment, which was thoughtful. Pricing For a specialty brunch experience with gospel music and a fun vibe, the pricing felt fair. I alert that I have a food allergy and the server tells me it's fine. So I sit and wait and I don't find out that the server was wrong until they bring out everyone else's food so that was lame. So I change my order and ask for some chicken tenders and look at the "two" chicken tenders I ordered. What a joke. And then the bill comes--one & a half chicken tenders + 1 plain lemonade came out to almost $15 because of "tax and automatic gratuity" which just doesn't make any sense. They doubled the bill. On top of that, they brought out the food at random times so two people are eating while the other two don't have food yet. It was just terrible all around. I live in the area and try to frequent local restaurants. We were early (they opened at 11) and it was a beautiful day, so we sat outside to wait. As staff were arriving, we were greeted and informed that they will be opening soon. Everyone spoke and was pleasant. One man even took time to provide us with a menu. Once we were seated inside we sat in the restaurant area. It was a Sunday, and they have gospel brunch. The atmosphere was wonderful! The service was excellent and the food was delicious! We highly recommend having the Hennessy Lemon Drop! We were also greeted by the owner while there. Very pleasant and welcoming. If you are near stop by! Picked up brunch. Didn't like the fact that I couldn't order without paying beforehand, but it's ok, I understand that's how some businesses run. So I get there to order food because I only had cash. Service was friendly and the establishment looked cute. We ordered the lamb chops and catfish and grits. My lamb chops were good, cooked to perfection. Husband said his catfish was very good but the grits were just ok. They needed some more seasoning. Overall, we will give this place another try read more

After two visits to Bronzeville, I will be writing it off as a restaurant to visit and I strongly suggest you all do the same. Slow service, unapproachable waiting staff, and inconsistencies with food were below par. However, the worst part was after the dining experience. After their payment system failed, they were calling the members of our party to come back and pay our bill again. By the goodness of our hearts, we returned back to pay our bill and share our grievances with this unusual request. The owner never apologized for this mishap and was accusing us for being disrespectful when we were responding negatively to his demeanor. He said because of his payment system failing, that's not his problem. The owner's ego was unfortunately showing as he then said he doesn't care about the money, even though his business was asking people to come back and pay their bill. He wasn't listening and said he wasn't a "sorry type of guy". And then he threatened us with physical violence because he was mad about our response to his behavior and lack of ownership. He told his wife that he's about to "slap a b****." Never in any dining experience ever in my life have I seen anything like this. Today was my second visit. I had fried to perfection jumbo shrimp, homemade slim jim fries, fried pickles all seasoned just right for every taste bud. The food was GREAT! Someone in Milwaukee finally learned how to make fried green tomatoes and they served it to us before their menu serving time. The chicken wings were fantastic. My experience here has been horrible on multiple occasions. The owner is rude, disrespectful and does not have good communication skills in dealing with customers or in running a business. He is not knowledgeable of drinks and often blames the staff for his personal mistakes. I suspect the majority of the bartenders do not have licenses since anyone who works there is allowed to come behind the bar and make drinks, something I have witnessed on multiple occasions there. The owner makes people pay for to go containers. I will never patronize this place again after my last visit. I ordered the French toast for Brunch and was sick that entire Sunday and following Monday. A close friend of mine who visited there was verbally assaulted, called out of her name as threatened by the owner himself. This is not my first time as a customer, but after my most recent experience, I'll never be back. I will never recommend this establishment to anyone who is a resident or visitor of the metro area. There were some service issues here and there, but we try our best to give grace. My sister received a phone call a few hours after we left for brunch. First and foremost, this is unacceptable. Since she knew one of the servers personally, they happened to have her number asking to identify members of our party because they had a "WiFi glitch" and some payments were allegedly not processed. She reached out to some other members of our party, including myself, forewarning us that the restaurant would reach out regarding the glitch and their need for another payment. This situation annoyed a lot of us but of course, we try our best to extend grace. I articulated my discontent with an associate over the phone as I returned her call after she left me a voicemail. She then said I could give my card information over the phone, and I told her that this was all quite ghetto and inappropriate, that this was on the business (not hers), and that I would be asking to speak with the manager and/or owner upon arrival to express our discontent. Upon arrival, I maintained a stern tone and articulated my discontent to the owner regarding such an outlandish request. Part of the conversation with the owner was mentioning to him that my sister, who they called, is an attorney, stated that it is not illegal if no one goes back to provide an additional payment to a restaurant due to a failure on their end once a customer has closed out and left the premises. In addition to that, I mentioned that most wouldn't come back because they do not have to but part of why we did come back was due to my integrity as a leader and public official in our community. After a conversation that, admittedly, gradually escalated because myself and my partner believed a simple apology was warranted. At one point, the owner said, "I'm not no sorry, muthaf*cka," and repeatedly said he didn't owe us anything or an apology. The food was horrible, and so was the manager. I ordered food I didn't like, and they wouldn't even take it off my bill, allowing me to order something else. Instead, the manager didn't once state the policy about ordering food if you don't like it; she just let me order something different/never took my plate, and charged me and my family $115. Came here after looking for a spot to have breakfast at. Settled on Bronzeville and was so happy we did we were set in the front of the restaurant. We started off with peach henny drinks that were delicious. We both decided on the shrimp and grits. I added catfish to mine and my dining partner added lamb chops. 10/10 the shrimp and grits with the Texas toast was divine. I also got a side of French toast and it was good.
