You know that I'm usually a proponent of big-box chain stores because I think they're hooked into a…read morebetter supply chain and can get things faster and (usually) cheaper. But I've been burned badly of late at Best Buy, and Dyckman Electronics Center has me reconsidering my position. It's a solid #MerlinFIIIIVEEEEEE (elongate the vowels, elevate the pitch) and then some. My jam: I needed to replace a dishwasher and oven right away. (Don't ask: sometimes, somebody just needs a dishwasher and an oven, you know?) Called this place up and got reasonable quotes right away. The stuff was at my place in a couple hours. A lot of indie shops price gouge shamelessly. This place is the opposite. I'd definitely recommend talking to Angela if you're in a jam similar to mine. She'll take care of you and help you out if things go South (which they did for me -- I initially got a 30 inch oven by mistake for a 24 inch slot, and she told me to relax and fixed it!)

Just under a year later, I brought the headphones in because they had cable problems and the audio cut out frequently in the right ear. They were great about honoring their store warranty, and I walked out with a new pair in short order. I did not expect it to be so easy. I am very happy with the service at Dyckman Electronics. Note: The warranty requires the receipt and the original packaging.

It was hard to use this way and I worried about it getting even worse. These guys were able to completely restore it! It works like brand new now. The price was great and they got the job done fast. Fantastic experience! If I ever have any other vintage electronics in need of repair, I will bring it to them for sure.

I brought in my 5 year old Sonos subwoofer that suddenly stopped powering on. Earlier that day I…read morehad called Hi-Tech Electric Service Center, explained the issue, and was told "sure, no problem, bring it in." I even mentioned what I thought the problem was and that I preferred a professional to handle it. After leaving work early and lugging a 35 lb sub about an 8 minute walk to the shop, the person I spoke with asked what was wrong, then basically told me I should just do it myself. He then said he was uncomfortable having his team take it apart and declined the job. This is exactly the kind of thing that should have been communicated over the phone so I didn't waste the time and effort bringing it in. On the positive side, he seemed honest and didn't try to pretend they had skills or comfort level they didn't. He also recommended another shop in Chinatown that "will fix anything," although I checked their reviews and decided not to go that route. In the end I repaired the sub myself successfully. Overall, I appreciate the honesty, but I was frustrated by the lack of clear communication up front that led to an unnecessary trip with a heavy piece of equipment.
